If you build it, they will get to play on it … eventually.

When the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team opens its season Mar. 21 against Anacortes, it will be the first time the Wolves will play a match at home since spring 2023.

Between then and now, the school moved its courts from next to the bus barn across the street and next to the CHS gym.

Bad weather at the time delayed the building process, sending the Wolf netters on the road for every contest last spring.

With the CHS boys’ tennis program having shut down several years back after losing a numbers battle, the Anacortes match will be the first-time players in red and black will be back in official action on their own playing surfaces.

Leading the way will be freshman Tenley Stuurmans, who advanced to the state tourney as an 8th grader, while playing tennis for the first time.

She held up well in her two matches in Yakima against veteran foes, taking a set and almost advancing to day #2 of the championships.

Back for another run at glory, Stuurmans will be joined by fellow returning players Brynn Parker, Delanie Lewis, Kauri Hamilton, and Sofia Phay.

In a hugely encouraging note, Wolf coaches Tim Stelling and Starla Seal have added 10 newcomers to the roster, ranging from 8th graders to seniors.

The expanded squad will compete against Friday Harbor for a Northwest 2B/1B League crown, playing four times, while also clashing with bigger schools such as South Whidbey, Anacortes, King’s, and Granite Falls across a 10-match schedule.

With expanded numbers, and a chance to play matches at home, the Wolf coaches are excited to welcome spring on the often-windswept prairie.

“Goals for this season are embracing growth and development establishment!” Seal said.

“Our biggest strength is the positive energy all of the girls have had from the first day of practice! They are vibing and have a fun and strong and positive learning mindset!”

With double digit roster numbers again, Coupeville will be able to fill out a complete slate once again when it comes time to play matches.

“Areas of growth are establishing two more doubles teams,” Seal said. “We have a lot of new players and hence the establishment of our team is a goal.

“Otherwise, I’m very happy and excited for our season and new courts!”

Mia Farris will destroy you. (Bailey Thule photos)

A freshman stole the spotlight on Senior Night.

Pouring in 11 of her team-high 14 points in the second half Friday, Tenley Stuurmans sparked the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team to a crowd-pleasing come-from-behind win against visiting Friday Harbor.

With the fab frosh scoring from all angles, and her veteran teammates all chipping in with key plays, the Wolves pulled out a 31-27 victory to close the regular season in style.

The triumph evened Coupeville’s final record in Northwest 2B/1B League play to 5-5, while lifting its overall mark to 8-10.

Next up is the double-elimination District 1/2 tournament, which kicks off next Thursday, Feb. 13.

The bracket is expected to be released Monday, allowing everyone to know if the Wolves host their opening game or hit the road.

For now, Megan Richter’s squad can bask in the afterglow of a stirring victory played out in front of a rambunctious audience on hand to bid CHS seniors Jada Heaton, Mia Farris, Madison McMillan, Lyla Stuurmans, and Katie Marti farewell.

Coming off the high of the pre-game festivities, the Wolves looked flat in the early going.

Once on the floor, Tenley Stuurmans broke her team’s four-minute-plus dry spell with a free throw, then threw down a layup off a nice pass from Heaton.

Still, Coupeville trailed 10-3 at the first break, and saw the deficit pushed out to 14-5 midway through the second frame.

Jada Heaton hungers for rebounds.

Looking for a spark, the Wolves found one, and her name is Jada Rose.

Heaton snatched a rebound away from a Friday Harbor rival, then banked the ball home, and suddenly things started clicking.

Coupeville closed the half on a 9-4 run, with Marti and McMillan knocking down buckets to cut away at the visitor’s lead.

Back within 16-12 at the half, the Wolves opened the third quarter on an 8-0 tear to claim their first lead of the night.

Danica Strong drilled a soft jumper, Mia Farris rose up to swat away a Friday Harbor shot, and CHS proved to be devilishly delightful on inbounds plays.

Tenley Stuurmans was the trigger woman, sliding a pass to Teagan Calkins for one bucket, but a play earlier she really shook things up.

With all four of her teammates lined up to one side, the Wolf freshman caught a defender napping, bouncing a pass off a Wolverines back, snagging the ball as it returned to her, then flipping it up and in for a game-busting layup.

Friday Harbor did fight back, actually pulling ahead 22-21 thanks to a bucket with just three seconds to play in the third quarter.

But the momentum had changed by that point, and Coupeville firmly controlled the action in the final frame.

Tenley Stuurmans amazes even herself.

Closing the game on a 10-5 surge, the Wolves got three buckets from Tenley Stuurmans, who was poppin’ jumpers and takin’ names, and two from Farris.

Mia the Magnificent” may have claimed in her Senior Night writeup that “I do not love basketball,” but she does seemingly find great joy in ripping out the hearts of her on-court rivals.

