The new boss of former South Whidbey football coach Chris Tormey.

South Whidbey High School’s loss is Montreal’s gain.

After just one season at the helm of the Falcon football program, Chris Tormey resigned to take a job in the Canadian Football League.

Tormey, who went 2-8 in his one season in Langley, losing 35-28 to Coupeville, has been a longtime college coach, but this is his first professional job.

He became the linebackers coach for the Montreal Alouettes in late Jan.

The Alouettes are one of the CFL’s premier teams, having won seven Grey Cups, with the last title coming in 2010.

During his college gridiron coaching days, Tormey went 49-54 with stints at Idaho and Nevada. He was a longtime assistant at the University of Washington, putting in 16 years with the Huskies.

The South Whidbey change is the second to hit Whidbey Island this year, with Brett Smedley having replaced Tony Maggio in Coupeville.

Maggio put in three years as the helm of the Wolves, beating South Whidbey twice and leaving The Bucket in possession of CHS when he departed to spend more time focusing on work and family.

It’s also a chance to help his beautiful five-year-old daughter. Money raised will help pay for Adam’s funeral expenses and go towards a college fund for Sophia.

Tickets are $20 and can be bought at the door or in advance at Taz’s Auto Service on Goldie Road.

Children five and under will be admitted free.

During the event, raffle drawings will be held for an assortment of baskets, as well.

If you can’t attend, but would like to donate, there are several ways.

Colin Belliveau: The Dude abides. (John Fisken photos)

Colin Belliveau: Man of many faces. (John Fisken photos)

Colin Belliveau just seems like a good dude.

A friendly, easy-going guy, he fit right in after moving to Cow Town from Republic High School in Eastern Washington during his junior year.

Since becoming a Wolf, he’s tried his hand at football (transitioning from the 8-man game to the 11-man game) and soccer, and is a frequent presence at CHS events, loudly and proudly rooting for his classmates.

Belliveau also holds a place of distinction for the fact he’s VERY animated in the photos he pops up in. Take a look at the collage above and you’ll see what I mean.

That alone makes him a huge favorite here at Coupeville Sports headquarters.

After the basketball photo ran, he walked past me at a game, grinned broadly and said “Man, that camera knows just when to go off with me.”

Some guys try to be cool. Others just are.

Colin, who celebrates a birthday today, is obviously one of the latter kind.

So, a quick shout-out to our version of The Dude in “The Big Lebowski.

Like Jeff Bridges, Belliveau abides and makes it all look easy-peasy.

I know Republic misses him, but he’s a part of Wolf Nation now, and we’re very happy we got the chance to meet him.

Josh Bayne (John Fisken photo)

Josh Bayne (John Fisken photo)

Pack up the family van. It’s time for a road trip.

The place to be is Earl Barden Stadium at East Valley High School in Yakima June 20, when Coupeville High School’s standout running back, Josh Bayne, will compete in the All-State game.

Bayne, who will have graduated from CHS at that point (after possibly winning a state title in baseball), was tabbed as one of the best football players in 2A, 1A and 2B.

He’s the first Wolf to get the honor since Mike Bagby in 2006.

There was little doubt Bayne deserved the nod, after throwing down an MVP season in Coupeville’s debut in the Olympic League and being selected as an All-State player both as a running back and linebacker.

He led all 1A players in rushing yards, touchdowns and interceptions, proving himself a terror both ways.

Bayne’s pertinent stats:

Passing: 1 of 1 for 43 yards. So, perfection.

Rushing: 143 carries for 1,528 yards. #1 in 1A.

Receiving: 31 catches for 460 yards. #12 in 1A.

Kickoff/punt returns: 11 returns for 224 yards, after which teams refused to kick his way for most of the season.

Total yards: 2,031. #4 in 1A.

All-Purpose yards: 2,281.

Touchdowns: 25. #1 in 1A. 15 rushing, 10 receiving. Twice scored six in a game this year.

Tackles: 91. 77 solo, 14 assists. #3 in 1A.

Sacks: 2 (while playing in the defensive backfield).

Interceptions: 6. Tied for #1 in 1A.

Fumble recoveries: 4.

Yakima, we have an incoming missile and it’s gonna hurt when he hits.

William Nelson

William Nelson

The young guns get a little older today.

A day after his New England Patriots won their fourth Super Bowl title, Wolf football player Tyler Cermak shares a birthday with netter William Nelson.

Two of the more promising young athletes to walk the hallways at Coupeville High School, they have both shone during the start of their days in red and black.

Cermak has fought through health issues to remain a key part of the Wolf football program. Whether on the field or off, he remains as devoted to the gridiron squad as anyone on it.

Plus, he’s the one who first tipped me to the news of Brett Smedley being hired as the new Wolf head coach, allowing me to scoop the Canadian papers.

Well played, Mr. Cermak.

Nelson, younger brother of Wolf netter/booter Loren Nelson, made an immediate impact for the Wolf tennis squad during his first days as a high school student.

Teaming with fellow frosh Joey Lippon, Nelson advanced to the postseason and the duo gave fans a view of the future of Wolf tennis. Spoiler: it’s a bright one.

Since it’s a Monday, they’re back at school (I assume. Cermak may be still celebrating.) and probably are limited on time. So, I’ll make this quick.

Happy birthday, gentlemen. May both of you continue to play out what looks like a bright athletic future.
