It was a weekend of champions.

Whidbey Island youth teams claimed titles in volleyball and boys basketball, dominating play and sending tremors through the surrounding communities.

The Whidbey Volleyball Club U15 team, which features six Coupeville High School spikers, won an eight-team tourney in Burlington, continuing a season of excellence.

Meanwhile, Coupeville’s 8th grade SWISH boys basketball team emerged as champs from a seven-team royal rumble run by Skagit County Parks and Recreation.

Both victories bode well for the future of Wolf athletics, as athletes in both sports continue to find success in both school and non-school events.

The pursuit of excellence never ends.

A batch of Coupeville spikers, hailing from both high school and middle school levels, are still out there chasing that volleyball dream.

The Wolves are playing for the Whidbey Volleyball Club, which brings together North, Central, and South Whidbey players, currently doing so with three teams.

The U17 squad, which won its pool at a tournament in Burlington Sunday, includes Coupeville stars Lucy Tenore, Taygin Jump, Ryanne Knoblich, Olivia Schaffeld, and Grey Peabody.

Gracing the U15 team are Jada Heaton, Mia Farris, Lyla Stuurmans, Madison McMillan, Katie Marti, and Taylor Brotemarkle.

And rounding out the Coupeville contingent are middle school spikers Ava Carpenter, Tenley Stuurmans, Jordaya Dowell, and Ava Ashby, who are on the U14 roster.

Travel ball is out.

Local high school and middle school spikers are not competing right now, and Tuesday the Whidbey Volleyball Club announced it is cancelling its season.

The decision was forced on the club by the double whammy of the COVID-19 pandemic, and by a lack of gym space in which to practice.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the WVC directed players and their parents to look to a pair of mainland clubs if they still want to play.

“There are clubs (Apex and SIVA) off-Island that will still be having a season since they have their own facilities and their tryouts are this weekend,” the WVC said.

“If your child would like to tryout, please reach out to those clubs.”

WVC, which launched in 2016, is a USA Junior Olympic volleyball club which has multiple teams in different age groups, and draws athletes from all parts of Whidbey Island.

In recent seasons, numerous Coupeville spikers, including All-Conference high school stars like Emma Smith, Maya Toomey-Stout, and Scout Smith have played for WVC teams.

A six-pack of Wolves ruled the volleyball world this weekend.

Coupeville High School stars Emma Smith, Ashley Menges, Maya Toomey-Stout, Zoe Trujillo, Scout Smith, and Hannah Davidson play for the Whidbey Volleyball Club 18U team, and they sparked that squad to a championship in the final tourney of the season.

Whidbey roared through pool and match play to claim 1st place in the Silver Bracket at the PSRVB regionals at Henry Jackson High School.

The team, which mixes players from several Whidbey Island high schools, finished second in pool play Saturday, then opened play Sunday by toppling the #1 seed in its bracket.

After taking a loss in their second match, the spikers bounced back to win two more bouts and walk away with the trophy.

Menges and Smith, who wrapped impressive four-year careers with the CHS volleyball program in the fall, graduate in June, but the other four Wolves are expected to anchor next year’s team.

The experience they picked up playing club will be invaluable, said their older teammates.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better tournament and team,” Menges said. “It’s definitely a different dynamic than school and having a lot of the Coupeville girls playing different positions made their game so much broader and they are so more well-rounded.”

She hailed Davidson, currently a CHS junior, for her play in the championship match.

“I would just like to throw out that Hannah had the best game I’ve ever seen her play in our last match,” Menges said.

Smith agreed with her fellow Wolf legend.

“This has been one of the best teams I’ve ever played with,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to play my last club tournament with.

“Also, the Coupeville girls have improved so much, and will make such a difference on the team next year.”
