The next great track star is on her way.

While sophomore Makana Stone continues to shatter records for Coupeville High School, there’s another fast-rising sensation coming up through the middle school ranks to one day join her.

Coupeville Middle School 7th grader Lindsey Roberts, daughter of former CHS Athlete of the Year winners Jon and Sherry (Bonacci) Roberts, won all four of her events Thursday at a three-team meet in Granite Falls.

With wins in the 200, 1600 and 75 meter hurdles, plus the anchor leg on a victorious 4 x 100 relay squad, she sparked the Wolves to a team win over Lakewood and the host Tigers.

The CMS 7th grade boys finished second, while both 8th grade squads came in third.

Other multiple winners for Coupeville included Reed Richards, Mckenzie Meyer, Chris Battaglia, Ty Eck and Gabe Eck.

Makana Stone is getting faster, but the competition is getting fiercer.

Shattering the school record in the 400 for the third straight meet, the Coupeville High School sophomore made it around the oval at the Cascade Conference championships in 59.65 seconds Thursday.

It was the third-fastest time by a 1A runner this season, but not quite enough to win a title, as King’s Anna Parker threw down a time of 58.86.

Parker and Stone trail just Maya Jackson of Northwest (58.71), with the potential for all three sophomores to face off at state in Cheney at the end of May.

Stone’s performance in the 400, and her third-place finish in the 200, topped the Wolves as they competed in the 1A/2A league for the final time.

Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, is moving to the 1A Olympic League next season.

The Lakewood boys and King’s girls claimed team titles at the eight-team league meet.

Up next for the Wolves is the district meet at Lynden Christian May 14 and 16.

Now it gets freakin’ serious.

The regular season meets are done, and it’s on to the postseason run for the Coupeville High School track and field squads.

First up is the Cascade Conference championships Thursday, where the Wolves will face off with fellow 1A schools King’s and South Whidbey and the league’s five 2A teams.

It will be the final appearance for CHS, which moves to the 1A Olympic League in the fall.

After that comes the Last Chance Qualifier Friday, which gives athletes on the outside exactly what the title implies — a last chance to nab a qualifying time or throw to advance on to districts.

Districts run Wednesday, May 14 and Friday, May 16, and, after that, at least some Wolves would be expected to advance on through tri-districts (May 22, 24) and on to state (May 30-31).

Current Coupeville stars Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt and Marisa Etzell are all state meet veterans and are aiming for a return trip to Cheney, while fellow young guns like Lathom Kelley and Jared Helmstadter would like to make it a co-ed trip this year.

Makana Stone: An unstoppable force of nature. (John Fisken photo)

The best is back.

Recovering from a sore knee that kept her out of action, Coupeville High School sophomore sensation Makana Stone brought the subtle swagger back to the track oval Saturday. Then she brought the big city girls to their knees.

Busting out a PR, she lit up the field in the 400 at the 6th Annual BCS Invite in Juanita, slappin’ down all 21 girls who dared to line up across from her.

Her time of 59.75 seconds was more than a full second ahead of Shoreline Christian senior Natalie McPherson.

McPherson evened the duel a bit, nipping Stone by .11 of a second in the 200.

And this is no second-rate competition, as McPherson finished in the top four in both events at state as a junior. Stone’s time in the 400 is the second-fastest of any 1A runner this season.

Away from the track, the brightest day may have belonged to Wolf freshman Skyler Lawrence, who set PRs in both the shot put and discus.

Her fourth-place showing in the shot put tied with Jared Helmstadter (400) and Brandon Kelley (300 hurdles) for the best performances by a Wolf, non-Stone division.

Coupeville finished 12th out of 18 teams in the boys’ competition and 11th out of 19 teams on the girls’ side of the battle.

Hunter Hammer -- solid gold.

Hunter Hammer — solid gold.

The Page Hit King is an All-American.

Coupeville High School grad Hunter Hammer, who now throws at Trinity Lutheran College, finished third in the discus at the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) outdoor track and field championships in Georgia Friday.

His throw of 46.46 meters was good enough to earn him All-American status, while scoring big points for his squad in the team battle.

Hammer also finished fifth in the event named after him — the hammer throw — with a hurl of 47.39.

He will wrap up his tournament with an appearance in the shot put final Saturday. He is seeded tenth in the field.

During his time as a Wolf, Hammer was a star basketball player and shattered most of the school’s throwing records.

He continued on as a thrower for Everett Community College for two seasons before following his throwing coach to Trinity.
