Powered by Coupeville grad Sarah Wright, the Sewanee: University of the South softball squad rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Johnson University Saturday in Tennessee.

Winning 10-0 and 10-4, the Tigers notched their first victories of the new campaign, and sit at 2-4 on the season.

Sewanee returns to action next weekend, when it travels to Georgia for back-to-back twinbills.

Wright and Co. play a doubleheader at Agnes Scott College Saturday, Feb. 22, then bounce over to Wesleyan College for two more games the next day.

The Tigers play the first 15 games of their 40-game schedule on the road, not making their home debut until March 7.

Facing off with Johnson University Saturday, Sewanee controlled the action from start to finish.

Wright caught both games of the doubleheader, collecting three hits and two RBI while holding down the #5 slot in the lineup.

On the season, the former Coupeville star is hitting .313 with five hits, three RBI, two walks, and an on-base percentage of .389.

That puts her in the top three on the team in all five offensive categories.

A freshman at Sewanee, Wright is studying politics in between softball games and practices.

During her time at CHS, she was class Valedictorian, while playing volleyball, soccer, basketball, and softball.

Wright capped her prep softball career by being tabbed as the 2019 North Sound Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while helping the Wolves advance to the state tourney for the third time in program history.

She’s entered a whole new world.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright became the latest in a string of Wolves to take their game to the next level when she made her collegiate softball debut this weekend.

Wright, now a freshman at Sewanee: the University of the South, played four games in two days in two states, as the Tigers softball team kicked off their 40-game season with back-to-back doubleheaders.

While Sewanee came out on the short end of the score, being swept 8-0 and 10-0 by Judson (Ala), and 3-0 and 6-3 by Fort Valley State (GA), Coupeville’s progeny was a bright spot.

Wright collected two hits, a walk, and her team’s only RBI, which came on a bases-loaded free pass.

While the season is just 10% played, the former Wolf star is tied for the team lead in OBP (on base percentage) and hits.

Sewanee returns to action next weekend, when it hits the road again, playing a doubleheader February 15 against Johnson (TN).

The Tigers play their first 15 games away from their home field in Tennessee, not making their home debut until Mar. 7.

Wright’s season stretches from Feb. to late April.

During her time at CHS, the ever-ebullient one was a four-year star for the softball team, helping carry the Wolves to the state tourney during her senior season, where they beat Dear Park and came within a play of upending Cle Elum.

Wright also had strong stints as a basketball, volleyball, and soccer player, was the class valedictorian, and may have threatened to eat a worm of two to amuse her softball teammates.

Schedule your spring afternoons

The upcoming spring sports season, which kicks off March 2, is the finale for both the 2019-2020 school year, and for Coupeville’s two-year run in the North Sound Conference.

When a new school year rolls around in the fall, CHS will have dropped down a classification, from 1A to 2B, and will be off to rejoin old-school rivals in the Northwest 2B/1B League.

But, before we get there, five Wolf teams still have a season to play, with one squad — the softball sluggers — seeking to exit with back-to-back league titles.

As you peruse the schedules below, know that Mother Nature will undoubtedly wreak havoc with them at some point.

So, use them as a jumping off point, but also keep an eye out for changes, which you can find at a couple of places.

In the varsity schedules below, asterisks indicate a league game, and to the surprise of almost everyone, four of the five Wolf spring teams have more home games than road trips.

And, while track and field is the only sport which will spend more time on the bus than hanging out in its own grandstand, the program has three home meets, which is still pretty dang good.

Little League moves into on-deck circle

Time to think about the spring.

Central Whidbey Little League is hosting an “Early Registration Day and Skills Camp” Saturday, January 18.

The event runs from noon to 2 PM at the Coupeville High School gym, and is open to children ages 5-15 who live in Central Whidbey (Coupeville and Greenbank).

All age groups (T-Ball, baseball, and fastpitch softball) are included in the skills camp.

Parents are encouraged to register their children at the league’s site — https://www.centralwhidbeylittleleague.com/ — or at the skills camp.

If you get registered by Jan. 18, you save $10.

A second registration day (at full cost) and skills camp is set for Feb. 22.

For next Saturday’s event, players are asked to wear athletic clothing and “good gym shoes.”

It’s recommended they bring their baseball and softball gear, if they have it, though some will be provided for those in need.

She’ll be back

The union that was meant to be.

Hey, the weather was better. So, that’s a start.

Coupeville grad Veronica Crownover and the Washington State University club softball squad have endured freezing temps, rain, and plenty of doom ‘n gloom-lookin’ clouds during the opening of their season.

After winning four of six games while battling the weather, the Cougars found slightly more balmy temps awaiting them in Eugene this weekend, but the game scores took a turn slightly for the worse.

Wazzu pulled out a come-from-behind 9-7 win Saturday, then fell 13-5 and 7-1 Sunday to the University of Oregon, dropping its record to 5-4 headed into winter break.

With fall ball wrapping, Crownover and Co. put the mitts and bats away for a bit, with the spring portion of the season kicking off in February.

WSU, which opened by taking two of three from both Boise State and Gonzaga, played this weekend minus its starting pitcher (foot injury) and with its catcher hampered by a numb leg which limited her movement.

Crownover, who has swung a hot bat in her college debut, picked up a pair of singles and an RBI in the series.

The former Wolf was also a vacuum at first base, pulling in several short throws to nab the out.

A freshman at Wazzu, Crownover, when she’s not bashing softballs, is on track for a career in saving all the animals.

All of them, I said!
