Ty Eck rained down 26, best by any Wolf this season, in the JV loss.

Three steps forward, one step backward.

The Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad rolled into play Friday night on a three-game winning streak, but a poor first quarter threw a wrench into the gears.

Trailing 20-9 after the first eight minutes, the Wolves fought back hard but couldn’t overcome a steady Port Townsend team, falling 67-51 on the road.

The loss dropped Coupeville to 7-7 overall, 2-2 in league play.

Port Townsend sits atop the standings at 4-0, while the Wolves are in a tie with Chimacum (2-2) with five to play.

Klahowya (0-4) would be the odd man out right now, if the playoffs started tomorrow.

They don’t though, which gives Coupeville plenty of time to control its playoff fate and still make a run at a title.

The Wolves play their next three games at home, starting with Chimacum Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Friday night CHS was stung early and late.

In the first half it was RedHawk ace Kaiden Parcher, who went for all of his game-high 16 points before halftime.

In the late going, it was a 15-5 Port Townsend run to open the fourth that was the final blow.

Coupeville’s best run came in the second quarter, when Risen Johnson, Gabe Wynn and Wiley Hesselgrave each tossed in five points as the Wolves held an 18-14 advantage.

Jordan Ford paced CHS with a team-high 12, while Hunter Smith hit for nine.

Wynn and Hesselgrave each popped for eight, with Risen Johnson (6), JJ Johnson (3), Dante Mitchell (2), Jared Helmstadter (2) and DeAndre Mitchell (1) rounding out the scorers.

JV nipped:

Coupeville’s big two — Ty Eck and Brian Shank — combined for 43 points, but it wasn’t quite enough, as the Wolf young guns fell 64-53.

The loss dropped the JV squad to 2-10 overall, 0-4 in league play.

Eck was electric, going off for 26, the best by any CHS hoops player this season, boy or girl.

He rained down three treys along the way, scoring in every quarter, with a 10-point first quarter kicking things off.

Shank added 17 with a variety of inside moves, while Cameron Toomey-Stout banked home six. Andre Avila and Hunter Downes both chipped in with a bucket apiece.

A quick look at the final score wouldn’t tell the whole story.

As far as the stat keepers care, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team fell 65-54 to visiting Mount Vernon Christian Saturday.

The loss dropped the Wolf young guns to 2-8 on the season, and they’ll now be off until Coupeville travels to Chimacum Jan. 19.

But what that score doesn’t tell you is how CHS almost pulled off a stunning comeback.

Despite being saddled with severe foul trouble most of the game, which forced Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh to get creative with his lineups, the Wolves used a big fourth quarter to storm back into the game.

Trailing by 19 at the half, Coupeville cut the lead to five with 1:30 to play.

Unfortunately, they had to foul in an effort to get the ball back and the Hurricanes closed out the game at the line, tacking on a three-ball with 15 seconds left to balloon out the final score.

Freshman Ty Eck, the only player to score in every quarter, paced the Wolves with a team-high 18, tossing in four treys along the way.

Cameron Toomey-Stout added 13, with nine of those coming during the 22-point fourth quarter rally, while Brian Shank was steady with 10, all coming in the second half.

Ariah Bepler (5), Gabe Eck (4), James Vidoni (2) and Hunter Downes (2) rounded out the Wolf scorers, while Beauman Davis and Andre Avila also saw floor time.

Dec. 27 is a red-letter day for Wolf Nation.

At least five current and former Coupeville athletic stars popped into the world on this date, and that’s just the ones I know about.

Tennis/basketball two-way terror Marie Hesselgrave and soccer whiz kid Will Butela have moved on from CHS, so today we’ll restrict the focus to the trio who were still smack-dab in the middle of their prep sports careers — rising stars Gabe and Ty Eck and established record holder Lauren Grove.

The Ecks are only freshmen, yet have already had an impact from day one.

Both were immediate starters for the Wolf varsity football team in the fall, with Ty excelling as both a defensive back and receiver.

After an early-season injury to Hunter Downes, Gabe stepped into the most pressure-laden role on the field, quarterbacking a squad that had more than its share of problems blocking.

Despite running for his life a good deal of the season, the young hurler put up impressive numbers while learning under fire — stats which weren’t that far off from what senior Joel Walstad had compiled the season before.

Now the talented duo are deep into basketball season, and, after that, it’s expected they’ll punch their three-sport-athletes card with soccer.

Both brothers have talent for days, and, as they continue to get seasoned and fully discover what they can do, should become leaders on all their teams.

That’s a status Grove has already grown into, having matured from a talented young athlete to a confident, seasoned “old pro.”

Lauren is the very prototype of the three-sport athlete, having played something in all eight seasons she’s been in high school.

After two years of volleyball, she transitioned to soccer this fall and shocked a few people by becoming an immediate shut-down goaltender, despite having little experience.

Everyone knew she had speed (more on that later) but she also demonstrated smooth hands and an ability to read (and turn away) opposing shooters, and her growth as the season progressed was one of the biggest takeaways from a Wolf pitch squad which tied the school record for wins.

