Well, they’re headed in the right direction.

After being blanked in a season-opening loss earlier in the week, the Coupeville High School girls soccer squad bounced back Thursday to net a hard-earned draw in its home debut.

Garnering goals from Genna Wright and Tia Wurzrainer, the Wolf booters exited the field with a 2-2 tie against visiting Friday Harbor.

The stalemate leaves Coupeville sitting at 0-1-1 in non-conference play, heading into its first games as a member of the new North Sound Conference.

CHS faces defending state champ King’s Sept. 11, then squares off with Sultan Sept. 13, with both games scheduled to play out at Coupeville’s Mickey Clark Field.

Thursday night the Wolves and Friday Harbor played a classic back-and-forth game.

Wright, who set a CHS freshman record with 10 goals last season, banged home her first score of her sophomore campaign off of a first-half penalty kick.

Knotted at 1-1 at the break, the teams exchanged scores down the stretch, but neither team was able to find a magical third tally.

Wurzrainer saved the draw for Coupeville by finding the back of the net with the equalizer, negating a 2-1 Friday Harbor lead.

Right into the fire.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team has no pushovers on its early-season schedule, and a Wolf team in transition will get a chance to learn quickly against tough competition.

First up was Meridian, which came within a game of making it to the state tourney last season.

The Trojans are already gelling this time around, as they rolled to a season-opening 4-0 win over Coupeville Tuesday in Bellingham.

After absorbing the shutout loss, the Wolves head back to Whidbey, where they’ll play three straight.

The home stand starts Thursday, with Friday Harbor, a 2B state quarter-finalist last year, arriving in Cow Town for a 4:30 match-up.

Then comes defending 1A state champs King’s Sept. 11 and always-tough Sultan Sept. 13, as CHS plays its first-ever games in the new North Sound Conference.

Second-year Coupeville girls coach Kyle Nelson, who led his team to a program-record eight wins last year, came away from the opening day loss with eyes set firmly on the long view.

“We lost, but it gave us a look against a good team and areas we will be looking to improve,” he said. “With many new players, and players in new positions, it was a first chance to start figuring out our system and changes that will need to be made.”

Jamboree season is upon us.

As high school teams head towards the start of regular-season play, many of them are getting in some work in live action scenarios.

Coupeville High School football went first last weekend, volleyball heads to Oak Harbor Saturday, but Thursday was all about the booters.

The Wolf girls soccer squad and coach Kyle Nelson traveled up Island to Memorial Stadium, where they faced off with league rival South Whidbey and host Oak Harbor.

Popping in from his home in the big city, wanderin’ photo god John Fisken was on scene and captured the images seen above.

A new concession stand and bathrooms are coming together at the entrance to Mickey Clark Field. (Scott Losey photo)

Soon. Or so they hope.

Keeping alive the tradition of leaving us guessing when it comes to construction, the new entrance, bathrooms and concession stand at Coupeville’s athletic field will NOT be ready for the start of fall sports.

But, the shiny new home stands, complete with press box, will be fully functional (unlike last fall), so let’s take our victories where we can find them.

The official word as of Wednesday, from Coupeville High School Athletic Director Willie Smith:

Due to construction, the main entrance, bathrooms, and concession buildings will not be finished in time for our first home Coupeville athletic events at Mickey Clark Field.

Soccer Game – Thurs. 9/6 @ 4:30

Spectators cannot park at the Elementary School parking lot earlier than 4 PM.

Parking prior to 4:00 is to be at the Coupeville High School baseball/softball field parking area; entrance from that area will be made from the back gate of the field, behind the baseball diamond.

Football Game – Fri. 9/7 @ 6:00

Entrance/parking is available at the Elementary School after 4:00.

Additionally, we will have a ticket booth set up at the back entrance by the baseball field, if spectators wish to park at the baseball/softball field.

Home stands will be in our new stands.

Patrons will have access to the two bathrooms located at the end of the old Multi-Purpose room (as well as Sanicans on the visitors side), and our old concession stand will be running.

We will update each week as construction continues.
