Explore the Island, support Coupeville schools

“Circumnavigate Whidbey” is back, but with a twist.

An annual fundraiser for the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools, it’s headed into its third go-round, with the hope of attracting the most participants yet.

The first two years featured creator James Steller (and later a few friends) circling Whidbey by means of running, bicycling, and swimming.

This time out, they’re offering local athletes a chance to participate in two non-competitive “half-Ironman triathlons,” while tracing the 160-mile perimeter of Whidbey Island.

The event goes down Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 1).

The first day, athletes launch from Mickey Clark Field (behind Coupeville Elementary School), head South, then work their way back to Coupeville.

Day two will start in the same place, but everyone will head North.

Each day will consist of 13 miles running (split into several legs), a mile swim, and the rest taken up by biking.

Participants will stick together on the journey, regardless of pace.

The event wraps with a community potluck at the end of the second day.

Those who want to help support the Foundation, but not hit the roads and waters, can donate to the cause, as the poster at the top of this article indicates.

The Foundation, which was started in 1977, provides scholarships to students and grants to teachers, helping keep Coupeville education humming along.

Spike car dirt, spread sweet cash

Banish the dirt, and help a good cause.

The Coupeville High School volleyball team is back at it Saturday, June 22, running a charity car wash to raise money for all things spiker-related.

The soap bubbles fly from 10-2:30 at Ebey Academy, which is located at 140 SE Terry Road, across from the high school and just down from Prairie Center Red Apple Market.

Your donations will benefit one of the most successful sports programs at CHS.

The Wolves are coming off a season in which they finished 11-5, second in the North Sound Conference behind just King’s, which finished 3rd at the 1A state tourney.

Before that, Coupeville won back-to-back Olympic League titles and went to state in 2017.

Come together, for dance and community

You can dance the afternoon away, and also support a good cause.

Former Coupeville High School baseball star Ben Etzell is back on the Island and is throwing a “Down 2 Boogie” event next Sunday, June 16.

The event runs from 2:30-5:30 at the Coupeville Rec Hall, and is free to the public.

It will also double as the kickoff to Lucas Etzell’s campaign for Mr. South Whidbey.

Lucas is Ben’s younger brother and one of four children in the family to graduate from Coupeville High School.

“I created the event in celebration of everyone’s unique abilities,” Ben Etzell said.

“Inspired by my brother Lucas, his experience with Down Syndrome, and the impact he’s had on others, my goal is to bring together communities for an afternoon of music, movement, and true connection.”

There will be a donation station at the event, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of Friends Medical Support Fund.

Every dollar donated also counts as a vote for Lucas as he competes for Mr. South Whidbey, which awards its title in October.

Take your shot, help food bank

Local shooters can help support Coupeville’s Gifts from the Heart Food Bank.

Hit the target and help others.

The Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Association Charity Benefit Match, which is open to the public, goes down from 9 AM-1 PM Saturday, April 20.

All proceeds from the shooting match, which features six different events, will go to Coupeville’s Gifts from the Heart Food Bank.

Participants are also encouraged to bring dry and canned food donations, which will help a food bank currently in its 17th year of operation in Central Whidbey.

And, while you’re helping feed others, if you’re a crack shot you can also walk away with a gift for yourself.

The top finishers in each event will claim an Easter ham at the awards presentation, with a limit of one ham per shooter.

Cost to enter is $1.50 per event, or you can shoot in four events after coughing up a crisp fiver.

Shooters 15 and under will compete in the junior class, while everyone else vies in the adult class.

All pistol and revolver shooting is offhand, one or two hands, with open sights for pistols and 22 rifle.

The six events:

Briquettes from 10 yards — Six briquettes, break the most without hitting the cardboard tube. Any pistol/revolver using iron sights, 22lr only.

Poker hand from 15 yards — Five shots, best hand wins. Any pistol/revolver using iron sights, 22lr only.

Shotgun pig shoot from 25 yards — Two shots, most pellets in the white center wins. Bring your shotgun and ammo.

Dart shoot from 10 yards — Six shots, highest score wins. Any pistol/revolver using iron sights, 22lr only.

Rifle shoot from 50 yards — Six shots at bulls-eye target, 22 rim-fire rifle, iron sights. Club rifles only; adults off hand and juniors bench rest

Trap shoot — Best of 10; bring your shotgun and shells.

Shooters are encouraged to bring their own pistols/revolvers (no Magnums or hot load), shotguns and ammunition, but there will be pistols, rifles, and ammo provided by the club for those in need.

The Sportsmen’s Association is located at 397 West Safari Street, which is just south of Coupeville near the corner of Highway 20 and Morris Rd.

There will be signs posted on the day of the event.

Step up for Coach Carr and his family

Coupeville High School coaches have banded together to support the family of Wolf head football coach Marcus Carr, and we can all help.

Carr’s wife, Deborah, was in a bad car accident coming home from work Mar. 23, and has had to have extensive surgeries.

While she is recovering from her injuries, others are stepping up to provide meals for the family of six.

CHS cheer coach BreAnna Boon, using the Meal Train web site, has set up an easy way for people to sign up to provide meals, or purchase gift cards which can be used for food.

Since they joined Wolf Nation a year ago, the Carr family has had a huge impact on the CHS football program and local student/athletes.
