The Wolves had a good weekend.

Back from a two-week break, the Coupeville High School track and field squad lit up the Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham Saturday, and it has paid off big time.

As we scan the best times and distances statewide, there are 12 CHS athletes who currently land in the top 10 rankings for 2B schools, with nearly half of those top-level performances having been thrown down two days ago.

There’s still plenty of time, and competition, left in the season, starting with a home meet this Wednesday at Mickey Clark Field for the Wolves.

But here’s where we sit through April 14:

The second half run begins.

Returning from a spring break layoff, the Coupeville High School track and field squad jumped right into the deep end Saturday, competing at the 31-team Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham.

Despite repping one of the smallest student bodies in the field, the Wolves held their own against their big school rivals.

Coupeville’s girls finished 17th in the team standings, with their male counterparts claiming 18th on their side of the leaderboard.

Shorecrest (girls) and Shorewood (boys), both 3A schools, finished atop the standings.

On an individual basis, Katie Marti and Matthew Ward had the best performances for the Wolves.

Marti finished 2nd in the shot put, out of 30 competitors, and 3rd (of 28) in the discus, while Ward was 4th (of 17) in the triple jump.

The Solberg meet, hosted by Sehome, featured several events the Wolves don’t normally see, such as a 4 x 800 relay and a steeplechase.

With the Wolves racking up 16 PRs Saturday against stellar competition, it’s a strong start to the latter part of the season.

“A bright and energetic day as we eased back into the groove after spring break,” said Wolf coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting.

“Plenty of sunshine, strong finishes, and everyone held their own.”

Coupeville has three meets left, two at their own stadium, before beginning postseason action at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Up first is a home meet Wednesday, April 16, followed by a trip to the Cashmere Invitational three days later.

Every race a new PR.

Or at least it might seem that way lately for Coupeville grad Tate Wyman, who has been ripping up the oval in the collegiate track and field world.

The former Wolf, now a sophomore at Oregon Tech, was back at work this weekend at the John Knight Twilight meet in Monmouth, Oregon.

Wyman competed in three events over two days, setting personal bests in both the 200, where he hit the tape in 22.93 seconds, and the 400 hurdles, where he clocked in at 1:01.19.

Joining his teammates, Ayden and Devon’s big bro also ran a leg on a 4 x 100 relay squad which finished in 43.43.

Tate and his associates are back in action next weekend, with the Hustlin’ Owls slated to host the Oregon Tech Invitational April 18-19.

If the lights are shining, so is Taygin Jump.

The Coupeville High School grad, now a sophomore at Plattsburgh State, was back in action Friday at the RPI Friday Night Under the Lights Invitational in Troy, New York.

The track and field star accounted for five of her team’s 46 points, claiming 5th in the javelin (out of a field of 22 competitors) and 8th (of 27) in the hammer throw.

Jump set a collegiate PR in the latter event, flinging her implement 127 feet, five inches, while launching the javelin a solid 95-09.

A stellar multi-sport athlete who participated in volleyball and track back in her CHS days, the former Wolf is majoring in Environmental Planning and Management/Geology.

Plattsburgh State athletes will be back in action next weekend with two meets.

The Bobbi Palma Spring Classic in Albany, New York goes down Friday, April 18, while the Middlebury Invitational is the next day in Vermont.

Their time on the sidelines is done.

With spring break having played out last week, Coupeville High School track and field athletes could do little more than bide their time with no new meets.

That allowed for other prep stars from across the state to slip past the Wolves in some places on the top 10 charts for 2B schools.

But now, class is back in session and Coupeville returns to competition at the Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham this coming Saturday.

For Wolves like Carson Field, who slipped from #1 to #4 in the 800 over the course of the past week, the chance to control their own fates is once more open.

Let the number-crunching begin anew!

For now, through April 7, here’s where CHS oval queens and kings sit among all 2B competitors:

GIRLS:

800 — Lyla Stuurmans (8th) 2:33.53

Shot Put — Katie Marti (7th) 32-08
