There’s a new coach on the sidelines.

Adeline Joy Richter, the cutest baby to appear on Coupeville Sports today, arrived Nov. 2, uniting two sports empires.

Mom is Megan (Smith) Richter, three-time CHS Athlete of the Year turned Wolf varsity girls’ basketball coach.

Dad is Bennett Richter, state football champ (back in his Oak Harbor days) and the man who ended Coupeville football’s three-decade dry spell, bringing a gridiron league title back to Cow Town in 2022.

Grandpa is CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith, the first coach to lead a Wolf girls’ team to a state tourney win in ANY sport.

Grandma is Cherie Smith, the true power behind the throne, a hoops whisperer of great renown for both her husband and daughter.

And we haven’t even spoken of Uncles James and Ian Smith, legendary three-sport Wolf athletes who made South Whidbey sports teams cry more than once, which is just plain sweet.

Plus, Aunt Ashley Smith, who will be her fiercest protector, and countless cousins and other family members on both sides.

Why, Adeline, who popped into the world at 5 pounds, 15 ounces, and 19 inches long, might almost be called … “The Chosen One.”

Just don’t tell Grandpa I said that.

“How you doin’?”

“Mom, we can’t tell dad this, but … basketball is God’s chosen sport.”

“Yowza, is it just me or is there a draft in here?”

Hangin’ with the grandparentals.

“I’m snug as a bug in a rug.”

“I already signed a NIL deal? Sweet!”

“Hit the gas, Skippy! Big Ten hoops on Peacock in 10 minutes and rumors of a bottle waiting for me!”

The American Assassin filled up the stat sheet.

But while Coupeville grad Makana Stone was electric Sunday in Norway, her teammates struggled through a rough day en route to a loss.

Swamped early by undefeated Ullern, the early front-runner in the six-team Kvinneligaen, Ammerud fell 66-40.

The loss drops the Queens to 2-2 on the still-young season, while Ullern sits at 4-0.

Stone was the lone Ammerud player to hit double-digits in scoring, dropping in a team-high 15 points.

The former Wolf ace added nine rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocked shots.

It wasn’t enough to stop Ullern, however, as the league’s top team jumped out to a 17-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The powerhouse unit, which had three players score between 12 and 16 points, pushed the margin to 37-13 at the half, then 54-25 through three frames.

Ammerud has a chance to get back into the winning rhythm next Saturday, Nov. 11, when it faces off with Baerum (2-4), who it has already thumped once this year.

Stone, playing in her third season of professional basketball, tops the Queens with 70 points, 47 rebounds, 17 assists, nine steals, and five blocked shots.

If you listen carefully, you can already hear the squeak of shoes on hardwood.

The first day of practice for Coupeville High School basketball arrives Monday, Nov. 13, with games beginning about two weeks after that.

Today, as an appetizer, we have schedules for both the Wolf girls and boys programs.

With the caveat that schedules, for any sport, should always be written in pencil, and not pen — even if you plan on laminating them.

So onward, steadfast in the belief that winter weather or other assorted ills will not alter what CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith has put down on paper.

PS — ** means it’s a Northwest 2B/1B League clash.

PPS — If the opponent is a NWL rival, but there’s no **, the game is considered a non-league affair.

The dynamic duo is movin’ on up.

Coupeville grads turned coaches Craig Anderson and Jon Roberts will jump from the middle school to the high school this fall, replacing Hunter Smith as boys’ basketball JV coach.

The hires are 100% official when approved by the school board.

Smith departed after last season, capping a three-year run as JV coach.

Fire academy, a move off of Whidbey Island, and marriage to fellow CHS Athlete of the Year winner Payton Aparicio conspired to reduce Brad Sherman’s coaching staff.

The “new guys” are hardly new, since both have long-established roots both in Coupeville and with the Wolf basketball program.

Both Anderson and Roberts played high school hoops at CHS back in the day, and their sons Chase and Landon, respectively, currently suit up for the Wolves.

The duo coached successful middle school basketball teams, while Roberts is also the current high school JV baseball coach.

In their day jobs, Anderson is a Captain with the Oak Harbor Fire Department and Roberts owns Cascade Custom Homes and Design.

Pay the woman.

She’s back, and still can’t be stopped.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone, now suiting up for Ammerud in her third season of pro basketball, faced off with her former franchise Sunday and got the best of it.

Pouring in 20 points and snatching 13 rebounds — both game-high marks — the former Wolf ace powered her new squad to a 78-47 victory at Baerum.

The win lifts Ammerud to 2-1 on the season, heading into a two-week break.

The Queens return to action Nov. 5 with a match-up with Ullern, which is currently 2-0.

After opening her pro career in Britain, Stone moved to Norway and was a hardwood sensation for Baerum last season.

She helped that franchise go 20-7 and finish runners-up in the Kvinneligaen, averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds while playing in 26 games.

With Ammerud reviving its hoop dreams this season, Stone jumped squads and hasn’t missed a beat.

She added four assists and a steal Sunday to her stat line, as the Queens led from start to finish.

Ammerud jumped out to a 17-11 advantage after one quarter of play, stretched the margin to 29-19 by halftime, then blew things wide open after the break.

A 25-15 third-quarter surge sealed the win, with the Queens putting five different players into double-digit scoring by the end of the game.

Through her first three games in Ammerud, Stone has racked up 55 points, 38 rebounds, 12 assists, six steals, and three blocked shots.
