She’ll play all day (and night)

Another milestone.

After opening her college volleyball career with 10 straight three-set matches, Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott got to play Saturday in a five-set thriller.

And it was a doozy.

Prescott and her Medaille College teammates had match point in the fourth set, thanks to a thunderous kill by the former Wolf, but couldn’t hang on, falling to host Wells College.

The 19-25, 25-20, 22-25, 32-30, 15-11 loss drops the Mavericks to 3-8 on the season.

Up two sets to one, Medaille claimed a 30-29 lead in the fourth frame after Prescott swatted a winner, only to see Wells escape by scoring the final three points of the set.

Forget about sets and just count the points, and it was still an amazingly close match, with Wells edging Medaille 113-111.

Prescott finished with nine kills, three assists, and 11 digs on the day, while Maverick teammates Halle Bogas (17 kills) and Haley Kennedy (38 assists) also filled up the stat sheet.

During her freshman season of NCAA D-III volleyball, Prescott has played in all 35 sets, racking up 53 kills, 83 digs, seven service aces, seven assists, a solo block, and six block assists.

Medaille returns to action Oct. 2, when it travels to Penn State-Altoona to open Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play.

Prescott nets first college win

Another first.

Playing in her fourth college volleyball match Tuesday, Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott came away with her first win.

Sparked by a five-kill, six-dig performance from the former Wolf, Medaille College ran visiting Wells College off the floor in straight sets.

The 25-14, 25-18, 25-22 win lifts the Mavericks to 1-3 on the season, and they’ll carry that record into the Medaille/Hilbert Invitational, which runs Sept. 10-11.

Prescott and Co. are scheduled to play Buffalo State, SUNY Poly, and Hilbert College during that tourney.

Playing at home in Buffalo, New York, the Medaille spikers produced a well-balanced stat-line Tuesday, with junior Halle Bogas (eight kills) and freshman Haley Kennedy (22 assists) among the leaders.

Prescott has played in all 12 sets the Mavericks have contested this season, racking up 19 kills and 23 digs thus far.

Kellner scorches college nets!!

Everything but the win.

Coupeville grad Kailey Kellner got her first college basketball start Monday and responded with season-highs in minutes, points, rebounds, assists and steals.

But, despite her best efforts, D’Youville College let a close one slip away in the final minutes, falling 66-58 to visiting Wells College.

The non-conference loss, coming in the home opener for Kellner and her Spartans teammates, drops them to 0-4 on the still-young season.

During her first three games playing college ball for the Buffalo, New York-based school, Kellner had come off the bench and earned decent minutes.

That changed Monday when she was inserted into the starting lineup and promptly scored D’Youville’s first six points on a pair of three-balls.

Kellner added a third-quarter layup, coming off of a steal, and a trey late in the game, to break double digits for the first time as a college player.

Her first three games? Eight points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist.

Monday vs. Wells? 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Kellner, who wears #33 in college, played a team-high 33 minutes in her first start.

The game was a back-and-forth fight all night, with D’Youville clinging to a 16-15 lead after one quarter.

The Spartans then busted out on a 10-2 run, sparked by Kellner’s assists, and seemed to be taking command.

It wasn’t to be, though, as Wells fought back to knot things up at 31-31 heading into the break, then inched ahead 47-44 after three quarters.

Kellner’s last trey closed the gap to 50-47, but D’Youville went a bit cold from the field down the stretch and couldn’t fight all the way back.

Wells, which captured its first win in three tries this season, was led by Carley Ryan and Kamarie Maturine, who went for 24 and 22, respectively.

Darian Evans banged away for 17 to join Kellner in giving D’Youville two players in double figures.

The Spartans get the rest of Thanksgiving week off, returning to action with a home game against undefeated Cazenovia College Sunday, Nov. 26.
