CHS track stars kick off state meet run

Day one is in the books.

A pack of Coupeville High School athletes traveled from moderately sunny Whidbey Island to blazing-hot Yakima Thursday, with three Wolves competing in the opening moments of the 2B state track and field championships.

With temps pushing the mid-90’s on the Eastern side of the state, CHS freshman Tamsin Ward finished 14th in the shot put.

One of just three fab frosh to make the cut for the big dance in the event, she chucked her weapon of choice 30 feet, seven inches.

It’s the first of two competitions for Ward at state, as she will vie in the high jump Saturday as well.

Rounding out Coupeville’s day one competitors, freshman Cyrus Sparacio and senior George Spear ran in the 1600-meter race.

Sparacio claimed 11th in a personal-best time of four minutes, 38.14 seconds, with his older teammate earning 18th in 5:12.49.

With his run to the tape, the Wolf frosh shattered his PR by five-plus seconds and missed out on a medal by just four ticks.

One of the three youngest runners in the event (two freshmen and an 8th grader), Sparacio was the fastest of the trio.

Coupeville returns to action Friday at Zaepfel Stadium for day two of the three-day royal rumble.

The Wolves are slated to have Lillian Ketterling (Discus, Pole Vault), Zachary Saho (Shot Put), and the duo of Wyatt Fitch-Marron and Davin Houston (High Jump) in action.

The latter two will also link up with Liam Blas and Marquette Cunningham to run in the 4 x 100 prelims.

The Thursday trio return to action in the meet finale Saturday, with Ward in the high jump and Sparacio and Spear in the 3200.

If the 4 x 1 relay unit makes it to the finals, they’ll also run that day.

PRs sprout in the sun.

At least that appears to be the case, as the Coupeville Middle School track and field team stayed busy Wednesday piling up personal-best marks during a three-team meet in Langley.

Squaring off with host South Whidbey and Cascade League heavyweight King’s, the Wolves collected 54 PRs and 14 wins.

That made for a happy bunch of CMS coaches.

“They had a fun day in the sun,” said Wolf track guru Jon Gabelein. “Our athletes have worked hard throughout the season, and this allowed them to enjoy some clear and exciting growth.”

With Coupeville staying on Whidbey to visit its next-door neighbors, Wolf fans also made the trek in style.

“It was great seeing so many families make the trip South to support our athletes,” Gabelein said. “This was very appreciated!”

Talent runs deep on the Wolf roster.

Coupeville’s 14 wins were spread amongst eight athletes, led by three-event winner Les Queen, who topped the field in the 200, shot put, and discus.

That gives the CMS 7th grader 14 wins this spring, the most in a single season by a Wolf boy in the athletic.net era (2008-2026).

Queen, who won three times as a 6th grader, edges past Diesel Eck (13 in 2025) and Alex Murdy (12 in 2019), and trails just Lindsey Roberts (18 in 2015) and Tamsin Ward (16 in 2025) on the all-time list.

He was joined by double event winners Henry Purdue (800, 1600), Laurel Crowder (100, 200), Jesse Kehoe (High Jump, Long Jump), and Malachi Chapa (400, Long Jump), with Bella Sandlin (400), Xander Beaman (High Jump), and Ella Holm (Shot Put) also claiming titles.

With his performance Wednesday Kehoe joins an exclusive club, as he now has 10 wins during his 7th grade campaign.

Crowder (9), Chapa (8), and Purdue (7) are all hot on his heels, while Holm became the 32nd Wolf to win an event this season.

The Wolves have one more meet, split into two parts, to add to their win totals, with the Cascade League Championships set to wrap the season.

Coupeville heads to Lakewood High School in Arlington June 1 for the prelims, then returns June 4 for the finals.

One team, one dream.

Three more Wolves tapped for state trip

Make room for some more Wolves on the bus.

Coupeville High School qualified nine track and field athletes for the 2B state meet, but they’ll actually be taking more.

That’s because the CHS boys 4 x 100 relay unit, comprised of Marquette Cunningham, Liam Blas, Wyatt Fitch-Marron, and Davin Houston is on its way to Yakima for the year-end rumble.

Wolf coaches are allowed to take a pack of alternates to back up the main four runners, and Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting officially tapped that group Monday.

Sophomores Edmund Wilson, Richmond Bandong, and Beckett Green get the call, pushing the Cow Town state contingent to an even dozen.

Wolf thrower lives to fling

He keeps on chucking.

A day after competing with his Coupeville teammates at the District 1 track and field championships, Wolf sophomore Khanor Jump hit the road Sunday, vying at Hammer Meet Series 8 at the Evergreen State College in Olympia.

While there, the CHS ace finished 7th, unleashing a throw of 114 feet, four inches.

That’s his third-best distance in the event all time.

Since the hammer throw is not part of most high school meets in Washington state, the Olympia-based series offers throwers a chance to compete on a regular basis, culminating in a championship event separate from the one run by the WIAA.

Khanor, following in the footsteps of big sis Taygin, now a collegiate thrower at Plattsburgh State in New York, finished 22nd at the state hammer championships as a freshman.

He’s been busy at CHS as well, competing in the discus, shot put, and javelin this spring, earning top 10 finishes in all three events at the district meet.

CHS track sends nine to state

The spring bonanza continues.

Hot on the heels of the Coupeville High School softball team and three girls’ tennis players qualifying for state, the Wolf track and field team had nine athletes punch their tickets to the big dance.

Needing a top two finish at Saturday’s District 1 Championships to advance, two freshmen, three sophomores, a junior, and three seniors hit their marks while defending their home turf in Cow Town.

Fab frosh Tamsin Ward (Shot Put, High Jump) and Cyrus Sparacio (1600, 3200) each captured two district titles, while sophomore Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump) also finished atop the medal stand.

Sophomore Lillian Ketterling (Pole Vault, Discus), junior Davin Houston (High Jump), and seniors George Spear (1600, 3200) and Zachary Saho (Shot Put) all finished second in their events, as did the boys 4 x 100 relay unit.

That foursome was comprised of Fitch-Marron, Houston, sophomore Liam Blas, and senior Marquette Cunningham.

Now, the nine (plus some soon-to-be-named alternates for the 4 x 100) head to Eisenhower High School in Yakima May 28-30 for the 2B state meet, where they’ll give chase to snagging some medals.

Three of the Wolves — Cunningham, Houston, and Fitch-Marron — already have one in the bank from last year.

Cunningham and Houston combined with Preston Epp and Chase Anderson to take 6th in the 4 x 100 in 2025, while Fitch-Marron earned 7th in the high jump a season ago.

Sparked by their seven state qualifiers, the Wolf boys finished in a tie with Mount Vernon Christian Saturday for the team title, with both squads totaling 129 points.

While many in the stands would have liked to have seen CHS and MVC go for a tiebreaker (maybe a pushup contest for point #130?), the stalemate goes into the history books as is.

La Conner (98), Orcas Island (87), and Friday Harbor (79) rounded out the boy’s battle.

On the girls’ side of things, a deep MVC team was in control, holding off La Conner 193-149 to claim top honors.

Friday Harbor (91), Coupeville (73), Orcas Island (26), and Summit Atlas (2) were also in contention.
