The Wolves invaded the eye of the storm Saturday morning.

Traveling to University Place, the Coupeville Middle School cross country squad participated in the massive 28th annual John Payne Invitational.

The event drew entries from 97 high schools, 21 middle schools, and 13 running clubs.

CMS competed in the 1.5-mile youth race, with the Wolf boys finishing 3rd in the team standings, and girls’ 9th.

Coupeville claimed 5th in the overall team standings.

It was a go-go day from start to finish, said CMS coach Amber Wyman.

“That race was fast and furious! We got there shortly before 9:30, got settled, grabbed bibs, headed straight to the start and they headed out!”

The calm before the storm.

Having survived the event, the Wolves have two meets left on their schedule.

The middle school harriers will join their CHS counterparts next Saturday, Oct. 12 at the 4th annual Mountain Loop Invitational in Granite Falls.

After that, CMS closes the campaign with a trek to South Whidbey Wednesday, Oct. 16 for the Cascade League Championships.

The breeze just made them run faster.

Staying one step ahead of the cool air coming off the water at Fort Casey State Park Thursday, Coupeville Middle School cross country runners held up well in their lone home meet of the season.

The Wolves welcomed six other Cascade League schools to Whidbey, then presented them with an enticing 1.7-mile course.

South Whidbey claimed the girls’ team title, while King’s captured the boys’ crown. Coupeville finished third in both competitions.

Aleya Lewis of Lakewood and Ash Kline of South Whidbey earned individual honors, with the Wolves placing Henry Purdue and Cyrus Sparacio in the top 10.

CMS coach Amber Wyman sent 26 runners to the line Thursday and came away impressed with her young athletes.

“It was a beautiful day, and the runners really pushed hard!” she said.

“We had some tough competition, but I am so proud of all of my runners for how hard they work at practice and all the effort they give.

“It is really paying off!”

The Wolves get right back at it this Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to University Place to take part in the 28th annual John Payne Cross Country Invitational.

They came, they ran, they heard the click of cameras.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad hosted its lone home meet of the season Wednesday at Fort Casey State Park, and photographers were hiding in every bush along the trail.

The pics above and below come to us from School Board Prez Morgan White, who was out and about with her camera enjoying the balmy early-October weather.

These are the days Elizabeth Bitting loves.

The Coupeville High School cross country coach was front and center at Fort Casey State Park Wednesday, as the Wolves hosted their lone home meet of the season.

And Bitting was stoked.

“It was a beautiful day!” she said. “So many spectators, so many cow bells ringing, a lot of hoarse voices, PR’s galore!”

Craig Pedlar, who coached CHS cross country in the ’70s, was the official starter, and seemingly the whole community came out in force to support the harriers.

“We had so many wonderful volunteers!” Bitting said.

“Thank you to all who came out on this glorious day and cheered on ALL THE runners! I LOVE THAT!”

Parents, school admins and teachers, middle school runners and the CHS cheerleaders were on hand to help keep things hopping.

“Today was seriously our biggest turnout yet!” Bitting said. “We had some big names out there! So many family members and friends.

“We definitely were feeling the love today!”

On the 5000-meter course, the Wolves won the girls’ team title, with their 42 points edging out Friday Harbor (46) and Mount Vernon Christian (47).

The CHS boys (32) claimed second, trailing just perpetual state power MVC (23), with Hurricanes Evangeline Fikkert and Isaac Betz earning individual crowns.

Coupeville placed four boys and three girls in the top 10, with junior Aleera Kent and sophomore Kenneth Jacobsen leading the way with fourth-place finishes.

The Wolves get back at it a week from today, Oct. 9, when they travel to Friday Harbor for another league meet.

Speedy, on or off Whidbey Island.

Coupeville High School cross country runners invaded the heart of Seattle Saturday and put together a stellar showing.

Competing at the 17th annual King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run, the Wolves earned second place in both the boys’ and girls’ team standings.

Traversing “three hilly miles of trails and some track, with no concrete” according to the brochure, Coupeville put four runners in the top 10.

Senior Landon Roberts was the fastest Wolf on the day, claiming seventh place in his race.

Coming off their big city jaunt, the CHS harriers return home this coming week.

The Wolves will host their lone home meet of the season Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Fort Casey State Park.
