Do it, for the kids.

Have a lot of soccer knowledge? Or just the basics, but you want to help shape the destiny of Central Whidbey’s young booters anyway?

Old pro or first timer, the Central Whidbey Soccer Club is in desperate need of coaches.

“If we don’t get coaches for our U-8 coed, U-10 boys, U-12 boys, and U-12 girls teams, there are going to be a lot of very disappointed young soccer players,” said Michelle Cernick.

The soccer club, which has been a vibrant part of Coupeville’s sports scene, almost shut down this year because of a lack of volunteers. But a small, but determined group of parents rallied to revive it.

Now the players are in place, and the first games kick off Saturday, Sept. 8.

But, with just two coaches currently in place, things are once again dicey.

If you’re interested in helping out, and want to get that nice, warm glow in your chest in return, drop an email to president@centralwhidbeysoccer.com.

Former Coupeville High School track and soccer star Marisa Etzell is studying abroad in Australia. (Photo by Dawn Spilsbury Pucci)

Four down, three to go.

Former Coupeville High School athletic supernova Marisa Etzell, she of the fleet feet on the track oval and soccer pitch, is out to conquer every continent.

Etzell, currently a junior at Pacific Lutheran University, is spending a chunk of time in Australia, operating as a student abroad.

As she enjoys her time Down Under and experiences continent #4 on her check list, she’s documenting her adventures on a blog.

Want to keep up to date with one of the most talented, selfless, remarkable young women on the planet?

Of course you do.

So, here you go, a handy, dandy link to Marisa’s words and pics, as they arrive by carrier pigeon from the land of Crocodile Dundee.

Well … I’ve just been informed that’s not how the internet works at all. Apparently no carrier pigeons, just a bunch of tubes and … what, still not right?

Maybe just ignore me, and pop over here:

Former Coupeville star Mia Littlejohn will play soccer and basketball at Santa Monica College. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The leading scorer in Coupeville High School girls soccer history has made the jump to college ball — in two sports — and is already practicing and fundraising with her new teammates.

Mia Littlejohn, who graduated from Oak Harbor this spring after playing soccer and basketball for three years at CHS, is now attending Santa Monica College.

And she’s putting in four hours of practice some days, two hours in the morning with the booters, then two hours in the afternoon with the hoops squad.

Santa Monica College, which was founded in 1929, is a two-year school which services 30,000+ full-time and part-time students.

Famous alumni include a pair of two-time Oscar winners in Hilary Swank and Sean Penn, as well as boxing champ Laila Ali, Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest.

The school fields teams in 16 sports. The Corsairs play in the 16-team Western State Conference, the oldest community college conference in California.

Santa Monica went 15-3-3 in women’s soccer last season, winning the Southern division of the WSC with a flawless 8-0 mark.

The Corsair booters kick off a new campaign Aug. 28 with a road game at Oxnard.

The SMC women’s basketball team was 9-17 last season.

Littlejohn earned multiple All-Conference honors in both of her sports during her three-year run at Coupeville High School, capping things by being named Olympic League MVP in soccer after her junior season.

She rattled home 27 goals that year, which is the most in school history, girl or boy.

Mia’s career mark of 35, scored between 2014-2016, stands as Coupeville’s best for a female booter, though younger sister Kalia, who will be a senior this fall, is hot on her heels with 33.

On the hardwood, the elder Littlejohn tallied 317 points in three seasons for the Wolves, which puts her 34th on the girls career scoring chart.

Santa Monica’s soccer team is running a fundraiser. To help out, and see Mia lead off the team video, pop over to:

Sights like this — a young soccer player learning the game in Coupeville — may be going away. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Barring a miracle, there will be no organized youth soccer in Coupeville this fall.

With its Board of Directors reduced to one member, Central Whidbey Soccer Club President Robert Wood announced Monday the club will shut down operations in a month.

In a letter he issued to the youth soccer community, he implored others to step up, while admitting he has asked for the same thing for two years, with little response.

Wood’s letter:

It is with great sorrow I must inform you that our Club is going to close as of July 1, 2018.

For the past two years I have eagerly invited community enthusiasts and soccer parents to join our Board of Directors, and no one has stepped forward.

As of Sunday, May 20th, I am the final CWSC Board Member — all others have either resigned or are engaged with family affairs which take priority.

In order for the club to survive we have just over 30 days to install a new Board of Directors in all positions as listed below.

If we do not, then the fall season is canceled for all age groups, all equipment will be donated appropriately, and all funds will be distributed to Coupeville High School as a donation to its soccer teams.

A small fund will be kept in our bank account to maintain the Club’s domain name and structure should anyone wish to revive it in the near future.

What is needed:

PRESIDENT: direct the operations of the Club; plan for future growth

VICE-PRESIDENT: perform all duties of the President in his/her absence; assist all other BOD positions with issues they have; provide leadership and guidance for the current or upcoming soccer season to allow the President to focus on future events

SECRETARY: schedule and attend meetings and record minutes for archive and legal purposes; assist Treasurer and Registrar in their duties

TREASURER: manage all financial endeavors for the Club; create and maintain current expense budget and plan for future events/budgets; pay all invoices according to the Club’s operating procedures

REGISTRAR: manage and maintain registration capabilities on the CWSC website; create and manage teams and player assignments; assist the Treasurer and the Secretary in the performance of their duties

SPONSORSHIP: acquire financial sponsorships for the Club; assist the Secretary and Registrar in the performance of their duties

EQUIPMENT: determine equipment requirements for the current and future season; working with Treasurer develop an equipment-budget; assist all other BOD positions in the performance of their duties

Tasks that require special attention:

Financial management and Electronic Bill Pay with Heritage Bank (local)

Management and upkeep of the club’s Google for Non-Profit accounts and electronic files

Management and upkeep of the club’s website — http://www.centralwhidbeysoccer.com/

I’m sorry that this situation has arrived.

I wish I had the leadership and strength to gain a new BOD in the shortest possible time and allow the Club to continue operations and provide an opportunity to learn the beautiful game.

Should a group of you wish to serve the Club and community and continue operations I am happy to remain on as an adviser to assist in the transition.

I wish you all well and hope to see you on the pitch sometime soon.

Sincerely,
Robert Wood
CWSC President
