Wolf spikers host Dig Pink Night Oct. 5

A great team playing for a great cause.

When the Coupeville High School volleyball squads return to action Tuesday, Oct. 5, the Wolves will be playing for more than just themselves.

Coupeville’s opponent will be Concrete, with JV set to tip at 5:00 PM, varsity at 6:30.

But the home games are also tagged as Dig Pink Night, with the Wolves and Lions raising funds to fight breast cancer.

All proceeds go to pay for mammography’s through WhidbeyHealth.

If you’re there in person, you’ll be able to participate in a raffle and win prizes.

But, if you can’t make it and want to still help, donations can be made by popping over here, and choosing “Mammography-Dig Pink” as the Fund Designation:

Tour de Whidbey rides to success

They pedaled right to paydirt.

The 2021 edition of the Tour de Whidbey raised $71,000, which will be used for the purchase of equipment for the WhidbeyHealth Medical Center and Clinics.

The event drew 500+ bicyclists — a 40% increase from previous years — and the money raised was almost double of the total from 2019.

Covid forced the Tour de Whidbey to be cancelled in 2020.

Event organizers offered up a wide range of rides, from a 10-mile family course, which attracted 65 riders, to the 162-mile “power ride.”

The most daunting of all the rides still managed to draw in 42 bicyclists, who “pushed themselves to the max.”

Money raised will be used to purchase equipment such as Halo sanitizing systems, sterilization equipment, personal protective equipment, and AEDs.

Current plans call for the Tour de Whidbey to return in 2022, with August 20 set for the event.

Coupeville athletes raise $16,000 for students

Two wheels and a license to thrill.

They hit the road for a good cause.

A pack of local athletes ran and biked Sunday, raising money for the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools.

Known this year as the Coupeville Run, Ride, and Reunite Fundraiser, the event is in its fifth go-round.

Participants and contributors raised close to $16,000 this year, which will go to help local students.

“The community was amazing,” said event organizer James Steller. “And they turned out in force to make a memorable day in participation.

“This is the most beautiful town in the world,” he added. “Thank you all so much for the support and hope to see you next year!”

Whidbey rallies for firefighter’s family

Whidbey Island is rallying to support the family of a firefighter who passed away suddenly.

Tyler Rico, a lieutenant with North Whidbey Fire and Rescue, was a husband and father of six.

He had served with NWFR seven years, while also doing time as a firefighter with Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

Friends of the family have set up a meal train and GoFundMe account to help Rico’s wife and children.

Duffers prep for tribute tourney

Registration is open for the 5th annual Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tourney, which honors a Coupeville Middle School student who passed away in 2017 just shy of his 13th birthday, is put on by the Penn Cove Brewing Company.

Bennett, a basketball player and member of Coupeville’s Class of 2022, waged a remarkable battle against autoimmune encephalitis, in which the immune system attacks the brain.

Even while undergoing frequent radiation treatments in an attempt to slow the growth of inoperable tumors on his brain stem, his smile never wavered.

Former hoops teammate Hawthorne Wolfe has worn Bennett’s name on his basketball shoes as he has pursued their mutual hardwood dream, and the CHS boys basketball program left a seat open in his honor during a cancer fundraiser.

Penn Cove Brewing owners Mitch and Marc Aparicio have used the golf tourney to pay tribute to their fellow Coupeville native, while raising money for several charities.

Even with the pandemic affecting things in 2020, the tourney pulled in a record 83 players, with money raised being split between the WhidbeyHealth Foundation and the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools.

This year’s tourney is set for September 25th, with a 1:00 PM shotgun start at the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor.

Proceeds from the 2021 event will go to support patients and families through WhidbeyHealth’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Services, and to provide scholarships to Bennett’s graduating class.
