It’s the final push.

Coupeville High School fall sports teams wrap the regular season this coming week, setting the stage for possible playoff action.

Well, except for cross country, which is already in the thick of the postseason.

Having run at the Northwest 2B/1B League meet, the Wolves head to tri-districts Thursday at Fort Steilacoom Park, with an eye on advancing to the state meet.

For the other CHS squads, it’s finale time.

Football hosts Friday Harbor Thursday. Win and they square off with the same school again — likely Saturday in Anacortes — in a two-quarter tiebreaker to determine which NWL team advances to state.

Soccer bounces island to island, landing on Orcas Tuesday.

The Wolf booters will need a win, and some side luck, to net a playoff berth outright or a chance to play a tiebreaker for a postseason ticket.

No matter how the varsity fares, JV soccer has picked up an extra game, and will host Friday Harbor Saturday.

Finally, we have volleyball, which hosts La Conner Tuesday and travels to Friday Harbor Thursday.

Barring an epic upset loss to the latter of those two teams, which is 1-12, Coupeville advances to districts and will begin their quest for state on the road.

With a split league, 1B and 2B schools have different criteria for making the playoffs, but below are the overall standings through games of Oct. 21:

It’s a perfect split.

Coupeville High School fall sports teams have six contests next week, with three at home, and three on the road.

Wolf volleyball has the sweetest schedule, hosting Friday Harbor Tuesday and Forks Saturday, while CHS soccer gets a split decision.

The high-flying booters, who boast the best record of any Coupeville team at 4-1, hit the road Tuesday for a major matchup with Mount Vernon Christian.

Then the Wolves bring it home under Friday Night Lights, playing host to Grace Academy.

That leaves football and cross country, who will both listen to the sounds of the bus wheels going round and round this coming week.

The gridiron giants travel to Bellingham Friday, while the harriers run Saturday at the Hole in the Wall Invitational in Arlington.

Other than the weather, CHS fans have had plenty to be happy about this spring.

Is the price of gas going to drop?

That’s the question on the mind of Coupeville High School Athletic Director Willie Smith, as Wolf spring sports teams hit the road for five of seven contests next week.

Girls’ tennis has the week off — from competition, if not practice — but baseball, softball, and track and field all will listen to the sound of the wheels on the bus goin’ round ‘n round.

Baseball and softball travel to Concrete Tuesday and Darrington Thursday, before closing out the week at home Saturday against La Conner.

That weekend doubleheader is Senior Night for the Wolf diamond players, with both games set to start at 1:00 PM.

Meanwhile, the CHS track team, or part of it at least, travels to Lakewood Saturday for the Sunny and 70 Invitational, the final meet before the postseason kicks off.

Based on “spring” weather so far, it’ll be cloudy, windy, wet and 45 degrees, no matter what the event is called.

As we head into a new week, a look at current standings for teams which keep track of wins and losses:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 10-1 10-3
Coupeville 9-1 11-4
Friday Harbor 6-3 6-5
Orcas Island 5-6 8-6
Darrington 4-6 5-6
La Conner 1-9 2-11
Concrete 0-9 0-9

The lightest week of the season looms.

With spring break arriving for Coupeville schools, the Wolves have an extremely limited schedule over the next seven days.

Girls tennis is completely off, while track and field competes just once, traveling to Bellingham Saturday, Apr. 8 for the Birger Solberg Invitational.

CHS baseball doesn’t return to the field until the same day, when it will be in Concrete for a road game.

Meanwhile, the only Wolf team with multiple events on the schedule is softball, which plays a makeup game Thursday, Apr. 6 at home against Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, then hits the road to Concrete two days later.

Where things stand heading into the slow part of the season:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 5-0 5-2
Coupeville 3-1 5-3
Friday Harbor 1-1 1-3
Darrington 2-3 3-3
Orcas Island 2-3 4-3
Concrete 0-2 0-2
La Conner 0-3 1-5

Northwest League girls tennis:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 1-2
Friday Harbor 0-1 0-1

Northwest League softball:

School League Overall
Darrington 3-0 4-0
Friday Harbor 2-0 5-2
Coupeville 2-1 4-3
Orcas Island 1-3 1-7
Concrete 0-2 0-4
La Conner 0-2 0-7
