New hoops stars rise to claim the throne!!

Connor Barton floats like a butterfly, but he stings like a bee.

Jacobi Pacquette-Pilgrim skies for a rebound.

Ride him, cowboy.

Will he shoot or pass? Koa Davison is a man of mystery.

Raining down fire from above, it’s high-flying Jake Mitten.

Jered Brown slices ‘n dices the defense.

No matter how early in the morning it might be, Caleb Meyer is always enthusiastic about playing defense.

The future is out there, working every weekend.

Coupeville’s SWISH boys’ basketball squads continue to put in work, with both the 7th and 8th grade teams playing Saturday.

The 7th grade team (which is actually a 50-50 split between 6th and 7th graders) finished fourth at a regular season-ending tournament.

The Wolves upended Ferndale 30-28, then lost close battles against Sultan and Oak Harbor, which came to battle with deep rosters chock full of older players.

In the win, Matthew Kelley dropped in 12 points, snatched five rebounds, dealt out two assists and pilfered three steals.

Jake Mitten pounded away for 11 points and five boards, while Daniel Olson (4), Caleb Meyer (2) and Connor Barton (1) also scored.

Daniel Barajas made off with two steals, Hawthorne Wolfe snatched two rebounds and Logan Martin, Alex Jimenez and Dakota Eck all saw playing time.

The 7th grade squad travels to Spokane next weekend, where they’ll close the season with an appearance at the state tourney.

As the two squads were playing Saturday, travelin’ photo man John Fisken wiled away the hours, avoiding the sunlight in service of Wolf parents.

Barajas sparkles in regular season finale!!

Next weekend’s playoff draw.

It wasn’t a perfect way to end the regular season, but it had its moments.

Playing in a game with little impact on league standings or playoff positioning Saturday, the Coupeville 7th grade boys’ SWISH basketball squad coasted into the postseason with a 34-24 loss to Friday Harbor.

Turnovers and missed shots, the deadliest of basketball combos, tripped up the Wolves as they finished the regular season 6-2.

Coupeville will be a #2 seed in the playoffs, which go down in Mount Vernon next Saturday, Mar. 5.

After that comes a trip to Spokane for a middle school state tourney.

While they stumbled a bit in their regular season finale, the Wolves got another strong game from post power Jake Mitten, who banged away for 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Matthew Kelley knocked down six, while Daniel Olson and Daniel Barajas each added a bucket to round out the scoring.

It was the first basket of the season for Barajas, who has led the sixth graders on the squad with 11 assists and 12 rebounds this season.

Kelley filled out the stat sheet with four rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks, while Barajas, Olson, Dakota Eck, Alex Jimenez, Caleb Meyer, Logan Martin and Hawthorne Wolfe snagged a rebound apiece.

Connor Barton pilfered a steal.

On the fast track to success!!

Running away from the pack.

That’s what the Coupeville 7th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad is currently doing, throwing down wins left and right.

The latest came Saturday as the Wolves blitzed Granite Falls 49-39.

The win lifts Coupeville to 6-1 on the season and clinches at least second place in a 15-team league.

Using a platoon system, the Wolves opened the game with its 6th graders on the floor and they ran out to an early 8-4 lead.

Then Coupeville tossed in its 7th graders and the game was soon out of reach.

Jake Mitten paced the Wolves with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Daniel Olson knocked down 13 and Caleb Meyer tickled the twines for eight.

Logan Martin (6), Matthew Kelley (6) and Connor Barton (2) rounded out the scorers.

Kelley (5), Martin (4), Hawthorne Wolfe (4), Daniel Barajas (2) and Dakota Eck (1) helped Mitten out on the boards, while Meyer added three assists and three steals.

The Wolves have one game remaining on their regular season schedule, but have also accepted an invitation to the Washington State Middle School Championships in Spokane Mar. 11-13.

Double headers are a trap.

Well, at least they can be for a young squad.

The Coupeville 7th grade boys’ SWISH hoops team discovered that Saturday, as they rolled to a big win in their opener, then stumbled in their nightcap.

The Wolves opened with a roar, thumping Arlington 31-17, but injuries, illness and tired legs conspired to sap their strength and they fell 33-31 to an overly-aggressive SV Sonics squad.

The split left Coupeville at 5-1 on the season and in sole possession of second place in a 15-team league.

With single games the next two weekends, against foes with losing records who will be playing doubleheaders of their own, the outlook is bright for the Wolves.

Now they just have to hope undefeated Lakewood stumbles in front of them.

Jake Mitten led the Wolf attack Saturday, throwing down 19 points and 10 rebounds in game one and 15 points and 17 boards in the second tilt.

Matthew Kelley, who has a broken finger on his shooting hand, had 11 points on the day, while Daniel Olson (6), Connor Barton (4), Caleb Meyer (3) and Hawthorne Wolfe (2) also scored.

Running wild!!

Can’t touch ’em.

At least not so far, as the 7th grade Coupeville SWISH boys’ basketball squad rolled to another win Saturday, crushing Lake Stevens 39-26 in La Conner.

The victory lifted the Wolves to a flawless 4-0 heading into a doubleheader in Mt. Vernon Feb. 13.

Coupeville spread the offensive love around, with nine of its 11 players scoring, led by Jake Mitten, who worked the paint for a game-high 11.

Matthew Kelley and Dakota Eck each added six, while Connor Barton knocked down five.

Alex Jimenez (4), Caleb Meyer (2), Hawthorne Wolfe (2), Logan Martin (2) and Daniel Olson (1) also scored.

“The boys played well today,” said Coupeville coach Pat Kelley.

The Wolves, who are actually a mix of sixth and seventh graders, wove the two together successfully, while also taking an opportunity to have some of their younger players share the court at the same time.

“The starting sixth grade five of Barton, Meyer, Wolfe, Martin, and Daniel Barajas played nearly nearly seven minutes as a group vs seventh graders and did well,” Pat Kelley said. “Four of them scored during their independent time together.”

Martin knocked down “a nice eight-foot turn-around jump shot playing post” and Barton “made a steal for a layup going full court and made three of his four free throws.”

Lake Stevens cut the lead to five midway through the third before Coupeville slammed the door shut.

The Wolves were especially pesky on defense, where Matthew snagged 11 boards and made off with five steals to lead the charge.

Mitten and Olson both corralled five rebounds, Eck, Barton and Barajas pilfered two steals apiece and Michael Laska forced two jump balls.
