Wolf grad hustlin’ for the Owls

He’s still got that zing.

Coupeville grad Tate Wyman, now a sophomore at Oregon Tech, zipped around the track oval Saturday in McMinnville, Oregon.

Competing for the Hustlin’ Owls at the Jenn Boyman Invitational, the former Wolf set a PR in the 110 hurdles while also running legs on Oregon Tech’s 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay squads.

The 4 x 1 unit earned 5th place (out of nine teams) with a time of 43.47 seconds, while the 4 x 4 finished 5th in a field of 11 squads in 3:28.28.

Wyman also placed 10th, out of a field of 24 competitors, in the hurdles, hitting the tape in 15.99.

His previous collegiate PR was 16.07.

During his days at CHS, Wyman was a standout track and cross country runner, earning a 2nd place medal in the 4 x 100 at the state meet his senior season.

Oregon Tech returns to action April 11-12, when the track team travels to Monmouth, Oregon for the John Knight Twilight meet.

Jump flings her way to success

She’s off to a roaring start.

Coupeville grad Taygin Jump, now a sophomore at Plattsburgh State, opened the outdoor track and field season Friday by flinging her javelin into the wild blue yonder.

When the implement came crashing back down to Earth at the Hamilton Outdoor Invitational in Clinton, New York, the former Wolf had a PR of 103 feet, eight inches, good for 2nd place in a 14-woman field.

Jump joined teammates Marissa LeDuc (Long Jump) and Isabella Scott (400), as well as Plattsburgh’s 4 x 100 relay squad in claiming runner-up finishes in the opener.

When she’s not chucking things at track meets, or pursuing her well-documented love of rocks, Aleksia and Khanor’s older sibling is pursuing a degree in Environmental Planning & Management/Geology.

Plattsburgh track and field returns to action April 11 at the “RPI Friday Night Under the Lights” in Troy, New York.

Field, Wilson pacing CHS track stars

Another week in the books; another week of watching the numbers move up and down.

Every meet produces new results, as the statewide Top 10 performance list for 2B track and field athletes fluctuates.

As we sit here on Mar. 31, there are 12 Coupeville High School stars on that tally, with Cael Wilson appearing twice.

And, if state titles were given out in March instead of May, Wolf senior Carson Field would join an exclusive list, as he currently tops everyone in the 800.

But there’s still a long way to go, so check back next week, and the week after that, and so on.

Wyman wows ’em, again

Tate Wyman probably ate his Wheaties.

Fueled by something, the Coupeville grad had a stellar day Saturday while competing as a collegiate track and field athlete.

Wyman, now a sophomore at Oregon Tech, set two PRs, and narrowly missed a third, while vying at the Cal Poly Humboldt Invitational in Arcata, California.

The former Wolf ace claimed 4th place in the long jump, traveling 21 feet, eight inches through the air — nearly five inches better than his previous top performance.

He also finished 10th in the 100 in 11.31 seconds — almost a full second better than his previous PR — and hit the tape in 11th in the 200 in 23.03.

Wyman’s best mark in the last of those events is 22.94.

Ayden and Devon’s older brother was a standout track and cross country runner during his CHS days, helping the Wolves finish 2nd in the 4 x 100 at the state championships during his senior season.

Oregon Tech returns to action April 5 with an appearance at the Jenn Boyman Invitational in McMinnville, Oregon.

“The future is looking bright!”

Young guns, having some fun.

That’s not just lyrics from an extra-bouncy 1982 song by Wham, but also an apt description of Saturday’s track and field meet.

Coupeville High School sent its young bunch on the road for the Stanwood Freshman/Sophomore Showcase, returning with 26 PRs and a win in the 110 hurdles from Axel Marshall.

Competing against a packed field of bigger schools, the Wolves claimed seventh place in the freshman boys’ team standings and eighth among sophomores, while the CHS girls were ninth best in both competitions.

Lake Stevens (boys) and Stanwood (girls) finished atop the reader board for freshmen, with Arlington coming out on top in both sophomore battles.

Marshall narrowly missed a double dip, finishing 2nd in the 300 hurdles, while Wyatt Fitch-Marron was 2nd in the freshman high jump.

Toss in some third and fourth-place finishes, plus a lot of personal bests, and the young Wolves made their mark in the big time.

“Great showing by our freshman and sophomore athletes today, well done!” said CHS coach Bob Martin. “The future is looking bright!”

With Spring Break upon them, the Wolves, young or old, don’t have another meet for a bit.

Coupeville returns to action as a complete team Thursday, April 10, when it travels to Shoreline to join Archbishop Thomas Murphy, Shorecrest, and Shorewood for an afternoon of competition.
