Some wins, some losses, but just a taste

It begins, again.

The calendar has clicked over to September, and with that the 2026-2027 high school athletic year is underway.

Only a handful of games are in the books, but it’s enough to trigger the first of our weekly look at standings for Northwest 2B/1B League teams.

We’ll be back each Sunday to offer updates as volleyball, soccer, and football play out, while cross country and cheer are largely absent from these stories since team win/loss records really don’t exist in the world of harriers or spirit team leaders.

While Coupeville only has one game played at this point — a 34-12 loss to Klahowya on the football gridiron — things pick up a bit as we head into the first full week of action.

Girls’ soccer is the busiest Wolf team, with a road trip to Lopez Island Thursday followed by a home clash with Mariner Saturday, while all the other CHS teams vie once.

Football travels to Raymond-South Bend Friday, cross country treks to Bellingham Saturday for the GearUp Northwest Preview, while boys’ soccer and volleyball debut in front of home fans.

The booters host Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood under Friday Night Lights, with the spikers welcoming Mariner to town a day later.

Spikers launch new season

The spikes are flying once more.

Whidbey Island’s three high schools kicked off volleyball season Saturday with a jamboree in Oak Harbor featuring Wolves, Falcons, and Wildcats in action.

Coupeville’s varsity, repping a 2B school, held its own against their 3A hosts and 1A South Whidbey, leaving second-year coach Scout Smith in a good mood.

“Overall, it was a really positive experience for our team,” she said. “We had some really good success and figured out some places we need to continue to fine tune.

“Really proud of the way the girls went out and played hard.”

Coupeville’s roster is a mix of experienced vets and newcomers, and the jamboree gave both a chance to prep for the coming season.

Smith hailed senior Haylee Armstrong as well as a pair of fab frosh who stepped right into the spotlight with style.

“Shoutout to Haylee for the leadership and level-headedness she demonstrated today,” Smith said. “She was an absolute rock on the court that we could always count on.

“Additionally, shoutout to our two freshmen, Zariyah (Allen) and Rhylee (Inman), who played beyond their years today and made a noticeable impact in their varsity debut.”

JV debuts:

The emphasis was on continued improvement for Coupeville’s second unit, which split sets with South Whidbey and hung tough with an Oak Harbor squad which resembled a varsity group.

“Today was definitely a good learning experience for the girls,” said JV coach Alita Blouin. “I can see the vast improvement just from the first set to the fourth set.

“They seemed more confident as they got more comfortable with each other and playing in front of others.

“I’m really proud of how they played and I’m excited to see how much they are going to improve as the season goes on.”

 

Up next:

Coupeville’s spikers start regular season play next Saturday, September 12 when they host Mariner in non-league matches.

Action begins at 1:00 PM, with the JV taking the floor first.

Different uniform, same stellar results

They never saw her coming.

Wearing #7 instead of her usual #2 because of a uniform issue, Coupeville grad Lyla Stuurmans made her presence felt Wednesday, piling up some impressive stats to spark the Skagit Valley College volleyball squad to another win.

Powered by their incognito sniper from Cow Town, the Cardinals rallied to KO host Walla Walla 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21, running their win streak to four matches and counting.

SVC, now 5-2 on the season, goes for a three-match sweep on the East side of the state Thursday, facing off with Yakima Valley.

Regardless of which uniform she wore, Stuurmans was dominant against Walla Walla, ripping off 11 kills and scraping the floor for 19 digs.

She also picked up both a solo block and a block assist on her way to recording 12.5 points on the day.

Having played in all seven matches, Stuurmans sits with 44 kills, two assists, 11 service aces, 72 digs, five solo blocks, seven block assists, and 63.5 points.

She’s still a spike machine

Once again, she rose to the moment.

Coupeville grad Lyla Stuurmans, now a sophomore at Skagit Valley College, filled up the stat sheet Tuesday as the Cardinal volleyball squad kicked off a three-game trip to the Eastern side of the state with a big win.

Powered by the former Wolf, SVC bounced host Columbia Basin 25-20, 25-22, 28-30, 25-21 in a match played in Pasco, lifting its record to 4-2 on the season.

Stuurmans and Co. now move on to play Walla Walla Wednesday, before wrapping things with a tilt against Yakima Valley Thursday.

After that, the Cardinals are off until September 9, when they travel to Oregon for multiple matches.

Scott and Sarah’s oldest child racked up 12 kills, 13 digs, and a service ace against Columbia Basin, accounting for 13 points.

Some of her biggest plays came at crunch time, as well.

Stuurmans smacked a winner to hold off a set point in the third frame, before coming back around to help Skagit close things out in the final set.

With SVC up 22-21, the former CHS Athlete of the Year peppered Columbia Basin with a kill, before serving out the match from the stripe, setting up teammate Lily Starr for the final two winners of the evening.

On the season Stuurmans sits with 33 kills, two assists, 11 aces, 53 digs, four solo blocks, six block assists, and 51 points.

Farris firing on all cylinders

She’s dangerous everywhere.

After starting the season as a libero, Mia Farris bounced back into a hitting-heavy role this past weekend as the Whatcom College women’s volleyball team scrambled to deal with injuries.

No matter where the Orca coaches placed the Coupeville grad, she responded in style, peppering a series of foes as WCC battled through four intense matches on the road.

And while Whatcom only came out on top in one of the four, dropping its record to 3-5 on the season, Farris more than held up her end of the bargain.

The former two-time CHS Athlete of the Year winner collected 12 kills, 13 service aces, one block assist, and a team-high 51 digs, while racking up 24.5 points while facing off with Spokane, North Idaho, Green River, and Wenatchee Valley.

On the season Farris has 12 kills, 12 assists, 17 aces, 119 digs, and 29.5 points, and leads Whatcom in digs, sitting 47 ahead of the team’s #2 floor scraper.

She and her teammates, who include a former Northwest 2B/1B League rival in Kayleigh Collins of Concrete, return to action September 4-5, when they travel to Columbia Basin College for another four-pack of games.
