It was a very good day.

Less than 24 hours after being swept by South Whidbey, the Coupeville High School girls tennis team rebounded with a vengeance Friday afternoon.

With eight different Wolves winning for the first time this season, CHS swept host Friday Harbor 5-0 in varsity play, then fought to a 3-3 tie in JV action.

The varsity win lifts Coupeville to 1-4 on the season, and it bodes well for the Wolves starting a winning streak.

Friday Harbor travels to Whidbey Apr. 30 for a rematch, and, unless something radically changes, back-to-back team wins seems pretty likely.

Varsity singles players Genna Wright and Jillian Mayne, and first-year doubles duo Eryn Wood and Emily Fielder all tasted victory for the first time, as did JV doubles players Cassidy Holmes, Cecelia Camarena, Bruna Moratori, and Lola Jimenez.

It gets easier from here on out.

Most likely.

The Coupeville High School girls tennis team has played an odd schedule this spring, thanks to numerous issues, from weather to lack of non-conference foes.

When they have been able to take the court, the Wolves have clashed with two top teams, King’s and South Whidbey, and been stung twice by both schools.

A 5-0 loss at Langley Thursday leaves Coupeville sitting at 0-4 on the season heading into a road match Friday afternoon.

That opponent, Friday Harbor, is also 0-4, and the two schools meet for back-to-back contests today and then on Whidbey Apr. 30.

After that comes Coupeville’s lone non-conference match May 1 at Chimacum (2-11), before a doubleheader May 2 at Granite Falls (3-7).

The North Sound Conference tourney is set for May 7-8, also at Granite Falls, where a long string of tennis courts stretch into the sunset.

After that, if any Wolves qualify, is bi-districts May 17, and state, which goes down May 24-25.

There are five varsity spring sports teams at Coupeville High School.

Baseball has played 17 games, softball 14, boys soccer 13, and even track and field has been to eight meets.

And girls tennis?

Well, good news, because against all odds, they completed their third match Tuesday afternoon!

In a season beset by scheduling conflicts and a whole lot of liquid sunshine, that’s a start, even if the Wolves did fall 4-1 at King’s.

It was the first full match Coupeville had played in two weeks, and, hopefully, the start of three in four days.

The Wolves, who sit at 0-3 after two losses to King’s (the powerhouse of the North Sound Conference at a shiny 6-0), are set to travel to South Whidbey Thursday and Friday Harbor the day after.

Facing off with a strong Knights team in Shoreline, Coupeville nabbed its single varsity win at #1 doubles, where Tia Wurzrainer and Avalon Renninger rolled to a straight-sets win.

The Wolves came dangerously close to a second victory, but Emily Fiedler and Eryn Wood were nipped in a third-set tiebreaker at #2 doubles.

Just getting on the court is a win.

The Coupeville High School girls tennis team has been hit by scheduling issues, rain delays, and all manners of roadblocks this season.

So, even though the Wolves fell 4-1 Tuesday to visiting South Whidbey, fighting against buffeting wind and the league’s best team, it was still somewhat of a positive outcome.

While other CHS teams have broken double digits in games played, or are about to do so, the netters have a whopping total of two matches in the books.

The first didn’t come until Mar. 27 against King’s, and then the Wolves promptly went back to waiting, sitting another two weeks before Tuesday’s tilt.

At least the next match will come much quicker, barring any weather surprises, as Coupeville, 0-2 on the season, is scheduled to travel Thursday to Friday Harbor.

Facing off with a powerhouse South Whidbey team, which improved to 3-0 in North Sound Conference play, the Wolves put up a strong fight.

And no one played tougher than the duo of sophomore Jaimee Masters and freshman Abby Mulholland, who rallied for a win at #3 doubles.

After splitting the first two sets, the Wolves held off three match points in a third-set tiebreaker, eventually pulling out a victory to send the remaining fans home happy.

Both Masters and Mulholland came up with big shots down the stretch, forcing the action as the huddled masses prayed for relief from the cold and wind as the clock crept towards 7 PM.

The ticket to head home finally arrived on a perfectly-executed drop shot which bit a chunk off the back line, then skipped merrily away for the match-winning point.

The sound of tennis balls being whapped always brings the photographers out from hiding.

With hard court action in Coupeville finally kicking off Wednesday, intrepid paparazzi John Fisken spent several hours clicking away, making sure to nab a shot of all 16 Wolves in action.
