The smile was deceptive. She lived to rip arms off.

The smile was deceptive. She lived to rip arms off.

No one is flawless.

That being said, Jodi (Christensen) Crimmins comes pretty dang close.

The legend of her as a basketball player still echoes down the hallways at Coupeville High School.

They say when the wind blows off of the prairie, shoots through a window at CHS and creates an eerie sound, that it’s actually the long-repressed wail of one of her former basketball teammates.

The doomed girl wanders the hallways, still looking for the arm they lost that time they tried to reach for a loose ball at the same time Jodi, a one-woman Wolf wrecking crew, latched on to it.

She was a beast. A beast, I say.

If the basketball was anywhere in play during those days, Jodi was a split-second away from snatching it, elbows flying like Ginsu knives, nostrils flarin’, eyes rollin’ in the back of her head.

There are grown women who still cry, to this day, when they try to explain the terror she made blossom in their hearts.

And that’s just her teammates who had to go up against her in rebounding drills… (ooh, rim shot).

Which is amazing, because, off the court, you will never find a more genuinely sweet, caring, lovely, wonderful woman.

My mom, who worked with Jodi in the kitchen at Camp Casey when Mrs. Crimmins was a young lass, adored her.

Rarely did a day go by when she didn’t gush about Jodi, and rightfully so.

Over the years, from the time I wrote a feature article about her for The Whidbey News-Times during her basketball glory days, to the time period where we worked together at Videoville and Miriam’s Espresso, to today, when she spreads joy and learning as an elementary school teacher, she remains the same.

Oh, she’s gotten married, had two children, and made a lot of other people gush about her along the way.

But Jodi, who celebrates her birthday today, remains that bright, shining light in the sky to everyone who has been blessed to know her.

All you need to know is my mom adored her, and my mom was a very good judge of character.

Cue the “CSI: Miami” scream. Matt Shank can only drop his sunglasses David Caruso-style in response.

Everyone thought this group came from Sweden just to run. the real reason: "Savalza! He is, how you say, bigger than Bieber, yes, in our country!!"

Everyone thought this group came from Sweden just to run. The real reason: “Savalza! He is, how you say, bigger than Bieber, yes, in our country!!”

"Oh, it's true, it's true. I'm huge in Sweden."

“Oh, it’s true, it’s true. I’m huge in Sweden.”

Nearly 300 runners lined up for Saturday’s Race the Reserve. One was brave enough to come off the line at the crack of dawn without a shirt.

More beast than man, a mythic figure whose exploits still waft across the fog-enshrouded Island of his birth, Danny Savalza can not be tamed.

He must run free. It is his nature.

He does not live in our world, we live in his.

Accept it and become one with your inner Savalza. It is your only salvation.

The Black 'n Blue Sisters -- CHS hoops legends Lexie (left) and Brittant Black.

The Black ‘n Blue Sisters — CHS hoops legends Lexie (left) and Brittany Black.

Lil' rascals.

Brittany and girlfriend Megan King.

Brittany and girlfriend Megan King.

Joy.

Pure, unbridled joy.

Every time Brittany Black stepped on the basketball court, she played with a passion, a fury, a total commitment to her teammates and herself, that was uncanny.

But, through it all, she played with joy. With a love for the game that radiated out of every one of her pores.

She wasn’t playing the sport because she had to, or because others wanted her to be out there on the court.

Brittany played because she lived, breathed and loved hoops with a burning passion.

Through standout years at Coupeville High School and then as a college player in Alaska, Black, along with big sis Lexie, was a shining example of everything a Wolf could, and should, be.

Of course, that hasn’t changed much in the years since, as she has gone on to stellar work as a hoops coach and personal trainer ( https://www.facebook.com/BrittanyBlackCPT).

What also hasn’t changed is that she is, quite simply, a freakin’ awesome person, one of the rare handful of people in this world who simply makes the joint better by existing in it.

Britt, who celebrates her 26th birthday today, is a local hoops legend. She’s a better person.

Hopefully she knows how special we all think she is, and how happy we are to see her do well in life.

Few things in life bring as much happiness as seeing Miss Black light up, her graceful smile beaming out at the world.

Never stop smiling, Brittany. Ever.

Emma Puharic

Puharic (back row, fourth from left) during her days as a CHS softball sensation.

She’s like a freakin’ ray of sunshine, she is.

Former CHS softball player Emma Puharic hits the big 2-2 today, and, while she might be a tad older and wiser, she’s still one of the most genuinely likable people you’ll ever meet.

Bubbly and vivacious, Puharic, who splits her time these days between working at Christopher’s on Whidbey and building her own Isagenix empire, is an ever-smiling force of nature.

There is little she can’t do, and much she will accomplish, with her giddy laugh trailing along behind her.

Emma is now, and has always been, a winner. More importantly, she’s just a wonderful person through and through.

Her heart is epic.

I hope her day is incredible, and truly worthy of her. Cause she deserves the best.

Happy birthday, Miss Puharic. Don’t stop ’till you rule the world (even more than you already do.)

Clay Hughes

Clay Hughes

He’s still The Man.

His high school football playing days may be done (heck, he’s even graduated from college at this point and has a real job), but Clay Hughes remains a larger-than-life myth in Wolf Nation.

They whisper about him in hushed tones, nodding quietly as they talk about how he would explode through the line, scattering South Whidbey players with every carry.

You can look at the numbers and know he was good.

StatewideStats.com tells you Clay rushed for 1,131 yards as a Wolf, crossing the 100-yard barrier five times.

Three times he broke 150 yards, crushing Concrete for 164 yards, ripping Sultan for 159 and decimating King’s for 158.

Though, in the end, probably none of those performances topped his 119-yard throttling of South Whidbey in Week 6 of 2006.

Coupeville obliterated the Falcons 27-8 that night and the tears flowed from Langley for weeks.

Nice.

Whether wearing the red and black and bouncing off of would-be tacklers or operating in the world of RV sales, as he does now, Hughes has never settled for second best.

So, today, on his birthday, we hail the once and future king and remind him of one thing.

You ‘da man, Clay. You ‘da man.
