Scramble for hardwood supremacy heats up

Halfway home, and the battle rages on.

Both Coupeville High School varsity basketball teams sit at 3-3 with six games left to play, though the odds of a conference title for the Wolves greatly varies.

The CHS boys, who could be 5-1 if two plays go differently, are two games back of first-place, and have a legitimate shot of shaking the standings up in the second half.

The Wolves have already handed Mount Vernon Christian its only loss, and the Hurricanes gave Orcas Island its lone defeat.

The Vikings may sit atop the standings at the moment, but nothing seems safe as the hunt for a boys title continues.

On the girls side, however, it’s a two-team race to hang a banner, and no one else is getting into the mix.

Coupeville is a game out of third, but there is no realistic way its gets a top-two finish.

La Conner and MVC are both 5-0 in league play, 6-0 overall heading into a Tuesday clash, and have decimated the other Northwest 2B/1B League schools.

Counting their non-conference tilts (the Braves beat Kings, the Hurricanes KO’d Lummi Nation), La Conner has outscored its foes 438-106, while MVC is at 386-96.

The Wolf girls have a tough week ahead, as they face La Conner and MVC back-to-back, playing the former on the road Wednesday, before hosting the latter Thursday.

A road trip to Orcas Saturday to square off with the team they’re chasing for third-place caps a busy schedule.

The CHS boys play the same trio, at the same locations, with a chance to make some waves.

The La Conner rumble is a rematch, after they lost 59-57 on a last-second bucket at home this past Thursday, then the Wolves go toe-to-toe with the current top two in the standings.

“So do we.”

One week in, three to play.

High school hoops are officially underway in the Northwest 2B/1B League, and a couple of things are already clear.

On the girls side, La Conner is, as always, a beast.

The 2B Braves have polished off Concrete 88-10, Friday Harbor 62-15, and Darrington 87-6, while also stepping outside the NWL to beat 1A power King’s 44-39.

There’s also a second beast, with 1B Mount Vernon Christian having beaten Coupeville 54-14, Concrete 75-17, and Orcas Island 62-16.

La Conner and MVC play June 1 and 15, and barring any kind of Covid-related shenanigans, it would appear the Braves and Hurricanes will slug it out for the title.

On the boys side, things are much more topsy-turvy.

Orcas Island sits atop the standings at 3-1, but lost Saturday to Mount Vernon Christian, a team Coupeville already whacked.

For the Wolves, if their buzzer-beater Saturday at Friday Harbor had stayed in the bucket, they’d be 2-1 and in a second-place tie.

It didn’t, so, for the moment, CHS is a game-and-a-half back of the top spot, though things could radically change in week two.

The Wolves, both boys and girls, play three times this coming week, with home games against Concrete Tuesday and La Conner Thursday, followed by a trip Friday to the wilds of Darrington.

That’ll take us to the halfway point of this pandemic-altered 12-game season, and may provide a bit more clarity on which boys team will rise to the top.

Maybe.

Still large and in charge

The fall belongs to La Conner, the school year to Coupeville.

We’ve made it through two of three seasons during this pandemic-fractured campaign, with winter sports set to kick off Monday and finish in mid-June.

Fall sports, which were played second and not first as normal, featured a very-competitive four-way battle for supremacy, with La Conner coming out with 17 varsity wins across volleyball, football, boys soccer, and girls soccer.

Cross country doesn’t have won/loss records, and boys tennis was cancelled after Friday Harbor chose not to play any sports this season.

The 17 wins was a big bounce back for the always-tough Braves, who won exactly zero games during spring sports.

But fall is La Conner’s sweet spot, thanks to a two-time defending state champ volleyball team which went 10-0 this time around, sweeping all 30 sets it played.

Mount Vernon Christian, paced by its title-winning girls soccer squad, was second with 15 fall varsity wins, followed by Orcas Island (13, with 10 from boys soccer), and Coupeville, which collected 12.

Concrete and Darrington were far back, with just two wins apiece, while Friday Harbor took the zero, cause you can’t win if you don’t play.

When we add fall and spring together, the Wolves, who went 25-3 in the spring while playing softball, baseball, and girls tennis, go back out in front, and by a lot.

With just basketball left to play — we don’t count wrestling, because CHS doesn’t wrestle, and this blog isn’t called, say, Darrington Sports — here’s the school year to date varsity win totals:

Get your hot ‘n toasty standings

One week left on the schedule, but how many games will actually be played?

All we know for certain is that this pandemic-shortened fall sports season ends next Saturday, May 8.

After that, whomever is left standing is off to play basketball as the 2020-2021 school year winds towards its finish.

If the schedule holds — and that’s been extra-tricky of late during the Age of Coronavirus — Coupeville High School teams have 10 events in the final six days.

Wolf cross country hosts the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships Thursday at Fort Casey State Park.

Then, you have CHS football at home Saturday for Senior Night against Concrete.

Both Coupeville soccer teams have two games remaining, with the girls traveling to La Conner Monday, then hosting Mount Vernon Christian Friday.

The Wolf male booters host league leader Orcas Island Monday, before finishing on the road Wednesday at La Conner.

And then there’s volleyball, which hopes to play four matches in the final five days.

Tuesday, the Wolf spikers travel to MVC, they’re home Wednesday against Darrington, back on the road Friday to La Conner, before closing Saturday at home against Orcas in a game with no fans.

Maybe…

When you look at the NWL standings, it’s easy to see how the pandemic has messed with schedules, as mid-season quarantines for several programs have left teams with radically-different number of games played.

But on we plow.

Fight for fall supremacy rages

It’s a donnybrook.

As we continue to stumble through a pandemic-altered fall sports season — which is running after spring this time around — pretty much everyone in the Northwest 2B/1B League is having success.

Well, except for Friday Harbor, which is sitting out the season…

But, other than the quarantine-lovin’ Wolverines, the battle for the most varsity team wins is a hotly-contested affair.

Coupeville, which rolled to a blowout victory during spring sports, still leads the pack, with eight wins spread out among its volleyball, girls and boys soccer, and football teams.

But, La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian are on the rise, with seven W’s apiece, while Orcas Island has six.

Concrete and Darrington are finding less success, with each school nabbing just a single win across the four fall sports to post win/loss records.

Cross country doesn’t roll that way, and Friday Harbor’s exit means Coupeville hasn’t been able to pick up any boys tennis victories.

The week ahead offers up a mix of contests — if the schedule plays out as planned, which has been highly-questionable in recent days.

Coupeville boys soccer is set to travel to Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, then host NWL interloper Providence Classical Christian Thursday.

Meanwhile, Wolf girls soccer goes to MVC Wednesday, while cross country makes the same trip Friday afternoon.

Rounding out the schedule, next Saturday offers up a road game, with football playing Neah Bay in Forks, and a home affair — Senior Night for volleyball against Concrete.
