Monica Vidoni

Monica Vidoni

Dear Monica Vidoni,

As you celebrate your 18th birthday today, I just want to pass on a few thoughts from those of us in the stands at your games.

We are proud of you and the confident young woman you are becoming.

The growth you have shown in the past year, in all your sports and in life, is impressive.

Seeing you walk tall, more sure of yourself, of your value in this world, is reassuring.

Never doubt your self-worth. You are capable of great things in life, Monica.

If there are those who make you doubt this, even those close to you, they are wrong. They underestimate you and that is their problem, not yours.

Life is not always easy, but you are strong and will survive. You will thrive.

I believe, and so do many others, that you are a wonderful young woman. Give others a chance to see that side of you on a daily basis, and it will come back to you.

Never stop believing in yourself, Miss Vidoni. Rise up and reach for greatness, both on the athletic field and off.

You have far more fans than you may believe. And we all want to see the best for you, both as a Wolf and in the days afterwards.

May you have an awesome birthday, Monica, and always know that you are valued.

Sincerely,

Wolf Nation

Basketball is lurking just around the corner.

Sure, there’s still a chunk of the fall sports season left to play, but, for some players, it’s never too early to plan ahead for hoops season.

Traveling photo man John Fisken was wandering around area gyms Tuesday (as he is known to do), and snapped these pics of CHS players taking advantage of an open gym to work on their games.

Bob Martin, at work and rest.

Bob Martin, at work and rest.

Bob Martin is the unsung backbone of Coupeville sports.

Whether coaching football and basketball, working with the high school boosters or the Boys and Girls Club, volunteering for Race the Reserve road crew work or simply making sure the lights stay on and the PA system works in the CHS gym during games, he’s everywhere at once.

In a small town, you need people like Bob, who are willing to put a lot of time and work in for very little pay, to make things work.

He may not always be in the spotlight, which he seems quite happy about, but he is indispensable.

Plus, he upholds a proud tradition honored by myself and Wolf football coach Tony Maggio, among others, of wearing shorts almost 24-7-365, rain and/or snow be danged.

Good man.

So, on this, his birthday, take a moment to give a hand to the quiet man of Coupeville sports, the guy who helps keep everything running while building for the next generation.

There is a landmark that sits in front of the CHS gym — a rock that is spray painted every time someone has something to get off their chest.

When it comes to Wolf sports, from the pee wees to the big kids, Bob Martin is the real-life embodiment of that rock.

Just don’t go spray painting him any time soon…

Briscoe, pre-painful injury.

Superstar down! Superstar down!!

A nasty-looking basketball injury has felled Coupeville High School three-sport athlete Tiffany Briscoe a mere week before the start of practice for a new volleyball season.

The injury happened Sunday during an open gym for basketball.

The sophomore got her foot caught and rolled it, with the offending leg making an audible popping noise.

Now operating under the watchful eye of mom Amy Briscoe, Tiffany is relying on ice, elevation and crutches and staying off the foot.

But, even with visible evidence of the injury, as her foot turns multiple colors, getting the tough-nosed teen to admit she’s in pain takes a bit of wrangling.

“Just keeping an eye on it for now,” Amy Briscoe said. “Yeah, it is nasty looking, but getting her to admit she’s hurt is impossible!”

It was High Noon in Internet City, and Amanda Fabrizi and her fans had the fastest trigger fingers Sunday.

Capping a furious final day of voting, in which all the rules were suspended and voters were allowed to stuff the ballot box for the final 12 hours, Coupeville Sports can now proudly announce the winner of our 2013-2014 Athlete Supreme, and it is Miss Fabrizi.

The recent Wolf grad, who was a standout volleyball player and a deadly scorer for the CHS girls’ basketball squad, came storming out of a second place tie Sunday morning and never looked back.

She roared past fellow Class of 2014 grad Jake Tumblin, who had led since the poll debuted Wednesday, eventually building a margin of more than 500 votes before the gridiron giant staged a late rally.

Fabrizi ultimately claimed a 237-vote win over Tumblin, while CHS junior football/baseball star Josh Bayne jumped from 10th to 3rd over the final hours of the poll.

Defending champ Nick Streubel was a non-factor the second time around, despite being selected as an All-State football player.

One suspects big sis Amanda, who carried him to voting victory last year, was too busy with her own college graduation to spend much time mashing computer keys.

The final vote totals:

Amanda Fabrizi – 1,365

Jake Tumblin – 1,128

Josh Bayne – 652

Makana Stone – 417

Hailey Hammer – 326

Breeanna Messner – 304

Ben Etzell – 131

Julia Myers – 127

Nick Streubel – 94

Aaron Curtin – 93

Wiley Hesselgrave – 92

Madeline Strasburg – 91
