The magic number is 21.

That’s how many goals Coupeville High School soccer players have combined to score this season, with nine different Wolves beating opposing goaltenders.

Leading the way is freshman Tamsin Ward, who has accounted for more than a third of the tallies by herself.

The numbers are ever-shifting, however, and with the Wolf girls slated to play four more regular season games, and the boys scheduled for seven, expect things to change.

Where we sit, as of Oct. 8:

Girls:

Tamsin Ward – 8
Lyla Grose – 3
Paige Hill – 2
Finley Helm – 1
Ariella Lee-Spaulding – 1

Boys:

Sage Arends – 2
Brian Thompson – 2
Liam Lawson – 1
Edmund Wilson – 1

Marcelo Gebhard has a reunion with mom Stephanie.

A pack of Wolves are living out their dreams of playing college sports this fall.

Coupeville grads are suiting up for football, volleyball, soccer, softball, and baseball teams across the state and the USA.

Madison McMillan (softball) and Landon Roberts (baseball) are involved in fall ball activities on the diamond at Edmonds College and Walla Walla College, respectively, while Nezi Keiper is anchoring the defense for an Edmonds women’s soccer squad which is 6-3-1.

Out on the gridiron, Marcelo Gebhard is suiting up at Lewis-Clark Valley College in Idaho, while Ben Smith is lining up for Lakeland University in Wisconsin.

Smith, a grad student, has racked up five tackles, a sack, and a quarterback hit in two games, while Gebhard’s team seemingly posts no stats on the internet, frustrating his hometown sports reporter.

Back closer to home, former Wolf teammates Lyla Stuurmans and Mia Farris are slated to oppose each other for the first time as college rivals this Friday, Oct. 10, when Skagit Valley College hosts Whatcom College.

Stuurmans has played in 19 matches for an SVC squad which sits at 11-10 on the season and is filling up the stat sheet just like she did back in her days at CHS.

The always highlight reel-worthy hitter has compiled 110 kills, 53 digs, 31 block assists, 17 service aces, five solo blocks, and 147.5 points.

Farris, living up to her high school nickname of “Mia the Magnificent,” continues to soar high as one of three Whatcom spikers to have played in all 16 of her team’s matches.

Keaton and Vivian’s lil’ sis is a perpetual powerhouse, popping for 46 kills, 23 aces, 113 digs, eight assists, seven block assists, and 73.5 points.

She’s #1 on her team in digs and sets played (52) and #2 in aces.

Coming off a season where it was in playoff contention until the final game, the Coupeville High School co-ed soccer squad landed four players on the All-League team.

Senior Cael Wilson, who led the Wolves in scoring with seven goals, was tabbed as a First-Team pick by Northwest 2B/1B League boys’ coaches.

He was joined in receiving honors by three other Class of 2025 members, with Preston Epp and Hurlee Bronec named as Second-Team picks and Ayden Wyman claiming Honorable Mention status.

Ayden Wyman sacrifices her noggin.

Wyman notched 13 goals across her first two seasons of high school soccer while leading the Wolf girls’ program, before joining the CHS boys for her junior and senior years after Coupeville was unable to field a girls’ squad.

She was one of two female players to notch All-League honors, joining Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood sophomore Lydia Negash.

Lopez Island, which had a breakout season while finishing 2nd at the 1B/2B state tourney, swept the league’s top honors.

Junior Andris Meissner was tabbed as MVP, with Mycah Kraushaar honored as Coach of the Year and her team also receiving the sportsmanship award.

Orcas Island, which won its second state title, had the most players picked, with seven of its booters receiving First or Second-Team honors.

Coupeville went 4-4 in conference play while vying in a league which produced three of the top four teams in the state, and 6-8-1 overall.

That included a landmark home win over Mount Vernon Christian, its first in 13 games against the perennial power.

Nezi Keiper

Put Nezi Keiper on a soccer pitch, and she’s a star.

It was true in high school, and it remains true in college.

Keiper, a 2023 Coupeville High School grad, capped her debut season at Edmonds College with a pair of honors.

The freshman defender was honored by Northwest Athletic Conference coaches recently by being named as a First-Team All-Region player for her play on the pitch.

The NWAC has four regions, and Keiper and Edmonds play in the North.

The former Wolf was also selected for the annual NWAC Women’s Soccer All-Star Game, which went down Sunday at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila.

During her time in Coupeville, Keiper was a standout student/athlete.

The best player on one of the last Wolf middle school football teams, she went on to have successful runs as a soccer and basketball player while in high school.

A team captain and First-Team All-Conference pick for CHS, Keiper is also a member of the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame.
