Shoot the rock, check the standings

“So do we.”

One week in, three to play.

High school hoops are officially underway in the Northwest 2B/1B League, and a couple of things are already clear.

On the girls side, La Conner is, as always, a beast.

The 2B Braves have polished off Concrete 88-10, Friday Harbor 62-15, and Darrington 87-6, while also stepping outside the NWL to beat 1A power King’s 44-39.

There’s also a second beast, with 1B Mount Vernon Christian having beaten Coupeville 54-14, Concrete 75-17, and Orcas Island 62-16.

La Conner and MVC play June 1 and 15, and barring any kind of Covid-related shenanigans, it would appear the Braves and Hurricanes will slug it out for the title.

On the boys side, things are much more topsy-turvy.

Orcas Island sits atop the standings at 3-1, but lost Saturday to Mount Vernon Christian, a team Coupeville already whacked.

For the Wolves, if their buzzer-beater Saturday at Friday Harbor had stayed in the bucket, they’d be 2-1 and in a second-place tie.

It didn’t, so, for the moment, CHS is a game-and-a-half back of the top spot, though things could radically change in week two.

The Wolves, both boys and girls, play three times this coming week, with home games against Concrete Tuesday and La Conner Thursday, followed by a trip Friday to the wilds of Darrington.

That’ll take us to the halfway point of this pandemic-altered 12-game season, and may provide a bit more clarity on which boys team will rise to the top.

Maybe.

Fall teams fight for supremacy

It’s a war so far.

With fall sports up and going — at least where Covid is not making teams sit right back down — the race for the most team varsity wins is a close one.

While Coupeville thoroughly dominated the spring sports which kept win/loss records, fall is a three-way battle.

The Wolves, who have at least one league victory in four sports — boys and girls soccer, football, and volleyball — are tied with La Conner with six wins total, while Mount Vernon Christian has five.

Orcas Island offers up three wins, all in boys soccer, while Concrete has one, and Darrington remains winless thus far.

Friday Harbor is actually winless as well, but, with all its fall programs shut down by a rise in positive Covid cases on San Juan Island, they’re not really a factor.

The week ahead offers a mix of games for Coupeville, with one constant — they’re all on the road.

Girls soccer is the only Wolf program set to play more than once, with a road game Friday at La Conner, followed by a 3 vs 3 mini-tourney Saturday at Mount Vernon Christian.

Meanwhile, boys soccer travels to Grace Academy Wednesday, volleyball and cross country will be on Orcas Friday, and football meets Lummi Nation Saturday night.

That last one is a non-conference clash, rare this time around as almost all Age of Coronavirus games are being played against league foes.

Bide your time, watch the standings

There were basketball games this week, just none involving Coupeville.

The Wolves are on Day 8 of a 12-day break between contests, not returning to action until Friday, January 3, when they travel to Chimacum.

But other North Sound Conference teams did lace up the shoes and head to the hardwood, so we’re back to provide a look at where everyone’s win/loss record sits.

Have to fill the time somehow, so here’s where things sit:

I’ll be there for you (with standings)

And now, some rest.

Having reached the sort-of halfway point of the season, give or take a game or three here and there, the North Sound Conference basketball teams are headed out for winter break.

Coupeville has 12 days off, with neither its girls or boys teams returning to action until Jan. 3.

Not all teams are taking the break off, but those who aren’t will be playing exclusively non-conference foes.

The King’s boys will play in a tourney in Arizona, both Granite Falls squads are set for Crush in the Slush in Port Townsend, and there are a handful of other games spread out around Christmas and New Year’s Day festivities.

Then, January rolls around and things get serious, as everyone starts to hunt league titles and playoff positioning.

For now, there have been just two league games played on either side of the ball, with the Coupeville girls one of those tied atop the current conference standings.

As we head into the break, where things sit:

Tell me where we stand

The race is starting to take shape.

Not a single North Sound Conference basketball team has played a league contest yet, but that’s about to change. At least a little bit.

Four of the six girls squads square off for the first time Tuesday, with Coupeville traveling to Sultan, and South Whidbey visiting Bothell to play Cedar Park Christian.

Meanwhile, on the boys side of the floor, Sultan and Granite Falls vie Tuesday, with King’s and CPC clashing Wednesday.

That’s just the tip of what will be a very busy week, as tons o’ non-conference action fills the schedule.

All total, there are 15 boys games and 11 girls contests involving NSC teams between Monday and Saturday of this week.

For Coupeville, both of its teams have three games to play, with two foes being the same.

The Wolf girls face Sultan, then travel to Port Townsend Thursday and host Nooksack Valley Saturday.

For the CHS boys, it’s three straight home games, with Chimacum, Port Townsend, and Nooksack on the books Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, respectively.
