Lauren Bayne claimed the spotlight as her own.

With three of its fastest runners (Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt and Kirsten Pelroy) not competing Thursday in Sequim, the Coupeville High School girls’ track squad turned to its youngsters for its highlights.

Bayne, a speedy freshman, set PRs in all three of her events, while claiming the only victory of the day for the Wolves in the 3200.

She won that event by nearly 16 seconds.

Abby Parker tied Bayne with three PRs, while Delaney Armstrong, Connor Thompson, Mitchell Losey and Jesse Hester all had two apiece.

The meet drew seven schools, with the host school taking top honors in both team races.

Coupeville finished fifth on the girls side and sixth on the boys.

Small numbers, but some big results.

Capping off spring break, the Coupeville High School track squad sent a limited number of athletes to the 44th annual Cashmere Invitational Saturday, but seven Wolves came home with PR’s.

Abby Parker (1500), Mitchell Losey (javelin),  Jesse Hester (110 hurdles), Alexxis Otto (shot put), Allison Wenzel (javelin), Luke Carlson (discus) and Lathom Kelley (200, 300 hurdles) all set individual bests in their events.

Kelley claimed the highest finish of the day, winning the 300 hurdles in a field of 21 athletes in his first-ever try at the event.

18 teams competed, ranging in size from 2A to 2B, with King’s taking the boys title and Meridian copping the honors on the girls side of the competition.

Carlie

Mattea Miller

Mattea Miller (foreground), here running with Erin Rosenkranz, finished second in the 800, setting a PR.

The big guns were missing, so everyone else made up for it.

Competing without Makana Stone (sore knee) and Nick Streubel (illness), the Coupeville High School track squad still managed to collect 31 season best marks Thursday at a four-team meet in Duvall.

“Our athletes are making progress!,” said CHS coach Randy King. “Great to see practice effort and skill development leading to improved marks.”

Competing against South Whidbey, Granite Falls and host Cedarcrest, the Wolves nabbed a pair of wins, one slightly more impressive than the other.

The Wolf boys’ 4 x 100 relay squad came home with a first, but since they were the only foursome running in the event, anything less would have been a disappointment.

The bigger victory came in the girls’ 800, where Carlie Rosenkrance edged out fellow Wolf freshman Mattea Miller to nab the title. The pair were more than five seconds faster than any of the big school runners who joined them in the event.