Now she’s a vital part of a CHS girls’ hoops squad which is cruising at 5-2 (including a tourney title at the Friday Harbor Tip-Off Classic) headed into a showdown with perennial power La Conner.

A ferocious ball-hawk, Grove gives the Wolves a zing on defense, while also beginning to show a willingness to step up and drop buckets on folks.

The perfect complement to Coupeville’s Big Three (Makana Stone, Mia Littlejohn, Kailey Kellner), it’s scrappy role players like Lauren who will decide how far this edition of the Wolves go.

And we haven’t even gotten to her real claim to fame, which is track.

An elegant, explosive runner, Grove already sits on the school’s record board, after being part of a transcendent relay team as a sophomore.

Before she made that cut, Lauren walked past me in the CHS gym hallway one day and pointed up at the school records, some of which have stood for three decades.

“That’s where my name is going to be,” she said, then softly smiled and skipped away.

Then she went out and backed up the (slight) boast in style, accepting congratulations but never crowing about how she had been right.

And that’s Lauren, a low-key, super-friendly (she’s never met a camera she couldn’t charm) young woman, fiercely loyal to her family and friends, one of the true bright, shining stars of Coupeville sports, for her spirit as much as her undeniable skills.

She is very easy to root for, because she is, at her core, just a great person first, and, if the Ecks want a role model as they begin their rise up the ladder, they couldn’t go wrong with emulating the girl who shares their birthday.

So, to all three of you, the established legend and the fast-rising stars of tomorrow, happy birthday. I look forward to all the highlights still to come.

Andre Avila (?)

Andre Avila (32), playing defense earlier this season, was a wizard with the ball Friday night.

Brian Shank was feeling it.

As the ball sank through the net, another three-point bomb having hit pay dirt, the Wolf marksman looked at his fingertips like they were on fire, his eyes wide with glee.

Then he shook his head softly, grinned and headed back up-court.

It was that kind of night for Shank and his teammates, as the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team shredded visiting Concrete 45-24.

Using the three-ball as their weapon of choice — four Wolves (Shank, Ty Eck, Beauman Davis and Luke Merriman) combined to net seven treys — Coupeville grabbed the lead a minute into the game and never looked back.

Trailing 3-0, the Wolves made their initial move in a hurry, knocking down three buckets in a 20-second span.

Shank banged home a rebound, Gabe Eck picked the pocket of a Lion ball-handler, then zipped in for a layup and then Shank capped things with a gorgeous trey off of an in-bounds play.

He wasn’t ready to stop there, adding a three-point play the hard way (slashing to the hoop for a bucket and an ensuing free throw), eventually raining down eight points in the first eight minutes.

But, even with Shank’s yeoman work, Coupeville was clinging to just a 15-13 lead after one quarter.

Enter Andre Avila and exit Concrete’s hopes.

The sweet-dribbling mighty mite brought his enthusiastic fan section to their feet with back-to-back highlight plays that broke the visitors will.

First Avila drew a pack of defenders, spun just out of their reach at the last second, and perfectly fed Merriman, who dropped a trey that barely ruffled the net as it went down.

On the next play, it was all Avila, as he spun, whirled, twirled, danced and broke approximately 17 ankles (maybe even his own) before dropping in the bucket of the night with a runner.

As the gym erupted and Concrete glumly called for a timeout, the hardest-working guy on the JV shot towards his bench, arms raised in the air, Rocky-style, huge smile on his face as Wolf varsity players chanted his name.

From there, it was put-the-hammer-down time, as Coupeville used a 22-6 tear over the second and third quarter to seal the win, which lifted the young guns to 2-4 on the season.

The Wolves got something from everyone on the roster, with Shank leading the way with a game-high 15.

Ty Eck added 13, including a team-high three treys, while Gabe Eck (6), Davis (3), Merriman (3), Avila (2), Ariah Bepler (2) and James Vidoni (1) all scored.

Ty Eck

Ty Eck, flashing the cold-blooded eyes of a true long-range assassin.

Gabe Wynn

Gabe Wynn? Apparently he’s so quick all the other players are still looking at where he was, even after he’s long gone.

James Vidoni

That moment when the rebound seems like it will never, ever come down. Good thing James Vidoni (40) is patient.

Wiley Hesselgrave

Wiley Hesselgrave picks up some more frequent flier mileage.

Ariah Bepler

Risen Johnson

You may think you will deny Risen Johnson, but spoiler: you won’t.

Luke Merriman

Fair warning. You ruffle even one of Luke Merriman’s perfectly-coiffed hairs and he’ll drop 30 on you.

The Wolves tasted the air up there, and they liked it.

Doing a lot of their work up above the court Wednesday, the CHS boys’ hoops squads rained defeat down on visiting Orcas Island.

As the varsity pulled out a last-second thriller and the JV turned a close game into a rout with a wild finish, travelin’ photo man John Fisken was on hand to document the happenings.
