One step away from high school ball, the Wolves playing for Dustin Van Velkinburgh are in 8th grade.

The little sisters are here, to lay claim to the court.

Coupeville’s girls SWISH basketball teams have been ultra-successful in recent seasons, and there seems little reason to think it won’t continue.

The young Wolves, many of whom have now been playing together for several seasons, are working their way towards the high school team, all with an eye on continuing the success those older squads have also enjoyed.

This year’s 8th grade SWISH team has already beaten Orcas Island and Friday Harbor, while losing thrillers to big-city foes from Anacortes, Blaine and Mount Vernon.

The Wolves, playing without several injured players, had late leads on two of those three teams.

“We are playing really well; just missing shots,” said coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Should be a good group to watch throughout high school.”

Throw out the rankings.

The Coupeville 4th/5th grade boys SWISH basketball squad went into Saturday’s Tulip Tournament in La Conner seeded #6 out of seven teams.

Three games later, the Wolves had stunned the basketball world and were headed home with a 3rd place trophy.

Coupeville opened by thrashing the #3 seed, the Sedro-Woolley Heat, by a tasty margin of 31-15.

After being nipped 21-17 by #2 seed Anacortes in the middle game, the Wolves reached down and found some more March Madness to close the tourney.

Facing off with the #4 seed — the Sedro-Woolley Sonics — Coupeville ran them off the floor to a 36-22 tune.

The beat-downs keep coming.

Even playing without leading scorer Chelsea Prescott, the Coupeville 7th grade SWISH girls’ basketball squad pounded Mount Vernon 34-13 Saturday.

“We played a great all-around game,” said coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “All 10 girls that played, played with enthusiasm.”

Coupeville pressed the entire day, thoroughly frustrating their foes.

“We have a motto. Compete at such a level that we piss the other team off,” Van Velkinburgh said with a laugh. “Mission complete today.”

While everyone chipped in, three Wolves earned special praise from their coach.

Ja’Kenya Hoskins “had a big day. She was everywhere and scored the ball efficiently,” Izzy Wells “stood out” and Kiara Contreras “played solid defense and hit a three.”

They capped their seasons by putting a trophy on top of things.

Both of Coupeville’s SWISH girls’ basketball squads brought home hardware Saturday from their postseason tourneys.

The 6th grade Wolves collected a 4th place trophy, while the 7th/8th grade team finished 2nd.

That was despite getting the short end of the stick after romping through the season undefeated.

The older Wolves, instead of being rewarded as league champs, were shoved into a more dangerous postseason bracket.

They survived, upending an elite traveling Canadian team before falling to a very-talented Mount Baker squad in the championship game.

While the season ends for the 6th graders, the middle school hoops stars will kick off their school seasons Jan. 30.

Dustin

Dustin Van Velkinburgh and fellow Coupeville coaches are excited about the talent flowing through the pipeline these days.

Great day for Coupeville. Not so much for Friday Harbor.

The Wolves played, and won, four different girls basketball games against their Island rivals Saturday.

While the CHS varsity and JV get the big headlines, both of Coupeville’s SWISH teams deserve their moment in the spotlight as well.

The 7th/8th grade Wolves destroyed Friday Harbor 28-6, with hot-shooting Izzy Wells doubling up her foes by herself.

The win lifts the middle school hoops stars to 8-0 on the season for coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh.

Meanwhile, Lark Gustafson, working with an extremely limited bench, guided the Wolf 6th graders to a 16-13 victory.

Maddie “Mad Dog” Georges pumped home 14 by herself, with Hayley Fiedler garnering Coupeville’s other bucket.

Alita Blouin, Stella Johnson, Allie Lucero, Brionna Blouin and Maya Lucero rounded out the roster for the younger Coupeville team.

The undefeated juggernaut that is the 7th/8th grade team was led by Wells, who banked in 12, and Anya Leavell and Audrianna Shaw, who each tallied four.

Kiara Contreras, Chelsea Prescott, Kylie Van Velkinburgh and Ja’Kenya Hoskins had a bucket apiece, while Sam Streitler, Adair DeJesus-Ramirez and Lily Leedy also saw floor time.
