Earlier this season, Cameron Boyd broke a tooth during a tussle for a soccer ball.

Friday night, the Coupeville High School senior shattered something else, but was probably a lot happier about it. Scoring his first varsity goal, he helped carry the Wolves to a 1-0 win at Sultan.

The victory broke a five-game winless streak for Coupeville, gave the Wolves a season sweep of the Turks and improved their record to 5-7-1 overall, 4-7 in Cascade Conference play.

It wasn’t enough to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, however.

With wins of their own Friday, South Whidbey (7-2-2 in league) and King’s (7-3-1) clinched the two 1A postseason berths available from the 1A/2A league.

Coupeville has three games remaining, two at home, but the best they could finish in league play is 7-7 and even if King’s were to lose its final three, they would edge out the Wolves by a half game.

Still, even without a trip to the playoffs, this has been a season of improvement for CHS, which went 3-14 a season ago and had little scoring pop.

While big scorers Abraham Leyva, Zane Bundy and Sean Donley were scoreless Friday, Boyd’s goal was all Wolf goaltender Joel Walstad and his defense needed.

All the glory came early.

On a night when the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad suffered a rare shutout at the varsity level, junior forward Brandon Bartley made sure the same wouldn’t happen in the JV game.

Bartley’s goal, coming off of a penalty kick, combined with a strong Wolf defense headed up by goaltender Connor McCormick, lifted CHS to a thrilling 1-0 victory over visiting Lakewood Tuesday.

“A well-earned victory,” said Coupeville varsity coach Kyle Nelson.

His squad had a bit more trouble scoring, despite strong play, and fell 3-0 in the night’s second game.

“Great effort from the boys last night, evenly played game,” Nelson said. ” The ball was deflected for all of their scores, a little bit of luck.”

The loss dropped the Wolf varsity to 4-7-1 overall, 3-7 in Cascade Conference play.

With four games to play, Coupeville will essentially need a miracle to qualify for the playoffs.

The Wolves, who have beaten last year’s record, trail South Whidbey (6-2-2 in league) and King’s (6-3-1) in the race for the two 1A playoff berths from the 1A/2A league.

Betrayed by the ferry!

Forced to depart Friday Harbor or spend the night there, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad had to forgo playing overtime and accept a 3-3 draw Monday night.

The tie, coming against a non-conference foe they pushed around in a season-opening win, left the Wolves at 4-6-1, winless in their last four matches.

The stalemate was a bright spot for Friday Harbor, which improved to 0-11-1.

CHS coach Kyle Nelson preferred to look on the bright side of things afterwards.

“It was a fairly even match; Friday Harbor was improved from our first game,” he said. “Good to get a positive result after our difficult week last week.”

Wolf sophomore Abraham Leyva continued his assault on the net, punching in his eighth and ninth goals of the season, while senior Sean Donley hit on his third score.

Donley and sophomore Zane Bundy notched assists.

Friday Harbor was paced by two goals from Daniel Porter and one from Sam Paul-Barrette.

Time to clear out some photos.

They’re starting to pile up a bit, so let’s toss out six random pics for a lazy Easter afternoon. They come courtesy travelin’ photo man John Fisken and cover four of Coupeville High School’s six spring sports teams.

I’m short on girls’ tennis and golf pics right now, so that’s the only reason they’re not represented here.

Head out to a home game this coming week.

Sage Downes (Pat Kelley photo)

Sage Downes could even score while he’s kneeling … if he wanted to. (Pat Kelley photo)

There is no way on Earth to stop Sage Downes.

When the goal-scoring machine gets rollin’, the only answer is to pray he’s merciful and lets you escape back to the sideline with a bit of dignity left.

Which he kinda, sorta, didn’t do Saturday, raining down an astonishing eight goals in two games, as Central Whidbey’s Ciao boys’ soccer squads demolished Oak Harbor.

Downes hit for three scores in the opener, as Ciao Orange rolled to a 9-3 win, then topped himself with a five-goal barrage in the second game. Ciao Black won that contest 8-4.

He wasn’t the only one with a hot toe, as eight of the 16 players in a Ciao uniform found the back of the net.

Aram Leyva, following in the footsteps of older brother Abraham, who leads Coupeville High School’s boys’ soccer squad in goals, punched in three.

Six others (Alex Jimenez, Eli Kastner, Matt Kelley, Michael Laska, Jean Lund-Olsen and James Wood) netted a goal apiece.

Ciao is 3-0 on the season and returns to action Saturday, April 26 at Oak Harbor’s U12 Field 1.
