Wolf booters take first steps!!

Right into the fire.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team has no pushovers on its early-season schedule, and a Wolf team in transition will get a chance to learn quickly against tough competition.

First up was Meridian, which came within a game of making it to the state tourney last season.

The Trojans are already gelling this time around, as they rolled to a season-opening 4-0 win over Coupeville Tuesday in Bellingham.

After absorbing the shutout loss, the Wolves head back to Whidbey, where they’ll play three straight.

The home stand starts Thursday, with Friday Harbor, a 2B state quarter-finalist last year, arriving in Cow Town for a 4:30 match-up.

Then comes defending 1A state champs King’s Sept. 11 and always-tough Sultan Sept. 13, as CHS plays its first-ever games in the new North Sound Conference.

Second-year Coupeville girls coach Kyle Nelson, who led his team to a program-record eight wins last year, came away from the opening day loss with eyes set firmly on the long view.

“We lost, but it gave us a look against a good team and areas we will be looking to improve,” he said. “With many new players, and players in new positions, it was a first chance to start figuring out our system and changes that will need to be made.”

Too early to gloat? Never!!

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Which should be for about a hot second.

Two days into a new athletic year, King’s High School, which boasts 50+ state titles in its storied history, sits in dead-last place in both sports in which North Sound Conference teams have started playing.

And yes, we’re talking one whole game in both football and girls soccer, and yes, we’re talking a non-conference game at that, and yes, I’m being kinda snarky and petty.

Welcome back to getting needled on a regular basis, you private school princes and princesses, you.

Anyways, at the moment, both Coupeville and South Whidbey, public schools competing with only athletes who live inside their boundaries, are a flawless 1-0 for the 2018-2019 school year and King’s is 0-2.

Quick, someone get their daddy to go donate some dollars to the athlete recruiting budget, stat!

Heh heh…

With volleyball and tennis getting rolling this coming week, the only sports which have played games that count in the win/loss columns are football and soccer.

King’s, the defending 1A state champs on the pitch, were nipped 1-0 by 3A Lakeside, a team which fell in the state quarterfinals a season ago.

In the world of the gridiron, Coupeville whacked Port Townsend 28-18, South Whidbey slipped past Friday Harbor 20-19, Sultan thrashed Vashon Island 55-0, Cedar Park Christian waxed Chimacum 47-7, Granite Falls was squashed 42-0 by Shorewood and King’s fell flat in a 31-13 loss to Lakewood.

Jamboree season is upon us.

As high school teams head towards the start of regular-season play, many of them are getting in some work in live action scenarios.

Coupeville High School football went first last weekend, volleyball heads to Oak Harbor Saturday, but Thursday was all about the booters.

The Wolf girls soccer squad and coach Kyle Nelson traveled up Island to Memorial Stadium, where they faced off with league rival South Whidbey and host Oak Harbor.

Popping in from his home in the big city, wanderin’ photo god John Fisken was on scene and captured the images seen above.

Paging all soccer coaches!!

Do it, for the kids.

Have a lot of soccer knowledge? Or just the basics, but you want to help shape the destiny of Central Whidbey’s young booters anyway?

Old pro or first timer, the Central Whidbey Soccer Club is in desperate need of coaches.

“If we don’t get coaches for our U-8 coed, U-10 boys, U-12 boys, and U-12 girls teams, there are going to be a lot of very disappointed young soccer players,” said Michelle Cernick.

The soccer club, which has been a vibrant part of Coupeville’s sports scene, almost shut down this year because of a lack of volunteers. But a small, but determined group of parents rallied to revive it.

Now the players are in place, and the first games kick off Saturday, Sept. 8.

But, with just two coaches currently in place, things are once again dicey.
