The coaching life continues.

Coupeville High School grad Dante Mitchell, son of legendary hoops guru Avis Mitchell, is back on the bench at North Whidbey Middle School.

It’s the second season at NWMS for Dante, who both played and coached in Coupeville.

On the hardwood, he threw down buckets alongside twin brother DeAndre, before later putting in time as a basketball coach for Coupeville Middle School.

The photos above come from North Whidbey’s opener against Stanwood.

Keeping an eye on the action.

Different town, same game.

Coupeville High School grad Dante Mitchell is now working in Oak Harbor, coaching basketball at North Whidbey Middle School.

That follows on the heels of his time as a Wolf, where he was both a player, and later, a coach, continuing the work of mom (and hoops guru) Avis.

As Dante worked the sidelines Monday in a season-opening matchup against Mt. Baker Middle School, wanderin’ photographer John Fisken was on hand to document the moment.

Dante Mitchell is back in the game.

The former Coupeville High School hoops star, who went on to coach middle school boys basketball at CMS, is returning to the sidelines this year, but in a different town.

Mitchell will be working for North Whidbey Middle School.

Even though he’s swapped out his Coupeville red and black for Oak Harbor gold and purple, a lot of his heart still belongs in Cow Town.

“I’m not going to forget about the kids I coached in Coupeville!,” he said with a chuckle.

A 2016 Coupeville grad, Mitchell played basketball alongside twin brother DeAndre, with both following in the big footsteps of older brother Anthony Bergeron.

The trio got their basketball skills from mom Avis Mitchell, a highly-respected youth hoops coach in her own right.

The Wolf has become a Cougar.

Former Coupeville High School star Joel Walstad, a three-sport athlete who holds the single-season school record for TD passes, is back in the gym, but not as a player.

The 2015 CHS grad is working as an assistant boys basketball coach at North Whidbey Middle School.

He can also be found at the Living Word Foursquare Church in Oak Harbor, where he’s Middle School Director.

During his days in Coupeville, Walstad played football, basketball and soccer, and his exploits earned him induction into the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame.

He was a talented goalkeeper on the pitch, and a hard-driving ball-hawk on the hardwood, but his biggest moments came on the gridiron.

During his senior season in 2014, Walstad threw for 1,675 yards and 18 touchdowns (he also ran for four scores), guiding Coupeville to its best record in a decade.

His best performance came in the biggest game of the season, as he completed 20 of 29 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns as the Wolves drilled arch-rival South Whidbey.
