Spring Break may have been on their minds, but, before they went, they had a butt-whuppin’ to administer.

Playing their final match before a nearly three-week gap in the schedule (they don’t return to the court for a match until April 15), the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis players pounded visiting Lakewood every way possible Wednesday.

The Wolves won the varsity match 4-1, then swept all four JV matches just for good measure. Not bad for the smallest 1A school in the state facing off with one of the biggest 2A schools in the Cascade Conference.

“It was a strong showing all around,” said CHS coach Ken Stange. “It felt good to get back in the win column after sustaining two beatings, especially since we have quite a bit of time off before we compete again.”

The victory, coming on the heels of losses at Blaine and South Whidbey, improved Coupeville to 3-2.

Complete results:

Varsity:

1st Singles — Allie Hanigan beat Jackie Stover 6-0, 6-0

Allie was in the driver’s seat the whole way.”

2nd Singles — Jacki Ginnings lost to Christina Barber 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

Jacki generated a good rhythm in the first set, hitting effective serves and moving her opponent around the court. She continues to develop her singles game, and is gaining control of her ground strokes.”

1st Doubles — Samantha Martin/Sydney Aparicio beat Kylie Staley/Zaya Tsengelmaa 6-3, 6-1

“This was a solid win for my #1 duo. They pulled away from their opponents halfway through the first set, playing smart and consistent tennis, and choosing the right opportunities to put the ball away.

Samantha was particularly dominant at net, while both she and Sydney hit solid shots from the baseline. They seemed to have a little extra pop on their serves, too.”

2nd Doubles — McKenzie Bailey/Wynter Thorne beat Alex Wolf/Maddie DeYoung 4-6, 7-6(7-3), 10-6

McKenzie and Wynter left it all on the court. They came out with their biggest win of the year, as well!

Wynter has been ill with bronchitis. It hasn’t stopped her from getting busy on the court. After missing Friday’s match at Blaine, she got back in the mix despite her fatigue. She was on the mend today, but not many kids would have played, if they were in Wynter’s condition.

“To top it all off, McKenzie was under the weather. They blew me away with how much focus and grit they showed out there today.”

3rd Doubles — Sydney Autio/Valen Trujillo beat Lexi Zbiegien/Erin Espeland 6-1, 6-0

“This was a new pairing and it worked out well. I’m going to try it again after we come back from spring break.

Sydney and Valen showed some good chemistry for a duo who hadn’t even played together in practice. They were energetic and focused, and each seemed to know where the other was and what the other was going to do.”

JV:

4th Doubles — Ivy Luvera/Ana Luvera beat Courtney Young/Courtney St. Jean 8-2

“The twins have played together before, and the Lakewood duo was no match for the Wonder Twins.”

5th Doubles — Haleigh Deasy/Maureen Rice beat Gillian Romeis/Paige Boersema 8-5

Maureen and Haleigh don’t usually make it look pretty, but they almost always come up with a win, and today was no exception.”

6th Doubles — Jazmine Franklin/Aura Corredor beat Freddie Stradthoff/Anna Drabloes 8-2

“It only took us one exchange student to beat Lakewood’s pair of exchange students!”

7th Doubles — Bree Daigneault/Valen Trujillo beat Kathryn Winder/Brianna Scheider 8-0

“We were without Micky LeVine today, so Valen doubled back to play with her other partner in crime, Bree. They won against Blaine, they won three times against South Whidbey, and they won today!”

Dananacious Maxie

Dananecious Maxie

There’s a new sprinter in the game, and by the time you say her name, she’ll have run past you several times.

Dananecious Maxie is bubbly, outgoing and quick. Put that all together with a strong belief in herself, and the Coupeville High School track team has another weapon to employ on an already-loaded girls’ squad.

“I enjoy my track homies and how we are open with each other and like to have fun and encourage each other,” Maxie said. “My coaches are the most fun coaches I ever had and they care about us and our life.

“Shout-out to my inspiration — Mr. (Randy) King and (Tom) Fournier,” she added. “They wanna see us succeed.”

Maxie came up in sports, playing volleyball, softball, soccer and AAU basketball in elementary and middle school. But track, where she competes in the 100, the long jump and on the 4 x 100 relay team, is a new challenge for her.

“I always wanted to do it,” she said. “My strengths are being strong and I’m a fast learner and I’m open to do and try new things.

“I would like to work on my speed and endurance,” Maxie added. “Also believing in my self and knowing I’m a conquerer from within. My goals for this season are to be everything that I am in track and to win first place sometime and have confidence while running.”

Her confidence has been bolstered by a strong family that looks out for her and helps her grow every day.

“The most important thing my family, my mom and dad Dannette and Alonzo Boyles, they challenge me every day with their daily parenting skills,” Maxie said. “I was also taught to believe in my self and never let anybody tell me something that I’m not.

“God is always by my side, always have faith,” she added. “My sisters and brothers, because we always have fun no matter what.”

Away from the athletic fields, Maxie enjoys her history class.

“I like it because we laugh and learn and do everything within the hour that we have and we make Mr. King crazy,” she said.

No matter what she’s doing, Maxie always stay true to the beat, as well.

“I like to sing, dance and write music,” she said. “I live music in general. Music is my homie!!”

It was a dark and stormy night and then a couple of soccer games broke out.

Tuesday night in Coupeville was your typical damp, dank early taste of spring, but that didn’t stop the Wolves from facing off with Cedarcrest in two brawl-until-the-buzzer battles.

On hand to capture the action was traveling photo man John Fisken, who provided us with the images above.

I'm still here. Where are you?

I’m still here. Where are you?

So, you all screamed and sobbed and freaked out and then it got really, really quiet.

It was cute that you all went into the waters off of Whidbey one time, for 12.6 seconds, for the winter cold water challenge.

Seriously. Cute.

Now, in my best Clint Eastwood voice, get out of my Cove, you lil’ punks.

I was doing this before you were, and I’ll be doing this long after you. Today was Day #13 of Year #4 in the less-than-warm waters of Penn Cove.

167 days in 2011. 133 days in 2012. 222 last year.

535 days so far, with a huge chunk of those days featuring twice-a-day visits — something I’ll work back into as we get into the warmer days of oh … April?

Want to find me? Listen for the ungodly scream as Penn Cove shoots liquid ice up my nether regions.

Cause some of us aren’t just one-timers.

Hey, they played almost two innings this time. That’s a start.

After having three of its first four games rained out, the Coupeville High School softball squad actually made it to Sultan Wednesday, took the field, scored some runs, worked a few kinks out and … then it started raining again.

The game was called with Sultan holding a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second, and the two squads will pick up where they left off the next time they face.

Most likely, the game would be finished as the first half of a doubleheader April 14, when Coupeville is set to return to Sultan. The schools are scheduled to play three game this season, with the Turks coming to the Island May 5.

With the game put on hold, the Wolves remain a perfect 1-0. They are scheduled to host their next three games, starting with Cedarcrest Thursday at 4 PM.

In its brief return to the diamond, Coupeville played strongly.

Breeanna Messner crunched a double, sliding in safe even after slipping on the wet infield dirt after rounding first.

Madeline Strasburg snagged a fly ball in center, as well, then spun and airmailed a great throw to Jae LeVine at second, catching a straying Turk runner for a double play.
