It all starts again.

We arrive at Monday and a new week stretches out in front of Coupeville High School’s sports teams, a chance to keep a hot streak alive or regroup and charge back into the fray.

Unless you play tennis or golf, than you just get to wait.

The Wolf girl netters (3-2) are on a very long break right now (they last played a match Mar. 26 and don’t return to action until April 15), as is CHS golfer Christine Fields (Mar. 27-April 14).

But, the other four sports — baseball, softball, track and boys’ soccer — are all busy this week, mainly on the road.

Baseball (3-4) kicks off a three-game series with Cedarcrest at home today (4 PM), then travels to Duvall Wednesday and Thursday (JV), before playing host again Friday.

Softball (2-3) hits the road for a doubleheader at Archbishop Thomas Murphy Tuesday, before a non-conference game at Meridian Thursday.

Soccer (3-2) gets on the bus to face the #1 team in the Cascade Conference, ATM, Tuesday, then hosts the last-place team, Granite Falls, Friday (4 PM JV/6 PM varsity).

And, finally, after a two-week break of its own, the Wolf track team travels to Cedarcrest Thursday for a three-team meet that will also include Lakewood.

To get you in the mood, we present the medley of photos above. It’s a new week, let the butt-whuppin’ commence.

The rain stayed away just long enough Friday to be replaced by sweet, sweet Langley tears.

With the Coupeville High School softball squad rallying for a 9-5 victory over their Island rivals, all was set right in the sporting universe.

On hand to snap a few photos (some of which show the beginning of rain drops) was travelin’ photo whiz kid John Fisken.

The spring belongs to the Wolves.

Snatching a come-from-behind 9-5 victory over host South Whidbey Friday, the Coupeville High School softball team officially guaranteed the Wolves will beat the Falcons in the duel for Island supremacy this season.

With multiple wins in softball and baseball, CHS is a shiny 6-2 against SWHS over five sports this spring, with one more battle apiece remaining in softball, girls’ tennis and boys’ soccer.

The diamond win, which came even without starting left fielder Haley Sherman, who was on a family vacation, snapped a three-game losing skid for the Wolves and firmly cemented them as the top 1A team in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

Coupeville is 2-3 while South Whidbey is 2-6 (1-6 in league play). With wins in both battles between the arch-rivals, the Wolves have clinched a tiebreaker, if needed.

Better still, CHS played a complete game, something coach David King had been preaching.

“We played a clean game defensively with no errors,” he said. “We made all of the routine plays and just played solid all game. This has been a point of emphasis this week, make the routine plays.

“Offensively, everyone in the line-up contributed,” King added. “We showed patience and we walked six times to go with our 10 hits.”

The biggest hit came off of the bat of Madeline Roberts, as the senior shortstop smacked a two-run double to break a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh.

Her blast scored Tiffany Briscoe, who had eked out a one-out walk, and Monica Vidoni, who reached on a fielder’s choice.

The Wolves then padded their lead, with Breeanna Messner lofting a sacrifice fly to right, followed by a game-capping RBI single from pitcher McKayla Bailey.

Bailey never gave the Falcons a chance to rally in their half of the seventh, punching out South Whidbey one-two-three.

She forced back-to-back come-backers to the mound, then induced the final batter to ground out to Emily Licence at third.

After a brief rough spot early, Bailey was money, gunning down 12 of the final 13 hitters, giving up just a solitary walk from the fourth through the seventh.

Coupeville had jumped out quickly, grabbing a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.

Roberts led off with a walk, then skittered to second on a steal and came home on a Messner RBI single. Madeline Strasburg chopped her own RBI single up the middle, then came around to score on an illegal pitch.

Capping a nine-batter assault, Vidoni lashed an RBI single to right for her first hit of the season.

After falling behind 5-4, Coupeville rallied to tie the game in the fourth, using a Roberts single, a Bailey double and an RBI single from Hailey Hammer.

Four different Wolf hitters (Roberts, Messner, Strasburg, Bailey) rapped out two hits apiece, while five players (Roberts, Messner, Hammer, Strasburg, Vidoni) recorded RBIs, as Coupeville swung the bat well from one through nine.

Even the batters who didn’t get hits made an impact, with Jae LeVine keeping a rally alive by sacrificing her body and getting on board via being plunked by a pitch, and Briscoe scoring the game-winning run.

It wasn’t good. But it could have been worse.

A lot worse.

Playing the #1 team in the Cascade Conference Wednesday, the Coupeville High School softball team struck out 13 times (eight in a row at one point) en route to losing 12-3 to visiting Granite Falls.

Still, that’s not as bad as losing 21-0 in just five innings, a pasting Coupeville’s Island rival, South Whidbey, suffered against the Tigers just a few days ago.

So, small victory.

Now 1-3 on the season, the Wolves play their next six games on the road, starting with a rematch Friday against South Whidbey, who they beat in their opener.

After that come doubleheaders at Archbishop Thomas Murphy and Sultan (the extra games due to earlier rain-outs) packaged around a non-conference tilt at Meridian.

Coupeville finally returns home April 16 and then plays five of its next six at home.

Facing off with Granite Falls, the only unbeaten team in the conference, the Wolves got picked apart quickly.

The Tigers led off with a single and a towering home run to left that was still gaining elevation as it cleared the fence.

Granite loaded the bases after that, but Haley Sherman put an end to that threat.

The Wolf senior snagged a long fly to left for the second out, then pivoted and unleashed a cannon throw to Breeanna Messner behind the plate, gunning down a Granite runner who tried to tag up and score.

While the Tigers never had a big break-out inning, they continued to toss up numbers on the board in every inning. Another home run sailed over the fence and Granite put together 10 runs of offense in the first five innings.

Coupeville did little to counter, at least at first.

After Madeline Roberts led off the bottom of the first with a ground-out, the next eight Wolves went down on strikes.

“The hitters need to make adjustments at the plate. They need to be ready to hit,” said CHS coach David King. “We are watching too many good pitches go by for called strikes and then get into a hole and that puts the pitcher in control and we have to hit their pitch.”

CHS finally broke through in the fourth on back-to-back bunt singles off the bats of Roberts and Messner, followed by an RBI sac fly from Hailey Hammer.

The Wolves added two more in the sixth, with Hammer’s two-run single plating Roberts (hit by a pitch) and Messner (walk).

The damage could have been more, but McKayla Bailey, hitting in front of Hammer, was flat-out-robbed when her blast to center was hauled in, over the shoulder, on the run, by a Tiger outfielder.

While Coupeville committed five errors in the field, King was pleased with the hustle he saw.

The Wolves turned three double plays, including a smooth one by Bailey, who snatched a liner out of air on the third base side of the pitcher’s mound, then whirled and nailed the runner at second for the punch-out.

Along with her double play, Sherman narrowly missed making a spectacular diving catch on another well-hit ball.

“We are making strides on the defensive end, despite the errors,” King said. “What we are doing better is reducing the mental mistakes and making the proper play when needed.

“We need to keep plugging away and reduce the physical errors now and get more aggressive on attacking the ball on defense,” he added. “Even though Haley didn’t come up with the diving catch in left, this is the kind of effort we need to be making on every ball. Don’t hold anything back.”
