Get in my stomach, you tasty temptress! (Willie Smith photo)

Willie Smith is on the trail of culinary nirvana.

The Coupeville High School Athletic Director recently headed off to Friday Harbor with one mission in life — to eat a hamburger covered in mac ‘n cheese.

The Wolverines were selling the tasty treat as part of their concession fare for Friday’s football clash with CHS, and Smith was on the case.

Friday Harbor’s original offering, to which I say … dear sweet baby Jesus.

Unfortunately, as he bided his time in the line, the family right in front of him ordered the last available hamburgers.

After being (allegedly) tackled to the ground by wife Cherie and told that no, it was probably not a good look for an AD to sucker punch a kid for his burger, Willie found an alternative.

He got the concession stand folks to apply the mac ‘n cheese (and some bacon and condiments) to a hot dog and wandered away happy.

While some random Friday Harbor family remained blissfully unaware of how close they came to meeting the vaunted Two Fists o’ Fury.

Now back on his own island, Smith has had top-secret conversations with Coupeville’s football foodies, and word is the mac ‘n cheese dog is likely to be on the menu for the next Wolf home game.

That event, a Homecoming clash with Forks, is slated for Friday, Oct. 13.

Prepare your stomachs, Wolf Nation!

One of Whidbey Island’s most well-known restaurants will permanently close before the end of the month.

Chef Gordon Stewart is shuttering Gordon’s on Blueberry Hill Oct. 22, but will continue to operate Gordon’s Fusion Cuisine in Coupeville.

The former business is on Woodward Ave. in Freeland, while the latter is in the building formerly occupied by Christopher’s on Whidbey.

Stewart’s official farewell:

Leonard Edlund

Leonard Edlund is a righteous dude.

Since his arrival at Coupeville Middle/High School in 2021, he’s been a friendly, outgoing, hardworking guy — universally liked by his coworkers and the teens he helps shepherd through the day.

But now, medical issues have sidelined the assistant principal, preventing him from being a positive presence in the world of education he so obviously loves.

A statement from the school district, released Friday, said Edlund will be out until at least January.

For a man who has been at this work for three decades, missing out on the first day of school, missing out on being a vital part of student’s lives, has to be tough.

This is what he was built for, and his impact, here in Coupeville, and in other towns, has been hugely positive.

So, I’d like to ask the members of Wolf Nation to take a moment to make sure Edlund knows he isn’t forgotten about, that all of his time and efforts, the good cheer and the hard work, are appreciated.

Send him a note, a letter, a card wishing him the best.

CHS Attendance Secretary Barbi Ford, the true power behind the throne in the world of Wolf athletics, has volunteered to be our contact point for this effort, and make sure Edlund gets whatever positive messages are sent his way.

You can drop them off in the school office or mail them to:

Coupeville Middle/High School Vice Principal Leonard Edlund, seen here in 2022, is a popular, hardworking administrator. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Coupeville Middle/High School will be without an assistant principal for several months as Leonard Edlund takes a medical leave.

Edlund has been employed by the Coupeville School District since 2021.

Before that he was a principal in Arizona and an assistant principal in Tacoma.

In his absence, school administrators will shuffle duties and welcome back 19-year vet Tom Black, whose Dean of Students position was cut when the 2023-2024 budget was approved.

Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King released the following statement Friday afternoon:

Late last week we learned that our MSHS Assistant Principal will be out on medical leave and will not be returning until at least January of 2024.

While I received permission from Mr. Edlund to share that he is on medical leave I ask that we respect his privacy during this time.

Please join me in hoping that he makes a healthy return to work.

Since we learned this unexpected news late last week, we have been working on how to continue the duties typically assigned to our Assistant Principal.

I want to thank union leadership and our administrators for their quick assistance.

Here is an outline of our plans:

To address daily supervision and assist with discipline issues, Mr. (Tom) Black will be returning on a part time basis as our temporary Dean of Students.

We are thankful that Mr. Black is able to return and believe that this will be well received by our school community.

In order to have our Career and Technical Education (CTE) program continue to have leadership, our former Coupeville teacher, Susan Haldezos-Galligan, formerly Johnson, will become our Interim CTE Director for the duration of the 2023-2024 school year.

We are thankful for her willingness to help us in this area and we are fortunate to have someone of her caliber to lead our program.

Mr. (Geoff) Kappes will need additional support with teacher evaluations so we are restoring Allyson Cundiff’s contract days that were reduced since last year so she can do the evaluations of some of our secondary teachers.

Mr. Kappes and Mrs. Cundiff will be announcing teacher evaluator assignments in the days ahead.

We are thankful that Allyson is willing to take on this additional work.

If we have any changes to these plans, we will let you know.

Phoenix Da Costa-Ford, livin’ the mermaid life.

There’s magic in the air, and the sea.

Phoenix Da Costa-Ford — Wolf Mom, master scoreboard operator and all-around mega talent — is embracing a second persona as a bewitching mermaid.

She was in full costume Saturday at “Ye Old Yarrrd Sale” at The Enchanted Beedle, a gift boutique in Coupeville.

Da Costa-Ford and friends were helping raise money for a Renaissance Fair scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend 2024, which will go down at the Whidbey Island Fairgrounds and Events Center.

It’ll be the first local Ren Faire in close to a decade.

“I know that for years people on Whidbey have been begging for a Ren Faire,” Da Costa-Ford said. “And we are now underway to making that dream come true!”

While selling mermaid-themed merchandise, she also dressed the part, bringing the magic of the sea alive.

“At the yard sale I met not only excited kids but excited adults as well, who were living out their dream of meeting a real mermaid!” Da Costa-Ford said.

“I had the best time bringing smiles to our Coupeville community and now I know for sure that this is the career for me!”

Da Costa-Ford, who has launched an Instagram page to celebrate her mermaid lifestyle, is available for birthday parties and events as well.
