Wolfe nets another milestone

In this most unusual of basketball seasons, another quirk.

With one game left to play in a pandemic-shortened season, Hawthorne Wolfe is about to do something no Coupeville High School basketball player, boy or girl, has ever accomplished.

With 240 points in 11 games — 21.8 a night — the CHS junior will lead the boys team in scoring, no matter what happens in Tuesday’s finale against Darrington.

In finishing as the #1 point producer, Wolfe becomes the 15th boy, and 27th player overall in school history, to have topped a year-end varsity scoring chart at least two times during their career.

But, he is the first to ever do it in non-consecutive seasons.

Wolfe paced Coupeville in scoring as a freshman, tossing in 158 points while Sean Toomey-Stout was second-best with 122.

Last season, Hawk came within a bucket of repeating as scoring champ, but was edged out 254-252 by senior Mason Grove.

Now, Wolfe is back on top, with Xavier Murdy angling for runner-up status with 115 points heading into the finale.

Of the 15 CHS boys to top the charts at least twice, only one, Barry Brown, led his squad in scoring three times — something Hawk can chase next year as a senior.

On the girls side of things, six Wolves have pulled off a three-peat, with Megan Smith being the only four-timer.

Make the net sing a sweet song

“Go and score, my queen.”

They keep the scorebook keepers busy.

The players on Coupeville High School’s four basketball teams have combined to tally 1,210 points this season — as best as I can tell.

The front-runner, by a lot, is net-tickler Hawthorne Wolfe.

With 215 points across nine games, the junior guard is averaging 23.9 a night, and has accounted for almost 18% of all Coupeville points by himself.

Fellow Class of 2022 gunner Xavier Murdy became the second player to crack the 100-point barrier this season, while JV players Desi Ramirez and Reese Wilkinson are the latest to join the scoring parade.

Flip the net, fill the scorebook

Coupeville High School’s four basketball teams have combined to score exactly that much as we sit at the halfway point of the compressed 2021 hoops season.

That’s come from the efforts of 19 Wolf boys and 15 girls, with four players — Lyla Stuurmans, Logan Downes, Jonathan Valenzuela, and Cole White — having tallied points as both JV and varsity players.

Topping our charts are two juniors, a sophomore, and an 8th grader, and three of the four scoring races are still pretty close.

In the other one, Hawthorne Wolfe is feeling it, averaging 24.7 points a night, with two games of 30+ points across six hardcourt rumbles.

Milestone city, baby

Milestones make stat geeks giddy.

Tuesday night, as the Coupeville High School boys basketball team battered visiting Concrete 71-17, there were two such moments in time.

One — Hawthorne Wolfe cracking the 500-point career scoring club — was noted in my game story last night.

Today we note the other.

When Wolf freshman Cole White scored his first varsity points, he joined an exclusive club.

With 5:13 left in the game, Jonathan Valenzuela, trapped under the basket, looped a pass to his fellow swing player, who was lurking on the left side.

White caught the ball, popped a short jumper, and the net flipped upwards as history tumbled through it.

With the bucket, Cole joined dad Greg, watching the game from the bench as a CHS assistant coach, on the school’s career scoring chart.

The elder White rippled the nets for 604 points back when he was wearing short-shorts, and still sits #31 all-time.

But the basket had another historical note to it, as Cole White became the 400th Wolf boy I’ve been able to document scoring at least one point in a varsity hoops game.

From Jeff Stone and Mike Bagby, tied with 1,137 points, to Paul Baher, Robert Engle, Bob Franzen, Meryl Gordon, Oscar Liquidano, and Raleigh Sherman — who all netted a single varsity free throw — it’s a long and diverse list.

Boys basketball has been active at CHS since 1917, and my pursuit of what is now 104 years of scoring history is not a complete one.

I’m missing points for a fair amount of players from the 1930’s and 1940’s, but I do have totals for two seasons in the 1920’s(!), so we’re getting there.

If a bunch of old-timey scorebooks suddenly appeared in the blink of a time machine, we obviously would go above 400 Wolf boys having scored.

Floyd Wanamaker, Dean Edmundson, and the rest of the 1925-1926 Wolves, you will be honored, one day!

OK, probably not, but we can still hope.

But we’re pretty dang solid from the early ’50s to today, with scattered records from before, so if the 400 isn’t 100% correct, it’s getting closer and closer.

For the moment, though, don’t worry about what could be. Instead, celebrate what is known.

Valenzuela, who also scored his first varsity points Tuesday, became #399 in the third quarter, then set up White to be #400.

Jonathan Valenzuela has torched the nets for the JV boys.

It’s the easy stat, it’s the sexy stat.

Rebounds, steals, the number of times you draw an offensive charge — all important to basketball success.

But putting the ball in the bucket is ultimately what the game revolves around.

Plus, it’s the stat I can track the best as four separate Coupeville High School hoops squads play out their season.
