Danny Savalza (left) and Tim Quinn ask you to Bow Down.

Danny Savalza (left) and Tim Quinn ask you, respectfully, to Bow Down to Cow Town.

It is not the first time, nor probably the last, that I have irritated someone.

In my idiotic exuberance, I have sometimes referred to Coupeville as Cow Town over the past few months.

Now, I understand that there are some who find this disparaging. But I am not one of those people.

I have lived on Whidbey since 1989 and I know that the term has often been used derisively by those who want to make fun of Coupeville.

Poopville is another old favorite.

My reason for using Cow Town is to reclaim the words and turn them from mocking into a celebration.

This is a town built on farming, on cows. And, while economic times have changed the look of the town, why would you not be proud of that?

The Shermans, the Bishops, the Engles — these are the names that made Coupeville what it is. And farming made them what they are.

We should be proud of that heritage.

We are Cow Town, and you will bow down to us.

But, if it troubles enough people (I know it bothers at least some), I can reign myself in … a bit.

Won’t like it (no ma’am), but I’ll abide and retire the phrase.

So, here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to let you, my readers, make the call.

If you’re fine with Bow Down to Cow Town, vote YES.

If you think I’m trading off of old slurs better forgotten, vote NO.

The poll will be open for 48 hours and close at noon Tuesday. You can vote as many times as you like.

Democracy will decide which route I take starting at 12:01 that afternoon.

Vote “E” for “The Final Word.” Cause give her credit, she never, ever, ever, EVER backs down.

Who do you fear?

In Coupeville that’s a complicated question, as least when it comes to high school basketball referees.

Cause we fear them all.

Over the past couple of seasons, refs have trod a painful path of tears across the CHS gym court.

We’re not talking a trivial call here or there, but night after night of a sustained, gut-wrenching, game-blowing, gym-fleeing-in-record-time body of work.

And, while it’s been slightly better this season (no one has allowed a visiting player to remain in the game AFTER throwing a punch at a Wolf player’s head a foot away from a ref this year, so that’s a start), there’s still enough to allow us to merrily grumble.

And yes, I’m sure these refs — with maybe one exception — are good, upstanding folks who take way too much crap for what they’re earning.

There’s even a couple of really solid men and women on the job, again putting up with our crap. We see them far too infrequently.

But we have become so scarred here in Cow Town, by on-court actions and back-room whisperings, that I doubt there is a single die-hard fan who doesn’t immediately lock on to the ref crew when it appears in the gym doorway.

Sometimes there are sighs, sometimes agonized screams of “Sweet Lord in Heaven, they’re still lettin’ Mr. Ed out without his seeing-eye dog?!!?!?”

So, let’s play a little game.

From the photos assembled above, cast your votes for which ref you absolutely, positively hate to see darken our gym.

Vote early, vote often. Work out your aggression in a constructive manner.

The poll is open for 48 hours (closes 10 PM Christmas Eve) and there are no limits on how often you vote.

Let the dark side flow from you, my sons and daughters of Wolf Nation and emerge into the rest of basketball season cleansed.

Unless they see this and get really, really pissed and … oh, yeah, the whole seeing-eye dog thing. I think we’re safe.

Vote for Josh Bayne! He would vote for you!! (John Fisken photo)

Vote for Josh Bayne! He would vote for you!! (John Fisken photo)

OK, we’re going to need to work fast, and smart.

Northwest Elite Index has posted a poll to pick the best football performance from Week 10 of the high school season, and we’ve got a little over 14 hours to blow up their poll and bring victory to Cow Town.

Our guy, Coupeville High School senior Josh Bayne, is in third place in the three-man slug-fest, but he’s just a vote or two off of second place and first place is not out of sight.

The voting ends at noon Wednesday and the poll claims you can only vote once every 24 hours. BUT, I did find that I could vote once in Firefox, then slip over to Internet Explorer and get another vote in.

Just sayin…

And sure, there’s no trophy to go with this victory. Just the sweet, sweet satisfaction of spankin’ the big boy schools, in this case represented by Eastlake and Charles Wright Academy.

I mean, come on, are we going to just bow down to some private school fancy lad and let them have the honor without a fight? This is a fight for public school supremacy.

Spread the word! Vote (and maybe vote again). Roar, Wolf Nation, roar!!

The “Face of the Future” belongs to CJ Smith.

Smith, who will be a junior at Coupeville High School in the fall, held off a hard-charging Kacie Kiel and 31 other contestants to win our 48-hour orgy of voting madness.

His reward — he’ll hold down the banner photo across the top of this blog through Jan. 1.

In the end, 34,719 votes were cast, with Smith topping the field with 7,290 votes (21%), edging out Kiel (5,869) and Makana Stone (4,684).

Skyler Lawrence and Zane Bundy rounded out the top five.

After moving to town midway through his sophomore season, Smith flashed signs of brilliance on the basketball court for the Wolf JV boys’ hoops squad.

Then he played a substantial role on the CHS baseball squad, which made it all the way to the state tourney.

Quick on the base paths and fluid in the field, Smith played several infield slots and eventually became the team’s #2 pitcher as the season wore on.

Who is “The Face of the Future?”

Two weeks ago, we honored the second annual coupevillesports.com Athlete Supreme, who turned out to be recently graduated CHS senior Amanda Fabrizi.

As the 2013-2014 champ, she followed in the footsteps of our first winner, Nick Streubel, and will hold the title until next spring.

But sports are an ever-moving machine, and, as we head through June, it’s time to look to the future.

Over the next 48 hours, you, the reader, have the chance to pick the new face of this blog.

Below, you’ll find 33 athletes.

Why 33? Cause that’s Larry Bird’s number and he’s the best big-moment athlete in the history of sports. Go look it up on yer Wikipedia…

Anyway, these 33 (which I selected on my own after much screaming, a little bribing and at least three punches thrown at myself … by myself) are vying to take over the banner photo that goes across the top of this here blog.

It was a brutal process, and there are probably another 10 athletes who could easily be on this list. Next time.

Aaron Trumbull and Carson Risner, who would on the ballot, were disqualified because they held down the banner photo for the first year and a half of the blog, and this is about giving others a shot at “glory.”

The winner will take up residence Tuesday night and will hold the post until at least Jan. 1. Guaranteed.

The rules are simple: there are none!!

The poll is wide open. You can, and should, vote as often as you want. The poll closes at 3 PM Pacific Daylight Time, Tuesday, June 24.

48 hours of Wild West action, with one student athlete emerging as the new face of Coupeville Sports.

Let the bodies hit the floor. Let the voting thumbs fall off.

****VOTING CLOSED — THANKS FOR PLAYING!!****
