They’re shutting down for a bit.

Well, not totally, as the Coupeville High School basketball teams will continue to practice during the holidays, but there are no more games on the schedule until Jan. 5.

That’s when the Wolves travel to the wilds of Darrington to kick off the 2024 portion of the 2023-2024 hoops season.

Coupeville’s boys enjoy a bonding moment.

For now, you can marinate in an up-to-the-moment look at where Northwest 2B/1B League standings currently stand.

A busy week, then the break.

Coupeville High School basketball teams have their second-straight three-game set in the days ahead, before a two-week holiday shutdown arrives.

Both the Wolf girls and boys welcome Forks to town Tuesday, before climbing on a school bus and heading East for tournament-style action.

Coupeville’s girls square off with Cle Elum Wednesday and Kittitas Thursday, while the boys reverse things.

Brad Sherman’s squad rumble with Kittitas Thursday, then play Cle Elum Friday in the 2023 finale.

“A long trip on a school bus? Yay…”

After that, both CHS squads are off (from games at least) until the first week of January.

With that in mind, here are where things sit through Dec. 16:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 2-0 2-4
Coupeville 1-0 5-1
Orcas Island 1-1 3-4
La Conner 0-0 3-3

Turn up the intensity.

After a somewhat slow week in which Coupeville High School basketball teams played just once, the next six days are about to get very busy.

The Wolf boys head to Granite Falls Tuesday, while the CHS girls host Orcas Island Wednesday in a non-conference game against a league rival.

After that comes a dual trip to Friday Harbor on Friday, with those games being the first official league contests of the season.

Things wrap Saturday with a home doubleheader against next-door neighbor South Whidbey, with the Wolf girls celebrating the 50th anniversary of the program at halftime of their game.

As we head into the busy season, a look at where things sit through Dec. 10:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
Concrete 0-0 2-2
Coupeville 0-0 3-1
Darrington 0-0 1-2
Friday Harbor 0-0 2-3
La Conner 0-0 2-3

It was a busy first week.

Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams played 27 games across the first seven days of the new season, with 14 of those in just the past two days.

None of the opening bouts were conference rumbles, however, so everyone is still tied for first place in the league standings.

Sort of.

After that initial flurry, in which Coupeville High School varsity hoops teams combined to play five times, things slow down this coming week for the Wolves.

Neither the boys nor the girls take the floor against a foe until Saturday, Dec. 9, when CHS listens to the song of the bus wheels during a trek to the wilds of Sultan.

Between now and then, plenty of time to tweak things in practice, rest any early-season injuries, and gaze upon the standings.

Where things sit through games of Dec. 2:

Northwest League boys’ basketball:

School League Overall
Concrete 0-0 1-0
Coupeville 0-0 2-1
Darrington 0-0 1-1
Friday Harbor 0-0 1-2
La Conner 0-0 1-2
MV Christian 0-0 0-1
Orcas Island 0-0 1-1

Northwest League girls’ basketball:

School League Overall
Concrete 0-0 0-0
Coupeville 0-0 0-2
Darrington 0-0 1-0
Friday Harbor 0-0 1-2
La Conner 0-0 1-1

The standings are frozen.

Regular season play for all fall sports teams finished this past week, and everyone still alive is off to the playoffs.

That means, first and foremost, that this is our final standings story until basketball gets underway.

But it doesn’t mean there isn’t action coming your way this coming week.

Coupeville High School volleyball plays Monday (in Lacey) and Wednesday (in La Conner) in the District 1/2 tourney, trying to punch its ticket to state for the first time since 2017.

Wolf cross country has already earned an invite to the big dance, with the entire boys’ team and sophomore Noelle Western slated to compete Saturday in Pasco in the 1B/2B state championships.

And finally, we may have more football. Emphasis on may.

Coupeville missed out on a trip to the playoffs but could pick up a week #10 game against another school without a postseason date.

Watch this blog (with bated breath) to see what develops in the next few days.
