A final cheer, a final bow

It was a milestone evening.

Coupeville High School winter sports teams celebrated Senior Night festivities recently, with Wolf basketball players, cheerleaders, a wrestler, and a swimmer honored.

Along for the ride was photographer (and CHS grad) Julie Wheat, who delivers the pics seen above and below.

Sizzlin’ shots, big buckets

Two teams have wrapped, two play on.

Coupeville High School’s JV basketball teams reached the end of the road Friday night, while its varsity squads are playoff-bound this week.

As we head into those postseason rumbles, we pause to take a final group-wide look at individual scoring stats for all CHS players.

After this, the final totals for varsity players will be posted in the last game story for each team, whenever that arrives.

Regular season wraps, playoffs heat up

It’s a whole new world.

Having wrapped up regular season play this week, Northwest 2B/1B League varsity basketball teams are playoff bound.

Well, except for the Concrete boys and Darrington girls, who both went one-and-done in the postseason and have moved on to other pursuits.

The other 12 NWL teams are still alive, however, with the Concrete girls and Darrington boys deep into the 1B District 1 tourney, while the five 2B schools kick off the double-elimination District 1/2 royal rumble starting Feb. 12.

As playoff fever grips the land, this is the final edition of our weekly look at win/loss records — at least until spring sports get up and going.

As we exit, a look at where things sit through Feb. 8:

Basketball brackets bounce into view

It’s the ferry life for them.

The Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams start the double-elimination District 1/2 basketball tourney this coming Thursday, Feb. 12 and both Wolf squads will be on the road.

And right back where they just played.

Yes, both the CHS boys (7-11) and Wolf girls (5-13) are headed to Friday Harbor for a third game against their arch-rivals.

Scout Smith’s girls’ squad will hit the floor on a high, having beaten the Wolverines 52-42 in the regular season finale to split the season series.

Meanwhile, Brad Sherman’s hardcourt warriors hope that the third time is the charm, as they were swept by Friday Harbor during the regular season.

Wolf boys hit a bump in the road

Dang those midrange jumpers.

Despite dominating from behind the three-point arc and at the free throw line Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome a hail of old school field goals and lost a crucial one.

Falling 51-41 at Friday Harbor in the regular season finale, the Wolves slip to 4-6 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-11 overall and will likely open the playoffs on the road.

Coupeville won’t know its opening foe or the location until Saturday evening, when the bracket for the double-elimination District 1/2 tourney is released.

For now, Brad Sherman’s squad will have 24 or so hours to reflect on a game where it shot out to an early lead, before hitting some rough spots on offense down the stretch.

With Camden Glover splashing home a pair of three-balls in the early moments, CHS jumped out to a 17-12 lead at the first break and was still up 22-16 midway through the second frame.

But Friday Harbor made its move right before the halftime buzzer, hitting a field goal to snap a 27-27 tie.

From there the Wolverines pulled away in the second half, using a 13-7 run in the third to push the advantage to 42-34 and never giving back the lead over the game’s final 16 minutes.

While Coupeville ultimately lost on the scoreboard, it did win the three-ball battle 6-2, while hitting 11 of 18 free throws while Friday Harbor was just 1-4 at the charity stripe.

Chase Anderson popped for a game-high 17 points to pace the Wolves, with Camden Glover (14), Davin Houston (8), and Malachi Somes (2) also getting their names in the book.

Carson Grove, Liam Blas, Aiden O’Neill, and Riley Lawless also saw floor time for CHS.

Two Wolves hit personal milestones in the game with Houston cracking the 100-point club — he has 103 and counting — and Anderson moving from #9 to #8 on the Wolf boys career scoring chart.

The Coupeville senior has tallied 920 points and passes ’90s star Pete Petrov (917) with his performance on Friday Harbor.
