The future

They’re rolling a 21 so far.

Two days into the start of practice, Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball coaches Brett Smedley and Bob Martin have a strong pack of girls.

That number could easily grow or shrink as the Wolves move towards the actual start of play, but we here at Coupeville Sports are fond of jumping the gun, so here’s the roster as it stands now:

Ashleigh Battaglia
Kilah Camatti
Luci Coleburn
Hannah Davidson
Natalie Hollrigel
Nicole Laxton
Kalia Littlejohn
Emma Mathusek
Cassidy Moody
Avalon Renninger
Lindsey Roberts
Ashlie Shank
Ema Smith
Scout Smith
Oliana Stange
Megan Thorn
Maya Toomey-Stout
Zoe Trujillo
Seraina Weatherford
Sarah Wright
Tia Wurzrainer

CMS opens play with an appearance at the South Whidbey Jamboree Feb. 4.

The Wolves kick off their eight-game regular season schedule with a home match-up against Granite Falls Feb. 9.

OK, this is jumping the gun just a little bit.

But better to be prepared now and not worry about it later.

With the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball season having wrapped a few weeks back, the next count-down is to when the Wolf girls get their chance to take the court.

And, like I said, it’s a bit.

The first day of practice is Jan. 20, which is still almost four weeks away. The opening jamboree doesn’t tip off until Feb. 4.

But, also as I said, it’s never too early to plan ahead. To print out and laminate the schedule, to get into the gym (if you’re not already there) and work on your game.

Middle school ball is always a tricky thing to call, as kids come and go, bodies change and levels of desire heat up or wane in record time.

Some players hit the first day of practice with ankle-breakin’ moves in place, others haven’t ever picked up a ball.

That being said, the CMS 8th graders — which chould include some combination of already-established stars such as Lindsey Roberts, Kalia Littlejohn, Veronica Crownover and Sarah Wright — already have the look of a truly superior athletic class.

Following in the footsteps of a very-strong 9th grade class (this is where we stop to lament, once again, how few freshman girls stepped up this winter and hope for a sea change by sophomore year), the future of CHS hoops looks strong.

Want to see them (and the 7th graders) as they develop their games?

Clear your schedule and write-in some of the dates listed below:

Wed., Feb. 4 — @ South Whidbey Jamboree
Mon-9 — Granite Falls
Thur-12 — @ Langley
Mon-23 — @ Northshore
Wed-25 — Sultan
Mon., Mar. 2 — Lakewood
Wed-4 — @ King’s
Mon-9 — @ Granite Falls
Thur-12 Langley

Games start at 3 PM in the CMS gym (across the hall from the CHS gym) and are free.

7th and 8th rotate who starts first and you get four games, as both grades play JV and varsity contests.

The middle school bleachers will abuse your rear in ways never before dreamed. Prepare and pray that the refs aren’t in a “teaching mood” and want to call 2,912 fouls … in the first game.

“Well, they call me UPS, cause I always deliver!!”

Basketballs were bouncing and trash talk was flowing.

Well, at least I’d like to think so.

Regardless of whether there really was any yapping Wednesday, there was plenty of hoops action playing out in the Coupeville Middle School gym.

The highlight (at least for the locals) came in the 8th grade varsity game, where the Wolves used a 32-8 second half surge to shred visiting Sultan 57-23.

Working the sidelines to give you a feel for the action was photo whiz kid John Fisken, who delivered the pics that reside above.

“I learned this move from the five minutes of “Kill Bill” I saw on TNT that one time. It does NOT end well for you, son!!”

Um

“Um … coach Bob, he just went all “Karate Kid” on that dude. Can I do that, too? Coach Bob … COACH BOB?!?!?”

John Fisken outdid himself.

The wandering sage of the photography game slid through town Wednesday and fired off a few thousand clicks of the camera as the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams clashed with visiting King’s.

The seven pics above, action-packed all, are just a hint of what he captured.

After you bask in their glow (and either chuckle or grimace as you read my contributions — the “carefully” crafted cutlines), hop over to the links below and see the rest.

Be there or miss the moment when this guy goes coast-to-coast, breakin’ ankles all the way.

The young guns are ready to strut their stuff.

The Coupeville High School basketball squads are just getting going, but the Wolf middle school boys are already smack-dab in the middle of their season.

It’s a win-win for local fans, who can leave work early and catch the CMS hoopsters at home today.

If your rear can take the hardest bleachers in all the land, you can see four games for a very reasonable price (free), starting at 3 PM in the middle school gym (across the hallway from the high school gym).

King’s is the opponent and the 8th grade JV will play first, followed by the 7th JV, 8th varsity and 7th varsity.

Maybe think about bringing a cushion, cause I’m not kidding. Those CMS bleachers are like something out of “The Flinstones.”
