From the slowest week of the season to the busiest.

Snow, ice, and school closings limited Coupeville High School basketball teams to just a single game last week, but the days ahead should be much busier.

As they scramble to make up games, the Wolf varsity squads will get plenty of floor time.

On the girls side of the ball, CHS travels three times this coming week, playing at Granite Falls Monday, at Cedar Park Christian Friday, and at Port Townsend Saturday.

The Wolf boys have an even-busier schedule, with four tilts, two at home, and two on the road.

Monday, Coupeville is home to face Cedar Park, before travelling to Shoreline Tuesday to face King’s, then on to Bothell Friday for a quick rematch with CPC.

A busy week reaches its conclusion Saturday, with Port Townsend headed to Whidbey.

As we wait for tipoff, an up-to-the-moment look at where things sit, through games played January 18:

North Sound Conference girls basketball:

School League Overall
King’s 3-0 12-2
CPC-Bothell 5-1 11-5
Coupeville 3-1 8-3
South Whidbey 2-4 7-9

Granite Falls 0-4 3-12

Now, we’re in the thick of it.

With winter break firmly in the rear view mirror — though maybe not winter itself — the basketball race is heating up.

Both Coupeville High School varsity hoops squads currently sit in third place in the six-team North Sound Conference, with plenty of games left to play.

The week ahead offers both Wolf squads a pair of games, weather permitting.

The CHS girls are scheduled to travel to Granite Falls Tuesday, then take a shorter trip down Island Friday to face next door neighbor South Whidbey.

Meanwhile the Coupeville boys get to spend the entire week on The Rock, with Cedar Park Christian set to come to town Tuesday, followed by a Friday trip to Langley with the girls.

As we prep for those games, and the possibility Mother Nature might once again mess around with the plans of basketball fans, a look at where things currently sit:

North Sound Conference girls basketball:

School League Overall
CPC-Bothell 4-0 10-4
King’s 1-0 9-2
Coupeville 2-1 7-3
South Whidbey 2-2 7-7
Granite Falls 0-3 2-11
Sultan 0-3 3-7

North Sound Conference boys basketball:

School League Overall
King’s 3-0 7-7
South Whidbey 2-1 10-3
Coupeville 1-1 4-6
CPC-Bothell 2-2 7-6

They should be well-rested.

The Coupeville High School basketball teams return to action this coming week.

Finally.

What was supposed to be a 12-day gap between games instead stretched out to 16 when Friday’s non-conference tilts at Chimacum were erased by high winds which made the Port Townsend ferry run dicey.

That boat is out of the picture now, and the Wolves are set to kick off the 2020 portion of the 2019-2020 season Tuesday night.

The Coupeville girls are at home, playing Cedar Park Christian with sole possession of first-place in the North Sound Conference at stake, while the Wolf boys travel to Granite Falls.

Then both CHS programs play at home Friday, with Sultan the foe.

As we (finally) move back into hardwood action, a look at the current league standings:

North Sound Conference girls basketball:

School League Overall
CPC-Bothell 2-0 8-4
Coupeville 1-0 6-2
King’s 0-0 7-2
South Whidbey 1-1 5-6
Granite Falls 0-1 2-8
Sultan 0-2 3-6

North Sound Conference boys basketball:

School League Overall
King’s 1-0 5-7
South Whidbey 1-0 8-2
Coupeville 0-0 3-5
CPC-Bothell 1-1 5-5
Granite Falls 1-1 3-6
Sultan 0-2 1-8

There were basketball games this week, just none involving Coupeville.

The Wolves are on Day 8 of a 12-day break between contests, not returning to action until Friday, January 3, when they travel to Chimacum.

But other North Sound Conference teams did lace up the shoes and head to the hardwood, so we’re back to provide a look at where everyone’s win/loss record sits.

Have to fill the time somehow, so here’s where things sit:

North Sound Conference girls basketball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 6-2
CPC-Bothell 1-0 6-3
Granite Falls 0-0 2-6
King’s 0-0 6-2
South Whidbey 0-1 2-6
Sultan 0-1 3-5

North Sound Conference boys basketball:

School League Overall
Granite Falls 1-0 3-5
King’s 1-0 4-6
Coupeville 0-0 3-5
South Whidbey 0-0 7-1
CPC-Bothell 0-1 3-4
Sultan 0-1 1-6

And now, some rest.

Having reached the sort-of halfway point of the season, give or take a game or three here and there, the North Sound Conference basketball teams are headed out for winter break.

Coupeville has 12 days off, with neither its girls or boys teams returning to action until Jan. 3.

Not all teams are taking the break off, but those who aren’t will be playing exclusively non-conference foes.

The King’s boys will play in a tourney in Arizona, both Granite Falls squads are set for Crush in the Slush in Port Townsend, and there are a handful of other games spread out around Christmas and New Year’s Day festivities.

Then, January rolls around and things get serious, as everyone starts to hunt league titles and playoff positioning.

For now, there have been just two league games played on either side of the ball, with the Coupeville girls one of those tied atop the current conference standings.

As we head into the break, where things sit:

North Sound Conference girls basketball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 6-2
CPC-Bothell 1-0 5-3
Granite Falls 0-0 2-4
King’s 0-0 4-2
South Whidbey 0-1 2-5
Sultan 0-1 3-5

North Sound Conference boys basketball:

School League Overall
Granite Falls 1-0 1-5
King’s 1-0 4-3
Coupeville 0-0 3-5
South Whidbey 0-0 6-1
CPC-Bothell 0-1 3-4
Sultan 0-1 1-6
