It’s a war so far.

With fall sports up and going — at least where Covid is not making teams sit right back down — the race for the most team varsity wins is a close one.

While Coupeville thoroughly dominated the spring sports which kept win/loss records, fall is a three-way battle.

The Wolves, who have at least one league victory in four sports — boys and girls soccer, football, and volleyball — are tied with La Conner with six wins total, while Mount Vernon Christian has five.

Orcas Island offers up three wins, all in boys soccer, while Concrete has one, and Darrington remains winless thus far.

Friday Harbor is actually winless as well, but, with all its fall programs shut down by a rise in positive Covid cases on San Juan Island, they’re not really a factor.

The week ahead offers a mix of games for Coupeville, with one constant — they’re all on the road.

Girls soccer is the only Wolf program set to play more than once, with a road game Friday at La Conner, followed by a 3 vs 3 mini-tourney Saturday at Mount Vernon Christian.

Meanwhile, boys soccer travels to Grace Academy Wednesday, volleyball and cross country will be on Orcas Friday, and football meets Lummi Nation Saturday night.

That last one is a non-conference clash, rare this time around as almost all Age of Coronavirus games are being played against league foes.

25-3.

Coupeville High School made a dramatic statement in its return to the Northwest 2B/1B League, dominating play during the pandemic-shortened spring season.

The Wolves won titles in girls tennis and softball — with both teams finishing undefeated — while claiming second-place in the final baseball standings.

While CHS was piling up 25 wins, the other six league schools combined to claim just 27.

Friday Harbor, which did win the baseball title, was a distant second with 11 victories, followed by Darrington (8), Orcas Island (7), and Mount Vernon Christian (1).

Concrete, and perhaps surprisingly, traditional power La Conner, both came up empty this spring.

But don’t cry too hard for the Braves, as they launch the league’s most-dominant program as we head into this school year’s out-of-place fall sports season.

La Conner volleyball has won back-to-back state titles.

And while there won’t be any playoffs this season, that squad is still a heavy favorite to be the team of the “fall.”

With all the seasons super-compressed by the pandemic, football, volleyball, boys tennis, cross country, and soccer start play this coming week, even as the dust from spring sports settles.

First up for Coupeville is its own talented volleyball squad, which travels to Concrete Thursday, then hosts Friday Harbor on Saturday.

Girls soccer is on the road Friday, travelling to Friday Harbor, while Wolf football hosts La Conner a day later.

CHS tennis and cross country make their debuts the following week, while the Wolf boys soccer program is sitting out the season after it was unable to fill a complete roster.

Final spring sports league standings:

Northwest League baseball:

Coupeville 7-3 7-3
Darrington 3-2 3-2
Orcas Island 4-5 4-5

Things are working out quite nicely.

As area high schools return to action after a year off thanks to the ongoing pandemic, one has risen above the others this spring.

Coupeville, the newcomer to the Northwest 2B/1B League, has won conference crowns in softball and girls tennis, and still has an outside shot at making it three-for-three with a baseball title.

Overall, looking at the three spring sports in which win/loss records are recorded (track is its own unique thing), CHS is 19-2, with almost as many wins as the other six schools combined.

Friday Harbor, which currently holds the top spot in baseball, sits second with 11 victories, with Darrington (6), Orcas Island (4), and Mount Vernon Christian (1) trailing.

Concrete, and somewhat surprisingly, traditional league power La Conner, have yet to win a spring contest.

Things come to a close this coming week, followed by the transition to traditional fall sports.

Coupeville tennis finishes first, playing at Friday Harbor Monday, while track has two meets – one Wednesday at La Conner, before the League Championship meet Saturday on Whidbey.

Softball is scheduled to travel to Friday Harbor on Friday, then La Conner Saturday, while CHS baseball gets four games in the final five days of the season.

The Wolf diamond men host Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, celebrating Senior Night, before joining softball on its road trips.

If Coupeville baseball bounces MVC, then sweeps a doubleheader from Friday Harbor — the only team it’s lost to this season — the Wolves would move into a tie with the Wolverines heading into their respective season finales.

Overcoming a 2.5 game deficit in the final week won’t be easy, but stranger things have happened.

Where we are through March 28:

Still the frontrunners.

When you tally up the three spring sports which keep win/loss records, one school in the Northwest 2B/1B League remains far out in front.

That would be Coupeville, which has as many wins (11) as the next two schools combined.

The Wolves have undefeated, first-place softball and girls tennis teams, while baseball is solidly in second-place.

That puts CHS ahead of Friday Harbor, which has six wins and holds first-place in baseball, and Darrington, with five wins.

Mount Vernon Christian (2) and Orcas Island (1) are on the board, while Concrete and La Conner are still searching for that elusive first win of spring.

The week ahead offers a bevy of games for Coupeville teams, though nothing is certain in the Age of Coronavirus.

Wolf softball is set to travel to Orcas Tuesday for a doubleheader, before a side trip to Concrete Friday and a home game against Darrington Saturday.

That last game is Senior Night for the CHS sluggers.

Meanwhile, baseball also gets a doubleheader at Orcas Tuesday, then is off for a week.

Wolf tennis plays matches four and five in its six-match death rumble with Friday Harbor, the only other NWL school to favor the net game.

Monday, the match is in Friday Harbor, while Friday the Wolf net crew is at home for its Senior Night festivities.

Rounding out the schedule is CHS track and field, which travels Thursday to Mount Vernon for a league meet.

Where things stand through March 21:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
Friday Harbor 4-0 4-0
Coupeville 3-2 3-2
Darrington 1-1 1-1
Orcas Island 1-1 1-1
MV Christian 2-3 2-3
La Conner 0-4 0-4

Northwest League girls tennis:

School League Overall

Friday Harbor 0-3 0-3

Northwest League softball:

Coupeville 5-0 5-0
Darrington 4-1 4-1
Friday Harbor 2-3 2-3
Orcas Island 0-1 0-1
La Conner 0-2 0-2
Concrete 0-4 0-4

Don’t look now, but the playoffs are around the corner. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

We’re down to the final days.

Both Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams have just one regular-season game left on the schedule, then it’s on to the playoffs.

Win or lose Tuesday, when they host South Whidbey on Senior Night, the Wolf girls are locked in as the #3 seed from the North Sound Conference.

Things are a little more up in the air for the CHS boys, who travel to Sultan Tuesday for their finale.

Win, and they go into the postseason as a #4 seed, and get automatic entry into the double-elimination portion of the district playoffs.

Lose to the Turks, and Coupeville’s boys will carry a #5 seed and host a loser-out play-in game against Mount Baker.

As we head towards those regular-season finales, a quick look at where things stand:

North Sound Conference girls basketball:

School League Overall
King’s 5-0 14-5
CPC-Bothell 8-1 15-5
Coupeville 5-3 11-5
South Whidbey 3-5 9-10
Sultan 2-6 6-13