Netting Coupeville’s final two baskets of the night, Farris scored off of an offensive rebound and put-back, then on a silky layup with the ball threaded through the defense on a lob from Tenley Stuurmans.

Richter sent nine players to the floor in the regular season finale, with seven of them scoring, and all nine having an impact.

The younger Stuurmans netted her varsity career-high with those 14 points, while big sis Lyla didn’t score on this night, but was a buzzsaw on defense, repeatedly knocking the ball into the stands, her smile getting bigger each time she did.

Farris (6), Marti (3), Heaton (2), Strong (2), McMillan (2), and Calkins (2) rounded out the scoring, while Haylee Armstrong brought sizzle to the defensive end of the floor.

“We just need to do it for four quarters.”

As she pondered life post-game Friday night, Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball coach Megan Richter could see all the positives her squad showed against visiting La Conner.

But she could also see some negatives, and it was those down moments which sent the Wolves tumbling to a 43-30 loss.

Now 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-7 overall, the CHS girls are off until next Friday, Jan. 17, when they travel to Darrington for another conference rumble.

The bout against the Braves, coming in Coupeville’s first home game in three weeks, was a tense thriller for the first 12 minutes and change.

The Wolves came out with electricity rippling through their shooting fingers, netting back-to-back three-balls to open the game.

Teagan Calkins banked in the first one from the top of the arc, while Katie Marti splashed home a long rainbow from the right side to pass Hailey Hammer and become the 40th best career scorer across the 51 seasons played by CHS girls hoops teams.

The lead didn’t last long, as a jittery, skittery group of La Conner players who seemed to travel on every other play — without it being called — closed the opening quarter on a 13-3 tear.

But the Wolves weren’t going anywhere.

Marti drilled a jumper to open the second, Jada Heaton flexed her biceps with a putback off of an offensive rebound, and then Mia Farris zipped a truly beautiful pass through a forest of arms to set up Madison McMillan.

The ball arrived right on her waiting fingertips, the senior post player slapped home the layup while being smacked, and then she punctuated the play with a successful free throw.

That gave McMillan her 150th career point and pulled Coupeville within 18-16, setting off cheers from the crowd.

And then things fell apart. Big time.

The Wolves didn’t net another field goal from the mid-point of the second quarter to the mid-point of the fourth frame, with just two Tenley Stuurmans free throws during a 16-minute-plus dry spell.

That allowed La Conner to start pulling away, carrying a 29-16 lead into the half, before stretching things out to 38-18 by the end of the third.

And yet, Coupeville proved resilient.

The fourth quarter, or most of it, belonged firmly to the Wolves, as they clamped down on defense, then finally rediscovered their shooting touch.

Neither team scored for four-minutes-plus, until Haylee Armstrong tore off the bottom of the net, hitting her second three-ball of the game.

That sparked a 12-2 CHS surge, with Tenley Stuurmans pouring in seven of her team-high nine points during the frantic finale.

La Conner netted a last moment three-ball of its own to get the final margin back out to 13, but if you only watched the fourth quarter, you would have expected the Wolves to come away with the win.

Armstrong finished with six points to back up Tenley Stuurmans, with Marti (5), McMillan (3), Calkins (3), Heaton (2), and Farris (2) also scoring.

Danica Strong and Lyla Stuurmans rounded out the rotation, with the former hitting the boards with intensity and the latter using up every one of her available fouls as she harassed the Brave ballhandlers.

Rough first quarter, super-close final three frames.

Continuing a trend which seemed to affect every Coupeville team Monday night, the Wolf JV girls’ basketball team stumbled out of the gate, before turning on the intensity.

Ultimately, an early 10-1 deficit was a bit too much to overcome for the CHS young guns, who fell to 1-2 on the season with a 39-26 loss.

But hanging tough for the game’s final 24 minutes was a victory in itself.

“We fought a tough battle against a well-prepared Forks JV,” said Coupeville coach Scout Smith.

“Overall, it was a good game, and I was very proud of how we played.

“I never questioned our belief as a team that we could come back.”

The deficit was never more than two points in any of the final three quarters for Coupeville.

The Wolf offense was led by swing player Tenley Stuurmans, as the fab frosh exploded for a game-high 15 points while being limited to just two quarters of action.

Adeline Maynes (6), Chelsi Stevens (2), Ari Cunningham (2), and Capri Anter (1) also tallied points, with Marin Winger, Amelia Crowder, Lexis Drake, Willow Leedy-Bonifas, Sydney Van Dyke, Jeann Nitta, and Ava Lucero seeing floor time.

Smith praised her entire roster, from Cunningham and Maynes, who “were troopers playing every minute of the second half” to a duo who came up big on defense.

“Sydney did well defensively. She was disciplined in her role and protected the paint,” Smith said.

“Lexis brought a lot of energy defensively and forced a lot of turnovers towards the end of the game.”
