They are the present, and the future, of Wolf sports.

CHS sophomores Jacob Martin and Gabe Wynn, who share a birthday today, are among the brightest stars on the Cow Town scene these days.

During football season, #32 (Martin) and #33 (Wynn) were a hard-hittin’ duo on defense who also piled up some serious yardage on offense.

As they move into their junior seasons, those numbers should only increase.

Wynn is also a hoops stud (he saw varsity playing time as early as his freshman year) and baseball player who is following in the prodigious athletic footsteps of his mom, Robyn (Seth) Myers, a former standout at Oak Harbor.

Which is all fine and good, but the duo also stand tall as two of the classier dudes to rep the red and black.

Watch either one in practice, or in how they respond to their coaches when given instruction, and you will see two young men who represent the best of what Wolf Nation would hope for their athletes to be.

As Jacob and Gabe celebrate their birthdays today, take a quick moment to wish them the best.

They have earned it.

The kid has no quit in him.

That’s what I thought early in the first season that I saw Isaac Vargas play.

He was suiting up for the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad and still wearing glasses when he played.

During a scramble for the ball, he got smacked in the face and the glasses flew off his nose and hit the court.

Without pausing, he kicked them to the bench and took off down the court, possibly blindly, pursuing his man, who had the ball and was hoping to push the attack.

Vargas, who celebrates a birthday today, has kept that same go-for-broke style through all of his sports, whether it be hoops, soccer or football, where he made an impact as one of the leaders on the Wolf line.

He might not be the loudest or the brashest player — he actually seems pretty laid-back most of the time — but there is obviously a fire that burns in his heart.

Watching him give his all for the past three years, I have to say, I’m impressed.

If everyone played with Ike’s hustle, guts and drive, they’d be better for it.

Happy birthday, Mr. Vargas.

Birthday

Birthdays for everyone. Everyone, I said!

The birthdays, they are raining down today.

CHS assistant baseball coach Chris Chan (bottom, with son Drew and wife Bev in the photo above), Wolf seniors Marisa and Lucas Etzell (top, left and right) and the superstar of superstars — Ashley (Ellsworth-Bagby) Heilig (she gets two photos).

All have made a positive impact on Cow Town and the sports world therein, whether playing or coaching or doing some of both.

Coach Chan is one of the true class acts, both in the dugout and on the school board.

The Etzells, while different in nature (Lucas is a born politician, glad-handing and smooth-talking everyone in sight while Marisa has a softer, quieter, but no less out-going personality) are smart, talented and full of drive.

And then there is Ash, the Queen of everything.

Her athletic accomplishments on the volleyball court, the basketball court and softball diamond are legendary.

She is among the best the red and black has ever seen, or will ever see.

But it’s the pig-tail rockin’ girl who used to work the counter at Videoville with me who was even more impressive. And has never stopped getting more impressive with each passing year.

As she sits (possibly mere hours away) on the edge of becoming a mom herself, I hope Ashley knows how truly amazing and wonderful, such a vibrant lil’ firecracker, we all think she is.

Her son or daughter will be blessed to have a mom whose mere presence makes the world infinitely better.

Pretty good way to start their journey.

To all four, may your joint birthday be an awesome one. And, if Ashley’s first-born wants to join the party today, so much the better.

Maggie Crimmins is descended from royalty.

Her parents, Jon and Jodi (Christensen) Crimmins were two of the best and brightest to ever rep the red and black at Coupeville High School.

Her mom, quite simply, was the most ferocious force of nature to ever hit a basketball court, a whirlwind of flying elbows and knees who wiped out anyone (even her own teammates) if they dared to touch a basketball she had in her sights.

Maggie is not quite as much of a bruiser, but the CHS freshman, who celebrates a birthday today, has inherited all the other wonderful qualities of her mama.

Like Jodi (and the laid-back park ranger extraordinaire who fathered her), Maggie is a sweet-natured, fun slice o’ sunshine.

She lights up the world around her, and, along with older brother Aiden (pretty sunny himself), is keeping the family tradition strong.

We almost lost her to South Whidbey, but a change in dad’s job brought her home to the only school she could possibly attend.

Once a Wolf, always a Wolf.

From the little girl who once bopped around Videoville to the whip-smart, radiant young woman she is today, Maggie is a delight, pure and simple.

We are lucky to have her (and her family) back in Cow Town, making the town look good.

Happy birthday, Miss Crimmins. I hope it’s a great one.

The Man! Then, now and always!!

Legendary.

And that’s just his hair.

As he hits the big 2-1 today, former Coupeville High School three-sport sensation (and current college gridiron warrior) Mitch Pelroy continues to cast a long shadow.

During his days as a Wolf, he was a beast, starring in football, basketball and track — where he won 28 races in three years and advanced to the 1A state meet in each of his seasons.

Now, he’s a hard-hittin’, fast-runnin’ two-way threat for Montana Western’s football squad.

On whatever stage he has been on, Mitch has embraced the spotlight, giddy grin splashed across his face as he looks over his shoulder at the foes who are trying, and failing, to catch him.

His legacy at CHS lives on in speedy lil’ sis Kirsten, who is bustin’ out PRS and takin’ names on the oval herself.

When they ask how you spell Pelroy, the answer is F-A-S-T.

But with the speed comes class, commitment and a rock-solid work ethic, family traits handed down from brother to sister.

You were one of the best to ever rep the red and black, Mitch. The Man, then, now and always.

Happy birthday, Mr. Pelroy. Never stop being awesome.
