Hardwood heroes prep for opening tip

Interest in basketball is booming.

With 27 players currently on the roster, Coupeville Middle School plans to play three boys hoops games each time out this season, instead of the original two.

Northshore Christian Academy is the lone Cascade League School which only goes two teams deep, and that matchup is a road one, meaning Wolf fans can brace for long nights when their guys are playing at home.

The season kicks off Thursday, November 17 with a trip to Langley, followed by three straight home clashes against Lakewood, Sultan, and King’s.

Coupeville’s boys, under the guidance of coaches Jon Roberts and Craig Anderson, play an eight-game schedule.

Things wrap up Dec. 14, with the CMS girls taking control of the court in the new year.

Like mother, like son

Mitchell is joined on the NWMS bench by former Coupeville High School girls’ soccer coach Troy Cowan (far left).

The coaching life continues.

Coupeville High School grad Dante Mitchell, son of legendary hoops guru Avis Mitchell, is back on the bench at North Whidbey Middle School.

It’s the second season at NWMS for Dante, who both played and coached in Coupeville.

On the hardwood, he threw down buckets alongside twin brother DeAndre, before later putting in time as a basketball coach for Coupeville Middle School.

Middle school hoops on horizon

Hark! The squeaking of shoes on hardwood floors approaches.

God’s chosen sport — basketball — kicks off Oct. 31 with the first day of practice for the Coupeville Middle School boys hoops program.

High school teams begin in mid-November, while the CMS girls claim the court early in the new year.

But first up are the middle school boys, who will be led by returning coaches Jon Roberts and Craig Anderson.

Once they have enough practices under their belts, the Wolves kick off an eight-game season which runs from mid-Nov. to mid-Dec.

Wolves enjoy summer hoop dreams

Travel as a pack, play as a pack.

Coupeville High School boys basketball coaches brought 21 players to Eastern Washington this past week, where the Wolves participated in a team camp at Gonzaga University.

The trip comes on the heels of CHS hoops stars rumbling to a title in the Skagit County Parks and Rec Summer League, where Coupeville finished 7-1.

Ready to rumble in Eastern Washington.

With the Wolf program coming off a season in which the varsity won league and district titles before advancing to the state tourney, the continued growth points to more big things on the horizon.

“(We had an) amazing experience (at Gonzaga),” said Coupeville head coach Brad Sherman.

“Saw us grow a lot as a team and we had a ton of fun together.”

Hoops stars singe summer nets

The off-season is off to a great start.

Coming off the program’s best season in decades, Coupeville High School boys basketball players are keeping the good times rolling.

Even without their now-departed pack of seniors, the Wolves stormed through the Skagit County Parks and Rec Summer League, finishing 7-1 to claim top honors.

CHS coach Brad Sherman had a large group of players to draw on, using a mix of varsity and JV players, plus some incoming freshmen.

Most of those same players are currently camped out at Gonzaga University, where the Wolves are participating in a summer camp.
