They played on, through some rain drops and a hail of goals.

Tuesday’s soccer games didn’t have the shiniest of results for the Coupeville High School booters, as both Wolf squads fell to 2A Sequim.

But, the photos turned out nicely, so there’s that.

William Nelson wasted no time, being named All-League as a freshman.

The future is bright.

Three Coupeville High School booters were named First Team All-League when 1A Olympic League coaches got together this week to hash out honors, and the trio was comprised completely of underclassmen.

Junior forward Abraham Leyva, junior defender Tanner Kircher and freshman midfielder William Nelson will all have a chance to return and add to their personal and team glory next season.

“A well deserved honor for these three guys,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson.

Leyva led the Wolves in scoring, peppering the nets with 14 goals, while Kircher was a lock-down beast on ‘d’ and Nelson did a bit of everything, popping up all over the field while always looking at ease.

Coupeville went 3-11 overall, 2-4 in league play, but the record was a bit deceptive.

A string of injuries to key players (Zane Bundy, Aaron Wright, Keegan Kortuem, Joel Walstad, Loren Nelson, etc.) made it difficult for CHS to ever field a full team.

Even down in numbers, the Wolves were rarely blown out and came within a goal or two of being 4-2 in league action.

Tanner Kircher

Tanner Kircher

Deeds, not words.

Tanner Kircher makes his statement, and it’s a loud one, by fiercely guarding his patch of the soccer pitch.

A skilled defender who has also successfully doubled as an emergency goaltender this season, he’s a strong, sometimes underrated, linchpin for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad.

Try and bring the ball into his territory and he will ruthlessly crush your dreams of scoring.

“One of my strengths is clearing the ball,” Kircher said. “I want to work on moving up with the offense to make some plays.”

The Wolf junior has spent much of his life on the pitch, following in the footsteps of older brother Nathan, a former CHS star himself.

“I’ve played soccer for about eight years and I started because my brother played soccer and I wanted to be like him,” Kircher said. “I enjoy the play making in soccer; it’s amazing when a play comes together.”

The two Kirchers eventually played together at CHS, one of the high points of Tanner’s soccer career.

With mom Dawn Brock claiming her status as one of the loudest ‘n proudest of any soccer mom in the land, it was a full-on family celebration.

“My brother has made a huge difference in my life,” Kircher said. “If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be playing soccer.”

Away from the game, he enjoys woodworking, while, on the field, he wants to help the Wolves nab a district playoff berth.

Soccer is Kircher’s only official school sport, but he’s game for just about any sport you can offer him.

“I don’t play any other school sports but I like to play anything that is physical.”

Sean Donley set up Abraham Leyva’s third goal of the season.

It’s a battle between buddies.

Coupeville High School sophomore soccer stars Abraham Leyva and Zane Bundy are vying for the team lead in scoring this season, with each young gun having netted three goals in the first four games.

Running mates up front for the Wolves, the duo have played select soccer together and are clicking as a two-headed threat for Kyle Nelson’s squad.

Tuesday, it was Leyva’s turn, as he found the back of the net during a physical game in Lakewood.

With the host Cougars ganging up on Bundy, who had scored in three straight games, Lakewood was able to hold off Coupeville, however, eking out a 2-1 victory.

The loss dropped the Wolves to 2-2 overall, 1-2 in the Cascade Conference. Both of Coupeville’s losses have been one-goal affairs.

CHS played without midfielders Cameron Boyd, who had his tooth broken off by a knee in the previous game, and Jason Knoll, who has a hurt ankle.

The Wolves also lost a third player, when sophomore defender Tanner Kircher left the game and had to make a visit to a local hospital after suffering a concussion and a bruised clavicle.

Even without key players, Coupeville took Lakewood almost to the wire.

A defense headed up seniors Brett Arnold and Jared Dickson shut down the Cougars for huge chunks of game time, only to have Lakewood senior Randy Anaya slip in the eventual game-winner in the game’s final moments.

It was Anaya’s second goal of the night.

Leyva’s goal was set up by Sean Donley, who notched an an assist.
