Zane Bundy, seen here on the charge in an earlier game, punched in his second goal of the season Friday in a 3-0 win.

Now they’re rolling.

Recording their second-straight 3-0 win Friday, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad officially kicked off a winning streak.

This victory came in Puyallup, with host Cascade Christian bowing to the suddenly-potent Wolf attack.

Now 2-4-1 on the season, Coupeville will try and stretch the streak out to three when it travels to Forks Monday.

That will be a rematch (the Wolves knocked off the Spartans this past Monday on Whidbey) and will cap the non-conference portion of the schedule.

After that one, CHS has a run of six straight 1A Olympic League games beginning with a home game Thursday, Apr. 14 against Port Townsend (2-2-1).

Facing off with a win-less Cascade Christian squad Friday, the Wolves rattled home three goals, with three different players hitting the back of the net.

Abraham Leyva tallied his ninth goal, while keeping alive his streak of having scored in every game this season.

Fellow seniors Zane Bundy and Sebastian Davis netted scores as well. It was the second goal of the season for each of them.

Leyva and Zack Nall each picked up an assist while Wolf goalie Connor McCormick notched his second straight shutout.

“We played our best game to date,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “A very balanced game with some great defense, and a quick attack going forward.”

Once the wins started coming, they haven’t stopped.

Bouncing back after a tough bit of learning under duress, when it played several of the state’s top programs, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team has hit its stride in recent weeks.

Wednesday the Wolves laid down a 4-1 beat-down on host Friday Harbor, the team’s sixth straight victory.

Now 7-3 overall, 2-0 in Olympic League play, Coupeville hopes to double up on its league wins with a doubleheader at Klahowya today.

The two teams will finish off a suspended match from April 21 (the Wolves were rolling to a victory when rain hit), then play today’s regularly scheduled match.

Win both of those (and it would be a shocking upset if they didn’t) and the Wolves have all but clinched a league title.

All that remains ahead of them are two matches against Chimacum, a school they drilled 6-1 in their first meeting.

Coupeville plays those matches May 4 and 7, with a non-conference tilt at Sequim in between on May 5.

Complete results from Wednesday:

Varsity:

1st SinglesJacki Ginnings lost to Ashton Timmons 3-6, 6-3, 10-4

“This match was eerily similar to one they played last week,” said Wolf coach Ken Stange. “Jacki played well, but Ashton was once again able to come back and pull out the win.

Jacki will get back on track tomorrow, hopefully nailing down two wins.”

2nd SinglesValen Trujillo beat Yasmin Sarah 6-4, 6-1

Returning after missing a week with a bum shoulder, the Wolf sophomore sensation netted Player of the Match honors.

Valen’s back. She was a bit rusty in the first half of the opening set, but she started to find her form as she headed into the second.

“She put her foe away with relative ease.”

1st Doubles Payton Aparicio/Sage Renninger beat Summer Fox/Morgan Timmons 6-3, 6-2

“The frosh duo is starting to find a groove. They’ve played enough tennis together by now that each one can anticipate the other’s next move.

“They’re also learning on the fly, in a #1 spot. They’ve learned quite a bit from their losses; it’s good for them to gain the wisdom that comes from putting an opponent down.”

2nd DoublesMcKenzie Bailey/Wynter Thorne beat Sophie Dillery/Hailey Loucks 6-3, 6-0

“The Friday Harbor girls ran into McFlurry, an experienced doubles combo.

Wynter and McKenzie have played a lot of tennis together, and they put that experience to work, getting off the court in short order.”

3rd DoublesSydney Autio/Jazmine Franklin beat Isabel Gabriel/Halle Carrier 6-2, 6-0

“Having Sydney at #3 is almost unfair. What’s more, Jazmine was knocking the fuzz off the ball today.

“Their match was over in what seemed like the blink of an eye.”

Ana Luvera/Ivy Luvera beat Jillian/ Madeline 8-2

Micky LeVine/Mckenzie Meyer beat Mia McMillan/Nayleah Tucker-Belt 8-0

Coming off a spectacular showing at a weekend tourney, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad kicked off a four-match week Monday with a resounding 6-1 drilling of former league rival Lakewood.

The non-conference victory, coming against a bigger 2A school, was the third straight win for the Wolves and came even with one of the squad’s most successful players, Valen Trujillo, MIA.

Now 4-3 overall, Coupeville puts its 2-0 Olympic League record on the line this afternoon when it hosts Klahowya at 4 PM.

With Trujillo (a crisp 7-2 on the season) out for the day, Wolf coach Ken Stange juggled the lineup a bit, employing his usual magic touch to produce a winning outcome in which almost all the matches (save the usual suspect) ended quickly and decisively.

“It turned out that the other team was also short handed, and that put us back in the driver’s seat,” he said. “Today’s tennis was straight and to the point.

“Most of the matches ended quickly, which was a good thing. Most of the girls are still recovering from Saturday’s marathon of tennis!”

1st SinglesJacki Ginnings beat Christina Barber 7-5, 2-6, 10-7

The day’s longest match, at two-and-a-half hours, came from Ginnings, who seems to live for the epic brawls.

Jacki persisted. Even though she lost the second set, she didn’t wear down. She wore her opponent down, though. After the match, Jacki looked like she could play another one. She continues to impress me.”

2nd SinglesWynter Thorne beat Jillian Desond 6-1, 6-0

Wynter hit the ball with such great depth, making it seem as if her opponent was stuck to the back fence. It was a quick affair, lasting just under an hour.”

