Want to get out of the house?

Then I have a job for you. Or, actually, several jobs.

Central Whidbey Little League is hosting two All-Star tournaments next week at Rhododendron Park and is looking for volunteers to help make things sail along smoothly.

The league needs people for scoring, concessions and field prep from July 5-9.

Tournaments in play will be 9-10 softball and 10-11 baseball.

If you’re interested in giving back to your community, call Mariah Knoblich at (360) 632-6846 or email her at mariahknoblich@yahoo.com.

Don't disappoint Jazmine Franklin (left) and McKenzie Bailey.

Don’t disappoint Jazmine Franklin (left) and McKenzie Bailey.

New year, new opportunities for parents to step up.

With the start of school in Coupeville just five days away (seriously), the push is beginning to build support for the CHS Class of 2016 and its graduation night trip.

Volunteers are needed to help out with just about everything from running the concession stands at Wolf sports events to putting together fundraisers to figuring out how many cookies to bake David for writing articles like this.

I kid. I kid.

Chocolate chip always goes over nicely, though … just sayin’.

Anyway, back to the article.

If you’re interested in being part of the solution and want to know what you can do to help, you’re encouraged to pop over to the Parents of Coupeville Class 2016 Facebook page and join the movement.

The more people helping, the bigger the payoff in the end. Prove you can bring it home like the parents of the Class of 2015 did or never hear the end of it.

mollie

Mollie Bailey, the future of Wolf sports, would like to know someone out there will be ordering all the varsity letters she’s going to earn in the coming years.

Who’s gonna step up?

We’ve just rolled out of one school year, and are several months away from a new one, but that doesn’t mean things are totally quiet behind the scenes.

As Wolf athletes graduate, some parents fall off and others with younger kids rise to take their place, and now is a good time to think about helping make Coupeville High School athletics a success.

The school’s Booster Club, which keeps things humming year-round, has begun looking for people to fill a list of small, but important jobs.

In recent weeks they have used their Facebook page to put out the call for people interested in:

**Running the 50/50 raffles at home CHS football and basketball games

**Taking photos at games

**Ordering varsity letters and bars for teams at the end of seasons

**Ordering roses for Senior Night festivities

**Working as a membership coordinator for the club

**Helping with the scholarship committee, which hands out awards to Wolf senior student/athletes

Whether you have a son or daughter at CHS, or are just in the mood to help out cause you’re nice like that, now is the ideal time to get in touch with the booster club.

Yes, right now.

To find out more, pop over to the Booster Club’s FB page:

Mekare Bowen (left) with lil' sis Aria.

Mekare Bowen (left) with lil’ sis Aria.

Mekare Bowen is the most amazing young woman I have ever known.

I’m sorry. There is no argument. That’s it. End of story.

Miss Bowen, who I have seen grow up from a wee little lass causing good-natured havoc at Videoville and Miriam’s Espresso when her mom Dea worked there with me to the bright, confident, super-smart, supremely sweet college freshman she is now, is without peer.

Spend any time around her and you will be witness to greatness.

Whether she was casually writing a 500-page fantasy book as a teen or being a doting caregiver to lil’ sis Aria, Mekare exudes joy, love and friendliness, embracing the world and all in it.

What’s kind of remarkable is that she never changed.

Super-friendly little girl to serene, caring young adult, all done with the ease of a Matthew McConaughey-worthy “Alright, alright, alright.”

No grumpy teen years. No angst. At least not in public.

Her intelligence, her grace, her positive spirit, the radiance that flows from every pore in her body — they all grew and continue to blossom.

And now Mekare, having moved on from her time as a CHS cheerleader, is a freshman at Western Washington University, one with a plan to continue to reach out and help others.

She has been accepted to go to South Africa next summer for two weeks with Reach Out Volunteers. While there, she would help in a building program at an orphanage and in conservation work at a game park.

Which is where we, her many fans, can come in to the picture.

Mekare needs a small financial helping hand, and anyone with any sense should gladly be willing to kick in a few cents (or bucks).

Take a moment to click on the link below, read her words and help a truly wonderful young woman help others. It’s the best thing you could do today.
