Let the spikes hit the floor.

The Whidbey Island Volleyball Club U18 squad, which features nine Coupeville players, kicked off tournament play Sunday in Tacoma.

Even with Wolf big hitters Lucy Tenore and Grey Peabody sitting this one out, the Island team finished in a tie for 9th place out of 22 teams at the PJVBC Winter Classic.

Whidbey opened pool play by losing a three-set thriller to NW Juniors UA Black, falling 25-17, 25-23, 24-25.

Powered by their Coupeville spikers, the squad then rallied to beat Momentum Tsunami 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, earning second-place in its pool.

Advancing to the single-elimination gold bracket, Whidbey fell 25-12, 25-16 to Rainier U18 Summit.

The Island team features one South Whidbey player, three from Oak Harbor, and nine from Cory Whitmore’s Coupeville High School program.

Chloe Marzocca, Madison McMillan, Taylor Brotemarkle, Katie Marti, Mia Farris, Jada Heaton, Taygin Jump, Tenore, and Peabody rep the Wolves.

The Whidbey Volleyball Club, which will have two teams this season, has set tryouts and registration is live on its web site.

All your trophies are ours

It was a weekend of champions.

Whidbey Island youth teams claimed titles in volleyball and boys basketball, dominating play and sending tremors through the surrounding communities.

The Whidbey Volleyball Club U15 team, which features six Coupeville High School spikers, won an eight-team tourney in Burlington, continuing a season of excellence.

Meanwhile, Coupeville’s 8th grade SWISH boys basketball team emerged as champs from a seven-team royal rumble run by Skagit County Parks and Recreation.

Both victories bode well for the future of Wolf athletics, as athletes in both sports continue to find success in both school and non-school events.

Spikers chase club team glory

The U15 roster includes Taylor Brotemarkle (4), Katie Marti (back row, far left), and Madison McMillan, Lyla Stuurmans, and Jada Heaton (back row, third, fourth, fifth from left).

The pursuit of excellence never ends.

A batch of Coupeville spikers, hailing from both high school and middle school levels, are still out there chasing that volleyball dream.

The Wolves are playing for the Whidbey Volleyball Club, which brings together North, Central, and South Whidbey players, currently doing so with three teams.

The U17 squad, which won its pool at a tournament in Burlington Sunday, includes Coupeville stars Lucy Tenore, Taygin Jump, Ryanne Knoblich, Olivia Schaffeld, and Grey Peabody.

Gracing the U15 team are Jada Heaton, Mia Farris, Lyla Stuurmans, Madison McMillan, Katie Marti, and Taylor Brotemarkle.

And rounding out the Coupeville contingent are middle school spikers Ava Carpenter, Tenley Stuurmans, Jordaya Dowell, and Ava Ashby, who are on the U14 roster.
