Now it’s a winning streak.

Surviving a rough fourth quarter Monday, the Leicester Riders held on to knock off the Newcastle Eagles 75-65 in Women’s British Basketball League action.

Sparked by the play of Coupeville grad Makana Stone, who banked in 12 points — including a pair of three-balls — the Riders improve to 13-7 in league play, 17-9 overall.

Leicester’s second win in a three-day span, it keeps the squad firmly in fourth place in the 13-team WBBL with the playoffs on the horizon.

Up next for the Riders is a back-to-back set of games April 15-16, with the first one against the high-flying Sevenoaks Suns, who sit at 18-1 in league play.

Monday’s game belonged to Leicester from opening tip through the end of the third quarter, before things got a little frantic at the end.

The Riders jumped out to a 20-9 lead after one quarter of play on their home court, then stretched the lead out to 46-21 by the half.

While the third quarter was much-more evenly played, Leicester was still up 67-43 heading into the game’s final 10 minutes.

Then things got a bit dicey, as Newcastle closed on a 22-8 tear, cutting its deficit all the way back to 10 points with a tick under two minutes to play.

From that point on, however, the two teams combined to go scoreless over the game’s final one minute and 59 seconds.

Stone added four rebounds, an assist, and a steal to go with her 12 points, while teammate Oceana Hamilton popped for 21 points as four Riders scored in double-digits.

Newcastle got most of its offensive punch from the duo of Marina Fernandez Pardo and Layne Murphy, who knocked down 21 and 20 points, respectively.

As she plays her first season of pro ball, Stone continues to acquit herself nicely.

The former Wolf has 220 points, 153 rebounds, 36 assists, 23 steals, and three blocked shots on the year.

It’s the taste of victory once again.

Sparked by their American assassin, the Leicester Riders snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday, shredding the Nottingham Wildcats 91-78.

With Coupeville grad Makana Stone knocking down 11 points and snagging six rebounds, the Riders solidified their hold on fourth place in the 13-team Women’s British Basketball League.

Leicester is 12-7 in league play, 16-9 overall, with another game coming up fast, as the Riders play Tuesday against the Newcastle Eagles.

The Riders entered play Saturday needing a bounce-back after a string of close losses, and they got it.

Stone and Co. zipped out to a 19-16 lead after one quarter of play, then stretched their advantage to 45-35 heading into the halftime break.

Nottingham proved pesky, however, slicing the lead back down to 64-61 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Riders responded in style, never relinquishing the lead and stretching it back out to double-digits by game’s end.

Stone added two assists and a blocked shot to the stat sheet, while teammates Oceana Hamilton and Hannah Robb led the scoring attack with 22 and 21 points, respectively.

Nottingham gunner Brooklyn Pannell topped all players with a game-high 33, but it wasn’t enough to save the Wildcats.

Stone, who is in her first season of pro ball after stellar collegiate runs at Whitman College and Loughborough University, passed a personal milestone Saturday.

Her third point of the game was her 200th as a professional, as she now sits with 208 points, 149 rebounds, 35 assists, 22 steals, and three blocks for her rookie campaign.

She gave them hope until the end.

Coupeville’s Makana Stone poured in 15 points Sunday, including hitting a three-ball with just six ticks to play, but it wasn’t quite enough to save the Leicester Riders.

Unable to hold on to an early lead, the Riders eventually fell 84-80 to the visiting Essex Rebels in Women’s British Basketball League action.

The loss drops Leicester to 11-7 in league play, 15-9 overall.

Stone and Co. put together their best offensive stretch of the game in the opening period, jumping out to a 30-25 lead by the first break.

Essex proved to be scrappy, however, retaking the lead at 49-46 heading to the halftime break, before clinging to a 63-62 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

The Rebels stretched the margin back out to as many as eight points in the final frame, before Leicester made a late run to keep things interesting.

Stone drilled the bottom out of the net to cut the deficit to 83-80, but Essex hit one final free throw and time ran out on the Riders.

Leicester spread its offense around, with Oceana Hamilton leading the way with a team-high 18 points.

Brooklyn Mcalear rattled the rims for 16, Stone added eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal to her 15 points, and Hannah Robb popped the nets for 13.

Essex was led by the one-two combo of Claire Paxton and Ashleigh Munns, who each finished with 20.

Stone, who is in her first season of pro hoops after stellar high school and college careers, has racked up 197 points, 143 rebounds, 33 assists, 22 steals, and two blocked shots on the season.

Leicester returns to action next Saturday, Apr. 9, when it faces off with the Nottingham Wildcats.

“They came with a fire and a passion that I have been waiting to see this season.”

