Boot to the future!!

"I got moves like Ronaldo, son!!"

"Snacks?!?! Here, you have the ball! I gotta get over there before they give out all the orange slices and I get stuck with that one grapefruit they slipped in and hoped no one noticed..."

The brother also rises.

Coupeville High School senior Dalton Martin may be getting a large chunk of the spotlight right now, what with being a state meet-approved track star, but lil’ brother Logan is charging hard in a bid to unseat the king.

Logan and other BU12 booters were the focus Saturday as travelin’ photo man John Fisken clicked away, and the photos above capture the possible future of Wolf soccer.

Aram Leyva can’t be stopped by mere mortals!!

Put them out of their misery fast.

That’s what Aram Leyva and his teammates on the North Whidbey Deception FC-01 boys’ soccer squad wanted to do Saturday.

Playing a team that was greatly over-matched, the Deception, fueled by their Coupeville mercenaries, romped to a 5-0 win in a game that could have had twice as big a margin.

Leyva took care of a huge chunk of the scoring responsibilities, raining down a hat trick, then tossed in an assist to go with his three goals.

Fellow Wolves Matthew Kelley and Sage Downes banged home the team’s other two goals, while Kelley also collected an assist.

Wolf booters save the day!!

A few more grey hairs for the coach, but a win to save the day.

Despite squandering a three-goal lead, the North Whidbey Deception FC-01 boys’ soccer squad escaped with a thrilling 4-3 win over its Crossfire arch-rivals Saturday, thanks largely to its Coupeville mercenaries.

Matthew Kelley poked home the winning goal, off of an assist from fellow Wolf Aram Leyva, to pull out the victory.

With time running down, Leyva forced an attack on the goal, then slid the ball to Kelley, who drew the net-minder out.

Once he had the Crossfire goalie in no man’s land, Kelley popped the ball over his head for the eventual winning score.

The comeback was necessitated after the Crossfire, who had tied the Deception in two previous meetings, ripped off three straight goals to climb back into the game.

Whidbey had jumped out to a large lead off of a penalty kick, a goal set up by Kelley and a booming score from 20-yards out off of Leyva’s toe.

The win sent the Deception into sole possession of first place in their league.

Back where he belongs!!

The town wasn’t the same without him.

A family move took Uriel Liquidano away from Coupeville High School for a bit last year and things almost fell all to pieces.

So, it’s a good thing he came back.

Once Oscar’s lil’ bro was back on the soccer pitch last spring, things went back to normal. To the way they were supposed to be.

Uriel is one of those indispensable guys, the glue that helps hold things together.

Calm and cool, especially under pressure, he excels on every field, whether it be the soccer pitch, the football gridiron or the basketball court.

He’s also at the forefront of school spirit, joining up with classmates Aiden Crimmins, Jonathan Thurston and Jimmy Myers to uphold the fine tradition of dressing up in costumes for volleyball matches.

As Uriel celebrates a birthday today, we just want to send him best wishes and let him know how much we enjoy having him back in these parts.

It wasn’t the same without you, man.

Play the best to be the best.

Of course, if you play the best as you’re working your way up, it’s quite likely you take some licks along the way.

Such was the case last weekend for the North Whidbey Islanders FC-01 boys’ soccer squad.

The Islanders, who claim several Coupeville players on their roster, faced off with four Division 1 squads and emerged from tournament play with a 0-3-1 record.

Whidbey was a Division 3 team last year, and was also playing down five starters.

Even in the losses, the Islanders got strong play from their Wolf gunslingers.

Matthew Kelley collected two goals and two assists during the tourney, while Aram Leyva and Sage Downes each notched a goal.

Jake Mitten and Samuel Wynn sparkled on defense for Whidbey, while newcomer Jean Lund-Olsen made a stellar debut as a defender.

The Islanders begin league play Sept. 5.