Making her varsity singles debut, Luvera delivered “a solid performance.”

1st DoublesPayton Aparicio/Sage Renninger beat Maddie De Young/Alex Wolfe 6-3, 6-2

2nd DoublesMcKenzie Bailey/Jazmine Franklin beat Gillian Romeis/Page Boersma 6-2, 6-4

McKenzie and Jazmine picked up where they left off on Saturday, cruising to a nice win. They had a bit of trouble in the second set, but they seem to have a knack for finding a way to win. They are an exciting pair of juniors!”

Lauren Grove, seen here in an earlier game, outscored Port Townsend 14-10 Friday night. (John Fisken photo)

They were a bit nervous. Didn’t need to be.

Only able to use top scorer Kailey Kellner for a half, so she’d be able to swing up to varsity and fill in for an ill teammate, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team scored three seconds into the game Friday and never looked back.

Kyla Briscoe beat two Port Townsend players to the ball, snatched the opening tip and spun around, driving in for a game-opening layup to set things off.

From there, the rout was on, with Lauren Grove overcoming a bout of motion sickness brought on by a rough ferry ride to pour in 14, outscoring the host Redhawks by herself in a 43-10 victory.

The third straight win for the young Wolves — tying the JV boys for the longest streak this season — it brought their record to 9-5 overall, 4-0 in Olympic League play.

And to think normally unflappable coach Amy King had a few concerns going into the start of play.

“Knowing Port Townsend had their taller girl this time around had me a little nervous,” King said, adding the Kellner and Grove situations to her early concerns. “That nervousness quickly got calmed.”

Sparked by Briscoe’s bucket, Coupeville attacked with great intensity, rolling out to a 22-2 lead at the half.

“Everyone did their part in anticipating passes, and played our usual tough, tough defense,” King said. “Lauren Grove had many key steals in the first half, sprinting down the court to score.

“When Port Townsend tried to dribble or pass away from Grove, they ran into Lauren Rose, who matched Grove in the intensity and determination to take the ball on a trip to our end of the court.”

The Wolves held the Redhawks completely scoreless in the second quarter and surrendered just four points through the first three quarters.

Only a few desperation shots near the end of the game allowed Port Townsend to finally crack double digits.

Allison (Wenzel), Brisa (Herrera), Tiffany (Briscoe) and Skyler (Lawrence) worked hard disrupting their offense,” King said. “The only shots they got without harassment were outside of the three-point line.

“In the fourth, two players threw up shots just trying to get points on the board and hit one each,” she added. “The posts made sure no shots went up in the key.”

With the game well in hand, the Wolves used the latter stages of the game as a competitive scrimmage.

“In the fourth we called off steals and worked on our plays,” King said. “No shots until the shot clock hit 10 seconds left.

“We drew up a play for Brisa, executed perfectly and she hit a swish. Very exciting!,” she added. “The girls played great. It was the perfect way to end the week.”

After shaking off the after-effects of the choppy water, Grove was money all game long, compiling 14 points, nine rebounds and five steals to pace the Wolf attack.

Kellner (seven points, four rebounds and three steals), Lawrence (six points, five rebounds), Kyla Briscoe (six points, three rebounds, two steals) and Rose (six points, six steals) were hot on her heels.

Herrera (two points, six rebounds), Wenzel (two points, four rebounds, two steals) and Tiffany Briscoe (three rebounds, two steals) all chipped in with big-time contributions, as all eight Wolves on the roster captured their moment in the spotlight.

Jacalyn Hefflefinger (right) has scored five goals in her last five games.

Not even the refs can stop this team.

Despite “900 offsides calls,” the Whidbey Islanders GU18 select soccer team rolled to its fifth straight win Sunday afternoon, bouncing their hosts, Tracyton Velocity, 2-1 in a game that wasn’t remotely as close as the score might indicate.

Now 6-2 in league play, the Islanders got big goals from Jacalyn Hefflefinger and Bailee Olson, and would have netted more if over-eager refs hadn’t blown the whistle every three seconds.

It was Hefflefinger’s fifth goal in as many games, while Olson netted her first score as a member of the Islanders.

Whidbey used a superb bit of teamwork to grab its first goal.

Jenn Spark, the master of the corner kick, popped a ball to Paige Waterman, who laid it off to a rampaging Erin Rosenkranz.

Her shot on goal whacked a Velocity defender and bounced cleanly to Hefflefinger, who did what she does better than just about anyone on the pitch — put it in the back of the net while the goalie grasps at empty air.

Frustrated by Tracyton’s offsides trap, the Islanders turned it to their advantage on Olson’s goal.

Timing her run perfectly to keep the whistle dry in the ref’s mouth, she snared a beautifully placed pass from Hailey Erbe and crunched the ball past the diving keeper.

With a lead to hold, Whidbey goalie Kenzie Perry and her rugged band of defenders were fairly spotless, shutting Tracyton down.

“Our defense remains, easily, the best D in the league!,” said Islander coach Sean LeVine. “The D made one error today and they capitalized, which is a fluke! I’d be perfectly happy with one error per game.”

The Islanders, who sit just one point out of second place in league play, now host three straight home games at Ft. Nugent.

Whidbey plays twice next weekend — Saturday, Mar. 15 (12:30 kickoff) and Sunday, Mar. 16 (2 PM).
