“I’m super excited to start!!”

A new season starts in a little over 48 hours.

Coupeville High School athletes will head outside (hopefully not into the rain) Monday to kick off the first day of practice for spring sports.

The new season is the busiest of the three for CHS, with softball, baseball, track, golf, boys soccer and girls tennis vying.

The five Wolf squads (lone Wolf golfer Christine Fields trains and travels with South Whidbey) will be making their debut in the 1A Olympic League.

With fall and winter done, Coupeville has been the second-most successful school in the new league, capturing 23 league wins and a title in girls basketball.

Klahowya, the biggest school (by far) in the new four-team conference, has 30 league wins spread across the six sports (football, volleyball, boys tennis, girls soccer, girls and boys basketball) played so far.

Port Townsend has 15, while Chimacum brings up the rear with 13.

As they head into a new league, the Wolves hope to replicate their success from last spring.

Coupeville sent its baseball and softball teams to state, while Fields, track star Makana Stone and netters Aaron Curtin and Ben Etzell also made the trip to the Big Dance.

It was the first trip to state for a CHS softball squad in 12 years and one of the players who witnessed that never-say-die run up close and personal was Tiffany Briscoe.

As a freshman, she started several games in the outfield for the Wolves and became a more dangerous hitter in the latter stages of the season.

Now, as a sophomore, she will be in a new league, with a new coach, as Deanna Rafferty has replaced David and Amy King, who had to step aside to focus more time on their jobs.

Like her teammates, and fellow athletes in other sports, Briscoe is on the edge of her seat as the hours tick down.

Her thoughts:

“So, I’m super excited for softball to start!

Although all the nerves are starting to kick in with a new coach and all. But so far I’ve heard nothing but great things about her!

This will hopefully be another great season for Coupeville softball.

I’m ready to be back with the team and continue to keep improving our game!”

Nothing is set in stone.

With that said, here’s a peek at what we, kinda, sorta, think might (possibly) be the spring sports schedules for Coupeville High School and its five athletic teams (plus lone Wolf golfer Christine Fields, who practices and travels with South Whidbey.)

And yes, the first day of practice (Monday, March 2) is just five days away, with games set to start about two weeks later, but don’t expect the schedules to be 100% all there.

What we’re currently seeing is 17 games for softball and 19 for baseball, and both squads can go 20 games, so it’s possible deals are still being worked out.

And boys’ soccer? There’s currently a four-week stretch between Mar. 25 and Apr. 23 where the Wolves have exactly ONE GAME scheduled.

As always in recent years, what might seem a misprint is not — CHS track will spend its entire season on the road, as the school’s track oval awaits an upgrade.

So, keeping all of that in mind (and also realizing that spring, with potential rain, is the trickiest of all seasons in which to keep a schedule intact), here’s what we know as of this morning:

Four of the six Coupeville girls who went to the state track meet last year can return in 2014.

Saint Patricks’s Day is opening day.

Coupeville High School kicks off its spring sports season — its last as a member of the 1A/2A Cascade Conference — with baseball and softball games and a girls’ tennis match Monday, Mar. 17.

Boys’ soccer and track join the battle a day or two later, and the season runs into early May, when the postseason will start to play out.

Below are the schedules, as they sit today.

Baseball and softball schedules are still being tweaked, and a 20th game will be added to both schedules shortly.

Also, as we go forward, expect weather to play havoc with things (the sun will come out just as the season winds down…), so keep an eye on the schedule at http://coupeville.tandemcal.com/.

Things to keep in mind:

*If boys’ soccer has enough players for a JV squad, they will play the same dates and locations as the varsity, with their games kicking off two hours earlier.

*There is a chance baseball will field a JV team this season. If they do, that schedule will be announced later.

*There is no JV for softball or track and tennis matches are one big mash-up. Varsity netters go first, but JV players then hit the courts as they open up, meaning often varsity and JV are playing at the same time.

*There are no home meets for track this season.

*Coupeville has one golfer — junior Christine Fields, a two-time state meet qualifier (she placed 8th as a freshman, 15th as a sophomore). She practices and travels with South Whidbey, since CHS does not have a team, but competes as a one-woman Wolf squad.

Of the eight teams in the Cascade Conference, three (South Whidbey, King’s and Coupeville) are 1A, but King’s does not field baseball, softball or girls’ tennis teams.

*Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, is jumping to an all-1A division of the Olympic League next school year, where its counterparts will be Port Townsend, Chimacum and Klahowya. Softball and girls’ tennis both play Port Townsend this spring, giving them an early look at their future rivals.
