An old enemy hurt the Wolves one final time Thursday night.

Too often this season third quarter blues derailed strong starts for the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad. Playing in their season finale at Granite Falls, it was more of the same.

Up by five at the half, the Wolves were outscored 22-7 coming out of the locker room and couldn’t recover, taking a 76-54 loss.

The defeat, coming in the squad’s final-ever Cascade Conference game — CHS leaves the 1A/2A league in the fall to join a new 1A-only division in the Olympic League — dropped Coupeville’s final record to 3-17 overall, 1-13 in league play.

With a league win at Lakewood and non-conference home victories over Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island, the Wolves tripled their win total from the past two seasons (1) combined.

The Wolves, who were led by Anthony Bergeron’s team-high 17, built a 35-30 lead through the first 16 minutes of play.

But the host Tigers, playing on their Senior Night, rallied to take control in the second half, rolling to a 46-19 advantage over the final two quarters.

Sophomore Wiley Hesselgrave poured in 15 to back Bergeron, while Nick Streubel pounded down low for 10. Gavin O’Keefe (5), Morgan Payne (3), Aaron Trumbull (2) and Matt Shank (2) rounded out the Wolf scorers.

It was the final game in the red and black for Coupeville’s four seniors — Bergeron, Streubel, O’Keefe and Payne.

You can knock Jamar Jenkins down, but you can’t knock him out.

The Coupeville High School band director got plowed by a Sultan player chasing a loose ball Tuesday night, but, after shaking it off, he was back up and leading his band through its paces shortly after.

Half-man, half-music Terminator. The legend rocks on.

The legends will return.

Saturday brings the annual Tom Roehl Roundball Classic back to the Coupeville High School gym, and with the arrival of the hoops fundraiser comes the return of former Wolf greats.

Sherman. Bagby. Keohane. Van Velkinburgh. Stuurmans. Sellgren.

Many of them will be there, and more, as teams of Wolf alumni (with some Oak Harbor and South Whidbey players sprinkled in cause someone has to lose) vie for the trophy while raising money to help fund scholarships for CHS students.

Action runs from 10-4 tomorrow. For more info head over to:

Hoses beat guns.

Holding on to their trophy, Whidbey Island firefighters bounced their cop counterparts 52-38 Saturday night to take the 2nd annual Guns vs. Hoses benefit basketball game.

Money raised from the popular event was donated to the Goheen family, who lost twin daughters Janesah and Janeah in a Halloween-night accident. Toys were also collected for the North and Central Whidbey Holiday House.

On the scene, and firmly rooting for the fire boys, was madly clicking photographer Sherry Roberts, who was kind enough to let me share these photos.

Registration is now open for the annual Tom Roehl Round-Ball Classic, which is set for Saturday, Dec. 28.

The annual basketball tournament, which helps raise funds for scholarships for Coupeville High School students, will run from 10-4. This year it will be followed by a community bowling social at Ebey Bowl from 6-9.

Players can register as a team or as a free agent to be placed on a team. The tourney drew six teams last year and is aiming for eight this year, said event organizer Noah Roehl.

If possible, teams are encouraged to register before Dec. 20 to allow organizers to plan a fairly accurate order of tourney t-shirts.

To register, sponsor a team, contribute to the scholarship fund or find out more about former long-time Wolf coach Tom Roehl, whose memory the tourney and scholarship honor, head over to http://www.tjroehl.org.

If your questions aren’t answered there, contact Noah Roehl at 720-5662.