For first-year Coupeville Middle School girls basketball coaches Kassie O’Neil and Kristina Forbes, this has been a season of celebrating each milestone, as largely inexperienced players learn the game on the fly.

Instead of wins and losses, the Wolves have measured their success on lessons learned, skills picked up, and confidence built.

Which is why O’Neil exited the CMS gym Tuesday after game #7 in a eight-game season with a visible sense of pride.

“This was our best game, by far,” she said. “The girls walked away super happy and ready to play in the offseason. It was the perfect last home game.”

Coupeville closes the campaign with a road trip to Langley Thursday, and the program has taken a major leap forward since opening day.

How Tuesday played out:

Varsity:

Coupeville upped its point total in each quarter, and while the Wolves fell 37-19, the hot shooting of Haylee Armstrong and the team’s defense were big standouts.

“We just learned zone (defense) this week and you couldn’t even tell,” O’Neil said. “It looked like they had been playing zone all season.

“I honestly wish we had been, because they KILLED it.”

Armstrong rattled the rims for a season-high 11 points, including hitting a three-ball which further cements her status as a fast-rising, sweet-shooting star.

Haylee came out shooting amazing; she kept swishing shot after shot,” said O’Neil, who nailed her fair share of big shots during her own Coupeville hoops days.

“Our guards worked hard on driving with a purpose and dishing to the posts or wings to shoot,” she added.

“Our big thing has been “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” so today, whether they made them or not, I told the girls I would be proud of them just for taking the shot.

“And they did just that.”

Kierra Thayer slapped home six points in support of Armstrong, with Rhylin Price and Brynn Parker each rippling the net on a free throw.

Liza Zustiak, Tenley Stuurmans, Capri Anter, Ava Lucero, Marin Winger, Lexis Drake, and Avery Williams-Buchanan also saw floor time, with Winger getting a nice shout out from O’Neil for having “hustle every time she hit the court — executing our defense perfectly and being aggressive on offense constantly.”

The Wolf hoops guru spread love to everyone on the roster.

“The girls went out and weren’t afraid,” she said. “When the season is over, these are the games I hope they’ll walk away holding onto, pushing them into further basketball careers.

“Their excitement and pride was palpable in the locker room after the game,” O’Neil added. “Today was a day that reminded me why I love this game so much.

“Regardless of the score, we walked away knowing we won that game in all of the ways that matter.”

JV:

Facing a physical team, the young Wolves held up well, playing Sultan virtually even in the second half during a 25-11 loss.

Forbes and her players achieved one goal — holding the Turks to 25 or less points — while narrowly missing out on setting a season-high with their own scoring efforts.

Most importantly, the Wolves set out to play better against Sultan than they did earlier in the season, a mission you can mark as accomplished.

“The girls stayed strong throughout this game,” Forbes said. “They got beat up pretty good!”

Taylor Marrs sparked the rough-and-ready Wolf attack, using every one of her allotted fouls while clamping down on the Turk shooters.

“We had our first foul-out of the season,” Forbes said with pride. “When you think of defense, that’s Taylor all the way. She has definitely come a long way.

“I am so proud of these girls and the confidence they are starting to show on the court!”

Melanie Wolfe topped the Coupeville scorers, dropping in all five of her points in the fourth quarter, while Chelsi Stevens, Adeline Maynes, and Rhylin Price each chipped in with a bucket.

It was the first points of the season for the hard-working Stevens, who becomes the 15th CMS player to score.

Rosie Lay, Willow Leedy-Bonifas, Marrs, Laken Simpson, Elyse White, Ava Carpenter, Inara Maund, and Lexis Drake also saw floor time for the Wolves.

The art of the game:

Earlier this season, while I was covering a CMS hoops game in person, Inara Maund was busy working the camera, shooting the action for her coaches.

During time-outs she showed me some of her artwork and I later wrote about how I wanted to showcase some of her creations here on Coupeville Sports.

And what do you know, it’s happening!

Chayse Van Velkinburgh didn’t spend too much time sitting on the couch this weekend.

The Coupeville Elementary School fifth grader delivered strong performances in two sports while bouncing between different towns.

When he was in Redmond, Van Velkinburgh played in a state soccer cup game, bashing several shots on goal while leading the rampage on offense.

Take him off the pitch, and rush him back to Mount Vernon, and he played in four basketball games at the Tulip Days Tournament.

Van Velkinburgh poured in 55 points, including 17 against Lummi Island in the day’s final matchup, helping spark his team to the 5th grade title.

Most of his team’s games were actually against 6th grade squads, as they played up after several 5th grade teams dropped out of the tourney.
